It seems Al's beats aren't as hard and grimy since he switched from the ASR-10 (which he using here) to the MPC 2500. Same thing when Pete Rock switched to the MPC 2000 from the SP1200 and RZA switched from the ASR-10/SP1200 to the Roland MV8000. Playing pads don't have the same feel as stroking those ivories. I think Al said it was always needing to be repaired and it's hard to find parts, since they been out of production since the mid 90's. Kanye West got so much doe, he owns several.
