In some box's and at some competitions, 80% of the swings would of been "no repped" for not getting full extension at the top ... This is still unreal though, amazing work!!!
GREAT WORK, now is it just my gym that makes KB swings to wear the KB is vertical and ears are showing? Not taking anything from him, he is an animal but I just was wondering about the KB swings because it makes a difference.
i like crossfit i just dont like opt hes just a cocky trainer i think its funny how in every second counts how awesome he thinks he is but really mikko salo jason and a whole lot of other kick his ass without trying im sure hes fit but worst attitude ever and not as fit as he thinks or wishes
Don't kid yourselves, those are not pull ups... he is cheating! Kicks himself up all the time and uses the momentum to get closer to the bar... that is just plain cheat, sorry! Try not to move your knee forward, and measure the time again! But nice effort, keep up the good work!
@aarnsafag You can name it as you like. :) It is like a womens push-up, when your knee is on the floor. It's just not the same, and much easier. But if it accepted in this sport, than I guess it's ok. But if I had to make the rules I only allowed it to women, and man had to do the regular ones. :)
@AxelLNo1 you should learn that he is doing the workout to get the fastest time. thus he saves time and energy by kipping his legs. if he did strict pullups then his time would be much higher. its about intensity and if he was only doing pullups then yes they wouldn't be very effective but hes running and doing kb swings so its designed for cardiovascular stress not just strength training.
@AxelLNo1 Hey your completely wrong by the way. The range of motion in a kipping pull up is exactly the same as a strict. Work = force x distance. Doesn't matter how you get there because your using the same amount of work. Dumbass. Get educated before you try and prove a point.
@dillanmonson No, its not the same. Basic Physics just for you "dumbass": If you lift your leg before you start pulling yourself up, your "weight center" moves up, then he uses this elevated feet to kick himself up from that position and make the actual pulling easier. According to your opinion no matter how much muscle group does the job. So If the "work" is the same the distance is the same, you can do it with one arm. Good luck with that! :)
@AxelLNo1 basic physics for you dumbass. there's no such thing as "weight center." It's his "center of mass." and his center of mass moves the same distance as a strict pull up. the distance his center of mass moves upwards from him lifting his knees is the same as the distance of his center of mass at the top of his kipping pull up over his center of mass of a strict pull up.
@hampsted42 First of all English is not my native tongue, so if it's called center of mass, then so be it.. Second: You are a dumbass, if you believe that bs you just wrote.. That is simply not true. "Kipping pull ups" are easier because they use more muscle groups to do the same work.. not so isolated as a normal pull ups.
@AxelLNo1 did you read my comment? at no point did i say kipping pull ups were any where near as hard as strict pull ups. they're way easier. i refuted your claim that you're doing less work because of the change in COM. also, if you knew anything about physics, you'd know it was called center of mass; weight is completely based on gravity. the thing about kipping pull ups is that they keep up the intensity of the workout, rather than just blowing out your arms and back.
@hampsted42 Indeed, the instensity is important. If the intensity is not high enough, the Crossfit aspect is gone. The most, best effect you get with intensity.
I can do Butterfly-pull-ups. Not good enough to use it in workouts. But it will rate the intensity.
Anyone looking for this song: it's called "The Way Simple Men Are" and was produced by ToToM. 2 of my Crossfit pals got married, and their first dance was to this song...it was really awesome :)
Swings and pullups look pretty easy to do in 3-3:30 minutes, but running 3 400m in 3-3:30 is just insane while working in the other stuff. Then again, last timed I timed any 400m-1 mile run was back in middle school, where I know I just started getting involved in sports. Height and intensity have increased dramatically. But still doing all that in 7 minutes is pretty insane, even for a light weight person.
@bluejay52431 Even for CrossFit haters (believe me there are things I really hate about the organization and some programming) you have to admit this is impressive. Say you run a 70s 400M (hardly impressive, but for an average guy), that's 3.5minutes for the 400's (and remember, no rest, so maintaining 70s on each) so doing the other stuff in 3.5 minutes all in a row, yeah it would be fucking hard.
i did it in 8:34 but it was my 2nd day doing crossfit although i am very athletic. When i learn to do the kip pullups and get a bit more in shape i think i can do it under 8 minutes!
I have to admit that yes, Crossfit is a cult... I'm an adamant crossfitter with lots of collegiate football and track experience. The workouts are more grueling. A track athlete who runs the 60 is stronger than a crossfitter and a track athlete who runs a 5k has more endurance than a crossfitter. But in an overall aspect, a crossfitter is a better athlete even if he does get crushed by a track athlete in both of those events. It's about hollistic; not specific. But much more fun :) IMO
After reading through some comments I'll add in my two cents.
I am a dedicated crossfitter, but have a 400m running background with a best of 48 seconds and change. OPT crushed this workout. Running 400m reps and running the 400's in this workout are very different. I'm working on hitting 7:30 for this one. CrossFit workouts are deceiving, until you've done them you have no idea. The mind looks at each round individually and it just doesn't work that way. These are as much mental as physical.
@facetha Agreed. Very much agreed. Although, I did dread running 60 second 400m repeats on 2 min rest. The day after my last comment I hit this one in 7:32! Working my way down!
After being a gym rat for years, Crossfit is the single best thing I've ever found. Good for the mind, body and (because of all the TREMENDOUS people) soul.
you're a closed minded track bunny fag. OPT is strong as hell and probably faster than you on a track too. you try posting a sub-7 HELEN and then go deadlift 450+#s or a sub 2:30 fran... go for it buddy then tell me track stars are fit and i still won't believe you.
