okay, how is it possible that the cthulhu cult summoned ctulhu in coney island,if r'lyeh is in the pacific ocean near antartica.they were only chanting while holding the necronomicon..and cthulhu came out.that doesnt make any sense.:/
cthulhu will only come out when the stars are right.RIGHT??
This episode is peppered with all sorts of Mythos nods. From names of fellow Mythos writers like (August) Derleth, (Clark) Ashton Smith and (Robert. E) Howard to more obscure one like Nodens.
I'm guessing they spelled the name "Cathulhu" because the Arkham House publishing company is the copyright holder of the "Cthulhu Mythos" proper, and this is a parody, albeit a well done and well-researched parody. I'm guessing they had to ask permission to make this, though, because they use Arkham and the Necronomicon.
@Sh4d0wKat that or because saying "cthulhu" or writing it brings him closer.(or so i've heard) i guess cuz of fear or respect for cthulhu and H.P Lovecraft.:o
i'll be damned!!!!!!!! no kidding winston zedmore is played by Arsenio Hall..., I knew about about Lorenzo music playing venkman. frank welker was perfect as ray stance.think maurice la marche might have palyed "brain" from animaniacs "pinky and the brain",plays Egon.
@noliesundead Then youve never read Call of Cthulhu.: It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.
Respond to this video... If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings...
4:10 is THE MOST EPIC scene in all of the ghostbusters animated series if you ask me. The way they're straining to hold the proton streams on the coaster is just so freaking well drawn. They must've blown a LOT of money on the animation budget of this one!
@Cen20504:10 is also the most NERDGASMIC scene in the Ghostbusters series, because Egon's explanation is absolutely correct. When I saw it for the first time as a kid, it made me want a real proton pack. Subsequently, it gave me the motivation to build the real device that most resembles the proton pack in operating principle: the ion ray gun! And here's a video of my ion ray gun in action: watch?v=LabLee1My-A
They should have ditched the series and just made a love craft show, it seems they knew what they were doing, and could have amounted to so much more.
so much more detail better than the high contrast modern crap they put on nowadays
gummie bears, the racoons, ren and stimpy, hey arnold, aaahh real monsters, rocko's modern life, blinky bill, X-men(we all know what x-men cartoons i am talking about before it turned rubbish) two stupid dogs, conan the barbarian, the jetsons, and thats just a few ...............today i just watch repeats of old cartoons the quality of todays cartoons will never as good
Some really nice effects animation in the climax. I haven't seen this episode since I was seven. I really only remembered the final part with Peter on the Rollar coaster and the calamari line.
@DamienNeverwinter Well, there's also Bast and Uldar, but Lovecraft never called them by that title, Derleth did, though most people consider his stories to be canon as well (Except for the whole morality thing.)
@DamienNeverwinter Auguste Derleth? He's the reason why HPL's so popular nowadays. He was a friend of Lovecraft, along with Robert Howard and Clark Ashton Smith. They all contributed to the Cthulhu Mythos in one way or another.
@CallingCtulhu I know Derleth is the one who championed Howards work after he passed away, and I know Clark AS was an artist who was friends of HPL but I've never seen their work. Could you recommend anything?
@DamienNeverwinter I'm not too familiar with CAS's work, though I know a few from word of mouth, such as The Dark Eidolon, The Weaver in the Vault, and The Coming of the White Worm. As for Derleth, there's the Trail of Cthulhu. It's not a particularly Lovecraftian novel, since the protagonists win in the end, but it has its merits.
@CallingCtulhu I also looked up some stuff on Cthulhu. Alice Derleth in this episode could possibly be a decendent of August Derleth who was a correspondent of HP Lovecraft. He made the Cthulhu Mythos back in the 30's. You are right they did some major research on this episode, probably why I love this one so much.
This is probably my favorite episode. I can't begin to tell you how epic it is to see Peter Venkman of the Ghostbusters fighting Cthulhu, one of the most famous deities of the Cthuluhu Mythos, on a fucking roller coaster! Although knowing how powerful the real Cthulhu is the Ghostbusters wouldn't stand a chance, as the mere sight of him would drive them insane, in addition to his god-like power, but hey it's a kids cartoon and they have to win somehow.
@Yabuturtle Well they're kind of used to insanely ugly things by now. Cthulhu's 'insanity inducing visage' isn't an exact power, it's just he's so horrifying to behold that he drives people insane. The Ghost Busters are just used to horrifyingly hidious monsters by now. And they had to use something from Cthuluhu mythos to defeat him (their world's Cthuluhu mythos anyway), and impaling him on the bow of a ship defeated him in Call of Cthulhu, so a lightning bolt is logical.
@Yabuturtle in the movie they beat a planet eater. I think Cthulhu is within their abilities. (though this version of Peter makes it less plausible as he's more of a schmuck.)
And even after all the effert, Cthulhu isn't really defeated. Like all 'heros' within the Cthulhu Mythos, they can only delay the inevitable awakening of the Old Ones and their High Priest.
well, Gozzer the Gozerian is a god, Cthulhu is the same, but it doesn't matter. to be enough a protonic laser and they vanish. What kind of gods are they?
I liked it, but it would have been great if someone's sanity snapped and we saw some truly maniacal laughter. Thumbs up all the same for its awesomeness anyway.
"he makes Gozer look like little Mary Sunshine."...LOVE THAT LINE, LOVE TIHS EPISODE!!!! Easily the best animated episode of the entire series!!!!! LOVE how they can barely hold the streams on target after they go from normal power to full power! the hair blowing back, barely able to open their eyes, hands struggling to control the proton rifles! JUST PLAIN EPIC
Wow, I used to watch that show all the time when I was a kid. I forgot how trip-ass some of those episodes were, gave me nightmares, like that episode about What. Good stuff!
Man, shouldn't crossing the streams been a more effective way of dealing with an elder god? I guess total protonic reversal for every big bad is too cliche.

