Funny how broadawy actors are allways the same, they keep changing between parts and plays, but they are allways the same.....you may see Aaron in Wicked, Rent, Annaleigh in wicked, rent, Idina in Rent, Wicked....and thats true for all the others. How funny
I wish people could just shut up and listen to the performance sometimes, not cheer at dumb times throughout. The opener of this song, before he starts singing, is one of my favorite parts of this song, as he starts to think about what he's about to sing... I wish that hadn't been ruined. Anyone know what I mean?
I'm from a European country, where the custom is to cheer only, when there's a pause beween songs -- between, never within. When a song is great, attention increase, almost as if we'd forget to breathe, giving space to the singer. You just store up your enthusiasm till the artist is finished. THEN you can clap and stomp and yell and whoooooo as much as you want.
It's very strange, and rather annoying, to hear people when I want to concentrate on Aaron.
he's extremely talented but this isn't a good part for him. great voice, but too classical to pull off a rockstar character. looking at him, and listening to him, i would never believe he was a former junkie with aids who sung in a rock band.
Just a general note, just because actors don't stop to sign autographs at stage door doesn't mean they're a jerk. They just have other things to do. I'm totally shocked that anyone would say Aaron's arrogant or a jerk. All of the times I've met him at stage door he was a total sweetheart and very humble. Just saying.
No doubt, his talent is amazing. But like Kerry Ellis as Elphaba, the singing is amazing, but the acting isn't there. I didn't feel the emotion in this song. This song has the potential to make me and many others teary-eyed. In my opinion, Aaron just wasn't right for this role. Sorry.
@jaszon29 i just tear up from hearing the words, it's not the actor alone that makes the song. it's the chords and rhythm and beat, and the voice, but most importantly,it's the message the song gives
@jaszon29 you don't see it? i do. it's different than most but i see the sincerity and i see roger's insecurities and fears shine through beautifully.
I love how he made it his own, it wasn't just a carbon copy of the OBC version, it was him owning the song and making it just as awesome as the original but in a totally different way.
@SnowGirl098 You got me thinking. Oh man, Aaron is such a powerful performer. Did you see the emotion in his eyes in this performance. He is brilliant.
@pcp1980 Aaron said in an interview that when screen tested for the role, he was required to negotiate a contract right away and he decided not to negotiate because he didn't want to walk from Next to Normal or Catch Me If You Can. Ryan didn't really reject him to play Finn, it was pretty much Aaron's decision.
Aaron Tveit is too soft looking... he's cute, not edgy lol Good voice, love the guy but he couldn't play dark, broody and trouble if his life depended on it! Amazing job though :)
if he isn't doing autographs then why on the next to normal page (you have to search a little) and catch me if you can, people say the exact opposite. they comment that they have received autographs and on catch me if you can someone said she got to pose with him for a picture. just wanted to give another side to the story.
@sherrislack Yeah, I actually met him a few days ago after Catch Me if You Can, and he was sooooooo nice! He was willing to take pictures, he tried to give an autograph for anyone who asked and even had some conversations with folks. He asked me my name and said he hoped I enjoyed the show (which I did), ya know, the usual stuff....idk maybe he was having an off day, or has changed over time, but he seems like a good guy now :)
@Discombobulate2490 Yeah, my friend and I got an autograph and he spent about 2 minutes chatting and taking a photo (due to a ssssllllooowwww camera). Super nice and humble. I think anyone can have an off day and get in a bad mood, though. I manage retail, so it gets tough sometimes to realize that people are pissy, but not directly at you. Who knows what had happened that day.
@thestar13 The fact that I've met him from Next to Normal and the whole cast was happy to meet the fans and everything but he just kind of brushed everyone off and told them he wasn't interested in autographes. Then some of the other cast memebers started say things like "Yeah he can be a dick sometimes." I was really surprising. Amazing talent doesn't make a person amazing enough to act like that.
@Hexelsfayt Funny I just talked to someone I know who worked with him and he said the EXACT same thing, wow I would never expect that from him.... Wow, its to bad he lets talent get to him like that
@Hexelsfayt Are we talking about the same person? Aaron's the farthest thing from a dick....I've met him four times (once after n2n and three times after cmiyc) and he is one of the sweetest guys ever.
I'm sorry, but if anyone is in a production with Vanessa Hudgins, then they've already sunk quite low. Average voice, average performance. Not very moving at all. Gorgeous man, lack of talent.
@akchills Nick Jonas played Marius in Les Miserables, surrounded by actors and actresses of the age. Was he good? No. Was he still there? Yeah. *shrug* I'll see if I can find more videos of Aaron, but this performance is less than moving, and that's what One Song Glory is supposed to be. It's meant to be Roger stripped down to his bare emotions - his soliloquy. Aaron...eh.
@EriksWanderingChild okay... I don't exactly see what that example has to do with my point tbh. you said he lacked talent and had an average voice and his theatre experience so far would beg to differ imo. You can not enjoy his performance but I thought your criticism was harsh and untrue
