Just a little comment on how much I love watching/listening to the "out of this world" music. Thank you "operalover" for posting this;please keep this one forever! And, YOU TUBE people...I pray you never, ever stop this...I love it and apprieciate it so much, words are not enough. Always remember that there are some of us who just don't get out as much any more, and YOU TUBE makes our days...at least it does mine! Thank you so very much. Maybe someday I'll learn how to upload some I have.
MIss Thebom was pretty much a staple at the Met during those years. I remember listening to Saturday at THE MET programs, and wondering just what Miss Thebom looked like. She is TREMENDOUS! I LOVE her smiling all the way through rather than some who look as though they're in PAIN! Wonder whether it's true she never had her hair cut, and could have it fixed any way to match the role. Thanks so much for posting this...wonderful , marvelous singers of the past!
Great performance of this. I like the way they walk right up plant their feet and just belt it out. I also prefer the older finish they used over what newer singers are doing nowdays.
Best I have heard so far~~Peters gave a concert In Dayton in the 40's. During one of her arias she was dive bombed by a bat. Guess what her encore was~~~~~?
Cesare Valletti, my favorite ever Nemorino, Ernesto, and Alfredo; all the others here are great too and they all know how to take a proper operatic breath, something that has vanished from the opera stage today. The lungs go to the TOP of the shoulders.
Very nice job. Valletti made lots of recordings, but his voice did not record well. On stage he had a golden tenor like Corelli or Tucker, just not so big.
Peters had a lovely but tiny voice. She could only be heard when singing above the staff.
Thebom looked and sounded great. Don't know why she made so few recordings.
Siepi was a big star and still sounded great when I heard him in Don Carlo. He was in his 60s.
Roberta's voice could be heard perfectly well all throughout her performances. I saw her glorious debut as "Zerlina" at the old Met and did very well vocally with the excellent Don of Paul Schoeffler's powerful instrumet, as well as in all the ensembles of the great opera, Don Giovanni. JRT
too bad that someone apparently thought that opera was synonymous with fff singing. Why fortissimo all the way through?? Pity. a dream team of singers forced to sing full out on every single note, every single phrase......
Most basses soon learn that if they want to get gigs they have to do the baritone parts in ensembles with tenors. I did this quartet once too. Its not that high. It only has a very brief F. Other than that one note it doesn't go above an E Flat.
The other part that tenors expect basses to know is the baritone line in the duet "Solenne in Quest Ora".
Yep. It's confusing..but think of the composer for a minute. Many opera singers got the title of primma donnas not for their offstage behavior; but, for their demands to showcase their vocal skills over the composer's intent of the music that they had written.
This quartet; to be performed well, takes a discipline of the singers to conform to the score...AND .. listening skills to hear the other singers . This recording is a top notch example of those skills!

A wonderful quartet. Blanche Thebom was under-recorded. It didn't help that she recorded the same two operas more than once.
Cesare Valletti made a lot of recordings, but his voice sounds dry and raspy. In the theatre, however, his voice was a golden tenor that sounded better than many more celebrated tenors like di Stefano.
Peters had a pleasant, but tiny voice. In the theatre she couldn't be heard unless she was singing above the staff.
Grandissima Peters! Spettacolare questo video con Siepi nella rara veste di baritono (sempre eccellente), e un Valletti inedito, diverso da quello conosciuto tramite le registrazioni Cetra. Buona scoperta anche il mezzosoprano Thebom.
Interesting group of famous singers. Not the best performance of the quartet I've ever heard, but very well sung, and certainly historic. The old-style high note ending, of course, not approved of by Verdi (I believe).
Absolutely wonderful. Too bad Siepi never sang the role, I would have paid to see that. Thanks for posting this, I am not sure how it could be sung any better.
Thank you for posting a wonderful quartet with Mr. Cesare!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They certainly all are beautiful people. I can see why Furtwängler developed a crush on Thebom.
Not the most musically delivered quartet from Rigoletto, but a great and glamorous performance nonetheless.
Thank you.

Thebom looks like a movie star - what a figure, and a voice to match it!
and Peters cracked me up with her little jumps around 2:52, trying to make herself more audible...