What I find confusing is his superb form on the swings and this terrible form on the pullups (if you even want to call them that). It is only 36 pull-ups in all. Not that many. Why cheat yourself and do them sloppy just for your 5 minutes of fame on youtube?
People have to understand the nature of crossfit. It's intentionally meant to not be sport specific. To always engage in muscle confusion. To not become catabolic. It is meant to cross-train, and has been adopted by the military, police, firefighters and general fitness enthusiast all around. People will hate, but hell their lonely and angry by nature. Believe me, when you work crossfit, and break you best bench mark WOD time. It's like winning a gold in the olympics.
dude some skinny track star most likely would barely even be able to swing a 1.5 pood KB or do pullups! that's why it would still take you and your track star buddies 15 minutes to finish Helen. lol. oh and I take back wat I said abt everrett. Jason khalipa is the man :-D I think deejay's rit. you're just talking out ur ass.
this man is an animal. im just getting into crossfit and i seriously look up to OPT. Some of the other greats are Speal, Pat Barber, Dutch Lowy, Josh Everett (08 Games 2nd place, 07 games 3rd place) and last year's winner Jason Khalipa.
Yeah, Everett is just a machine, and Speal is a freak of nature--watch out for him this year, I think he may take it. Dutch is great, but if they go heavy in any of the WOD's I think he's out.
I am kind of pulling for Everett this year. I heard there will be events this year that will be different than anything anyone has seen from crossfit. In that case you may be right Speal is just an all around freak. He can do it all. I swear him training at higher altitude helps him a little too.
@alig53 Mikko Salo, has my vote.. his performance was amazing in 2009, then top it off with what he does on a daily basis (The Sisu Documentary, if you haven't watched it)
I don't have the time or desire to search through the comments to see if you had the capacity to correct your own mistakes. Just take my comment for what it's worth and that is correcting a mistake that I saw. Was it rude? Yes. Grow a pair and deal with it.
Having done Helen many a time, I can attest to what an athletic feat this guy pulled off here. I have seen many a top athlete in various disciplines attempt Crossfit workouts thinking they can obliterate certain times. Inevitably, after their first workout, they are apologizing to me for being so slow and not understanding how they could not be faster. Running 800m at a time and performing Helen in a respectable time are two COMPLETELY different animals.
Of course 72sec is not an elite 400M time (nor is it OPT's fastest), he is pacing so he can do the rest of the work without stopping. I would be surprised if pure track athletes could beat 7min in this workout. Remember it's a ~72 pounds kettlebell (full swing overhead). Also the runs require a turnaround (at least in this instance) versus a track. Seriously this is very impressive, although I would like to see an elite 400/800 athlete try it.
you're way wrong... after the kettlebell swings fry your poterier and the pullups suck all the energy (blood) away from your legs and ass the run times will slow with the progression towards the end of the WOD regardless! NO MATTER HOW WONDERFUL A RUNNER YOU ARE!
mom must be so proud, I don't care how much you weigh or how much body fat you have. I asked if you have done Helen. If not then you have no Idea what it does to your running capabilities. OPT jogged the first 400m in 72 secs. If you know so many elite runners who can do better then video tape it and post it. If not, I'm done wasting my time with you.
My only gripe with crossfit is how much Kool Aid these people drink. I truly beleive they would eat baby shit if that coach guy told them too....well atleast a few of them would.
Truth of the matter is crossfit is great for GPP but most people I do it with arent nearly as strong as me or cut. A big reason guys like this are fast as fuck is becuase they weigh little to nothing. I actually had a crossfitter say the ideal weight for a male athlet eis 140 pounds....I shit you not!!!!
You are hanging around with the wrong crossfitters. Any crossfitter who knows what he/she is talking about will tell you that you need to be strong AND fast. I don't see how being cut is relevent. I've seen some amazing Crossfit athletes who are not cut at all. (Jason Khalipa for one.)
It is rare that little guys can go big weight or big guys can be fast. In my opinion the most impressive Crossfitter is Josh Everett at 185 lbs.
granted. there are some out there who pretend to be crossfitters and say really stupid shit they probably learned at gym jones but unless you're going for GOLD in the olympics or making a million dollars as a pro athlete then GPP is all that matters.
especially elite GPP if i can put those two words together :D oh, and no, 140# would not be the ideal weight. there is no ideal weight. it's the ability to do tremendous amounts of work with what you got. but it does make good sense for your goal to be maximum strength with minimul weight gain...
@curtmastor being cut and strong is nice for body building competition or vanity, but honestly looking like you are in great shape and being in great shape are different. If you look great then you should perform great, if not, then what's the point of working out other than to look good in a bar? You are probably just more experienced at lifting and working out overall than the people you are doing crossfit with, hence why you aren't impressed. 140....haha...wtf?
@curtmastor umm arguably the fittest human being alive weighs 140 lbs his name is Chris Spealler and he weighs 140, clean and jerks 255, dead lifts 400 and is fast as fuck. weight doesn't matter. strength to weight ratio matters in CrossFit not being cut. oh and he placed 3rd in the 2010 crossfit games over crossfitters almost twice his weight. i shit you not!!!! he is extremely strong and only weighs 140.
Exactly what I tell my athletes everytime we do a KB workout. Dropping the KB from overhead is not going to make you faster! KB's are not cheap and the handles break!
@DECman - song is a mashup by ToToM. Search TotoM, "Simple Man" and mashup in google and you should find it on his site. It's an awesome song and really makes this a standout crossfit vid (IMHO).
In some box's and at some competitions, 80% of the swings would of been "no repped" for not getting full extension at the top ... This is still unreal though, amazing work!!!

In addition to an amazing showing by the mighty OPT, I have to say that this is the best pairing of video and music of any CF video I've seen.