Damn, this was a very muted performance. The music was weird, the vocals were subpar, and the character was...missing. Tveit needs to stick to ballads and swooning women. In addition, who asked Neil Patrick Harris to direct a musical? He needs to stick with sitcoms. "Rent" is one of my favorite shows, but this performance was lacking.
@MageSutek While I agree the music was strange, I think that Tveit gave life to Roger. As for Neil Patrick Harris, he has been in several musicals including the 2nd national tour of RENT where he played Mark.
Really? I felt like he gave Roger a new perspectve. It may be different than the original, but I think he does a fantastic job. Neil Patrick Harris was in theater before he was in "How I Met Your Mother".
@Darkort Oh, totes agree he gave "Roger" a new swing, but it was representative of a completely different character. I had the privilege of meeting Jonathan Larson in New York about eight months before he passed away in 1996. He was ill, I had just recovered from a serious illness, and I was only a sophomore in high school. The one big thing I remember talking to him about was how he connected to the characters as he had created them, so when I see all this acting license to do whatever to...
...a character that an actor feels like doing, it bugs the hell out of me. In fairness, I have never seen Tveit do an entire show, so I guess I should not dog on him too much. That being said, I saw the revival of "Rent" this past summer when many of the original cast came back to reprise their roles. I think it has been etched in my mind that those actors will always be the only "true" actors for the show, and that is a failing on my part. I did the same with "Cats," "Les Mis," "Wicked,"...
..."Phantom," "Annie," and many more. I need to break myself of that. But yeah, a new perspective, sure. I just hope he did not rewrite "Roger's" character, because that would be a shame. As far as Neil Patrick Harris goes, he has been doing theatre since he was 12. I remember him getting Broadway offers when he was still starring in "Doogie Howser MD," and I was hella young when that show was on, and I still think I am older than he is. Anyway, acting is one thing. Directing something else.
I like Aaron I really do. With that being said he has had issues with intonation in every video I've ever watched of him. He has a good voice but he's no master. Most importantly though he lacks the rock edge to play this role. the whole thing feels a little soft when the top end is too sweet. I don't think this is a bad performance just not the best.
@ikatfabric I know right! So do I. And whenever I see him in any clips from Catch Me If You Can, same thing happens. And when he was Fiyero. And Link.
I love this guy's voice, but he still sounds a little too classical for this kind of music. But, what do I know? He's making big bucks and I'm not... lol
If Roger is so poor and never really leaves the flat, why does he bother to send money on nail polish. :-P Seriously, though, I had my doubts about Aaron at first, but I really think he excelled in his role and was one of the standouts of the production.
@adrianrox5050 Ummm... he has stated in several interviews that he is straight and has talked about past girlfriends... so unless you know him personally and he told yo he's gay, I'd say we all go on believing him...
I'm so mad- everyone else is fine, but Vanessa sounds like someone whining in pain...ikr weird but she DOES....couldve gotton someone much much much better for Mimi.
Overall a really good job. I've seen this 11 times with 9 different "Roger"s. The acting during the song was really good. Granted his isn't the best vocal of this song but it is still very good. He was on key through the whole song though you could tell the last high note was at the top of his vocal range. But it still worked.
Of course Adam will always be the best Roger for most of us but the others I've heard have all been really good. Great jobs Aaron and Neil.
@SteveAndrade623 Um, stop being snobby and cocky about it. "But it still worked" "Of course Adam will always be the best Roger." Every actor brings something different to every role and as an actor myself, it's always intimidating stepping into the shoes of a well known role played by a well known actor and it's annoying when "fan people" like you say things like an original artist was the BEST. Any actor can tell you it's not about who's best, it's what you bring to a role.
everyone who says aaron butchered this song is totally wrong. he may not have done as good of a job as the others have in the past but there is no way aaron ruined this song! he put his own twist to it and no matter what he still has a great voice. stop being so harsh... seriously.
I know what it is about a man in black nail polish that I find to be such a turn on (OIt doesn't help that Mr. Tveit is one sexy beast anyway) but I was almost too distracted by the sexiness to notice how amazing is voice is... ALMOST! All I'm saying is that Aaron Tveit is an amazing singer and actor... and if he's gay I'll strongly investing in a sex change.
oh ya and i want to add this. For people who compare this aaron kid to adam pascal or will chase and still say hes good or ok you are 100 percent wrong he is terrible compared to them and he still sucks when not compared to them.
@zombiegirl626 Plaid pants. That look WAY TIGHT. I don't even have a guy thing, and I'm wincing in sympathetic pain every time he takes a step. I want to write the costumers a stern letter.
can his voice get be any more mesmerizing? So glad that Next To Normal decided to feature him as the main singer in that show so his talent could be shown more.
I <3 Aaron Tveit. Plain and simple.

