From 1981 to 1989, there was a US administration who ran an extremely brutal foreign policy in places like Libya, Nicaragua, South Africa, Grenada, and elsewhere...military spending as % of GDP was higher than it's ever been...debt to GDP grew significantly. This administration was extremely protectionist, especially for the auto industry...and finally, income and capital gain taxes were far higher than the present day.