adrianrox5050 11 months ago

SteveAndrade623 11 months ago 5
@SteveAndrade623 ummm have you heard him in N2N, that is definitely not the top of his range.
thegaythespian 11 months ago 3
@SteveAndrade623 Um, stop being snobby and cocky about it. "But it still worked" "Of course Adam will always be the best Roger." Every actor brings something different to every role and as an actor myself, it's always intimidating stepping into the shoes of a well known role played by a well known actor and it's annoying when "fan people" like you say things like an original artist was the BEST. Any actor can tell you it's not about who's best, it's what you bring to a role.

@duvatney For some reason, everyone loves Seasons of Love but this is undoubtedly the better song
mikey2312 11 months ago 3
not the greatest Roger performance, he was a little flat at times, but pretty emotional and executed well enough. good job.
maquiladora21 11 months ago
Not my ideal Roger, but Aaron is so amazing I could cry. It's just so weird seeing him not be Gabe......now THAT was a role made for Aaron.
BroadwaysDreamer 11 months ago 5
everyone who says aaron butchered this song is totally wrong. he may not have done as good of a job as the others have in the past but there is no way aaron ruined this song! he put his own twist to it and no matter what he still has a great voice. stop being so harsh... seriously.

I know what it is about a man in black nail polish that I find to be such a turn on (OIt doesn't help that Mr. Tveit is one sexy beast anyway) but I was almost too distracted by the sexiness to notice how amazing is voice is... ALMOST! All I'm saying is that Aaron Tveit is an amazing singer and actor... and if he's gay I'll strongly investing in a sex change.

this song is so amazing!!! and Aaron has an amazing voice!!!

I think Aaron Tveit's amazing, but I don't think this was the right part for him. However, you can't say he didn't make the role his own!

If someone had told me that Aaron Tveit was in Rent i WOULD HAVE ASSUMED IT WAS AS mark but he totally ROCKS Rodger as well!!!!

@Singer112345
oh ya and i want to add this. For people who compare this aaron kid to adam pascal or will chase and still say hes good or ok you are 100 percent wrong he is terrible compared to them and he still sucks when not compared to them.
Singer112345 1 year ago
Does he really have the tatoos? Or are they fake for this role?

@crazysquirrel7 they are fake.

I gotta say, Adam Pascal is my favorite in this role, but I never get tired of seeing Aaron perform. He puts so much emotion in every song <3

Hes good but Adam Pascal's better

His voice isn't rugged enough to play Rodger, but this was still absolutely amazing.

Aaron Tveit, I love you and this is an incr4edible performance but I speak for all of us when I say: What. Are. You. Wearing.
zombiegirl626 1 year ago
@zombiegirl626 Plaid pants. That look WAY TIGHT. I don't even have a guy thing, and I'm wincing in sympathetic pain every time he takes a step. I want to write the costumers a stern letter.

I have always loved Aarons voice but to me he's not really a Roger. That's just my opinion

Aaron is too buff to play mark.
jicadriver12 1 year ago
this isnt that good ya'll...he would be a better mark.

I always pictured him more as a Mark rather than a Roger..
WlCKEDKlD100 1 year ago 4
can his voice get be any more mesmerizing? So glad that Next To Normal decided to feature him as the main singer in that show so his talent could be shown more.
terumi91 1 year ago 2
If RENT ever has a MAJOR revival (with the new orchestrations) I fully expect Aaron to play Roger. Adam Pascal has got absolutely nothing on him.
Also, Telly Leung as Angel. 'Nuff said.

he is so beautiful.
cory monteith is the love of my life and i cant picture him NOT being finn
but aaron tveit is so beautiful...and wouldve done one hell of a duet w/ lea michele.
i personally think that if he rocked this look...he could be a kickass puck. the casanova badass with a heart of gold. ANYONE ELSE SEE IT?
mrsdavidcook3 1 year ago
I love that he doesn't try to kill his voice personally. I can only imagine how much adam pascal's voice hurt after performing.
moonlightsky31 1 year ago
@moonlightsky31 Adam didn't have the vocal training or the tenor range that Aaron has, so there you go...