They would probably just go insane as soon as they set eyes on his eldritch being, not to mention the legions of Cthulhi and Fishmen that would rise from the sea to destroy the cities of man. Cthulhu could also have teleported their minds to some hellish otherworld to witness the sheer inhumanity of the universe and shatter their minds.

The REAL Cthulhu would slough that lightning right off and keep coming. "That is not dead which can eternal lie, yet with stranger aeons, even Death may die." Don't fuck with Cthulhu... PERIOD.
The funny thing is that the cult only manged to summon an oddly large spawn, Very unlikely they would be able to summon cthulhu himself, they weren't even in the equator.
I have a couple of question. Is there really such myth about Cathulu or is it only "virtual myth"? And if its reall, are there any people who doing all this cult stuff? and why to the heck they would doing this? Why they might wake up Cuthulu, if its a kind of powerful monster?
@metal87power The mythos was created by H. P. Lovecraft based on a book that may or may not be real or from its supposed origins. As for cults you never know. If there are and they've tried it probably hasn't worked due a number of reasons (like really bad accents and a god that really doesn't care). Why would they try it? They were stupid enough to believe they could control a deity for their own ends. Interesting, real or not.
@nunquamamittolupus the necronomicon is purely lovecraft's invention, as are the pnakotic manuscrpits. lovecraft mentions three versions; the mad arab's original arabic , olaous wormius' latin, and dr dee's english. these never existed. however there ARE several versions in print, mostly from mass market paperbacks. i believe the first was printed in '77. had one myself about 17 years ago.
@nunquamamittolupus part 2, cults) as the necronomicon is a fictitious work created less than a century ago, their existance is highly unlikely. on the other hand, there are jedi in britain; its been recognized as an actual religion there so you never know. as for releasing a great old one from its prison, if they were real youd be doing that in the hopes that youd be allowed to live, or even rewarded for it. no great old one could be controlled once released...
Not quite; The resurrection of the great old ones is inevitable, and no reward would be worth what follows. You'd be doing it in the hopes that you'd die first and be spared the horror to come.
Lol if only humans could fathom what Cthulu is...if "It" was to rise from the oceans depth nothing on the Surface would be able to stop "It"....May The Elder Things watch over us all...
You seem to forget this is the fucking GHOSTBUSTERS we're talking about. The combined forces of Venkman, Ray, Egon and Winston can kick ANYTHING'S ass.
@Jokerhamil Umm, hm. And Cthulu is a God. Fuck the Ghostbusters, he'll melt their minds, and make them eat their own insides, all while slowly and painfully peeling their souls apart and devouring the pieces!
@hinph But in our last moments of life we could spot the true gamers among us, as there pavlov conditioning will make them immidiatly create new characters when seeing cthulhu
Teaching kids about Cthulhu since the old days, oh and in case you didn't notice. That was Cathulhu, Cthulhu's brother who is red instead of green. Also it came and left through a portal from Cthulhu's home world while Cthulhu still sleeps deep within our waters.

Kinda makes you wonder: Gozer Vs. Cthulu... who comes out on top, and how much of the world is still habitable to humans afterward?

@NutNapalm Yup. He most recently wrote some issues of the Thor comic. He's also going to make a cameo appearance in the Thor film.
He's written a bunch of RGB episodes.

The funny thing is that the cult only manged to summon an oddly large spawn, Very unlikely they would be able to summon cthulhu himself, they weren't even in the equator.
KrypticGuy666 1 year ago
Silly Cthulhu, forgetting he consumes 1d6 investigators per round.

sphereballs 1 year ago 8
@sphereballs Probably a nod to Frank Welker's work on Scooby-Doo.
L1701 1 year ago
@sphereballs because it went off the air before Ghostbusters did and some of the writers came over from that show. Eveyone thought it would be funny!

I have a couple of question. Is there really such myth about Cathulu or is it only "virtual myth"? And if its reall, are there any people who doing all this cult stuff? and why to the heck they would doing this? Why they might wake up Cuthulu, if its a kind of powerful monster?
metal87power 1 year ago
@metal87power The mythos was created by H. P. Lovecraft based on a book that may or may not be real or from its supposed origins. As for cults you never know. If there are and they've tried it probably hasn't worked due a number of reasons (like really bad accents and a god that really doesn't care). Why would they try it? They were stupid enough to believe they could control a deity for their own ends. Interesting, real or not.
nunquamamittolupus 1 year ago
@nunquamamittolupus the necronomicon is purely lovecraft's invention, as are the pnakotic manuscrpits. lovecraft mentions three versions; the mad arab's original arabic , olaous wormius' latin, and dr dee's english. these never existed. however there ARE several versions in print, mostly from mass market paperbacks. i believe the first was printed in '77. had one myself about 17 years ago.
wctawney 1 year ago
@nunquamamittolupus part 2, cults) as the necronomicon is a fictitious work created less than a century ago, their existance is highly unlikely. on the other hand, there are jedi in britain; its been recognized as an actual religion there so you never know. as for releasing a great old one from its prison, if they were real youd be doing that in the hopes that youd be allowed to live, or even rewarded for it. no great old one could be controlled once released...
wctawney 1 year ago
@wctawney
Not quite; The resurrection of the great old ones is inevitable, and no reward would be worth what follows. You'd be doing it in the hopes that you'd die first and be spared the horror to come.
ChisaiiKamui 1 year ago
@ChisaiiKamui point taken; you never really know whats going on in the mind of a cultist lol

@Jokerhamil This peisodes proves that while people can have nightmares about Cthulhu, Cthulhu has nightmares about the Ghostbusters.
L1701 1 year ago 2
@Jokerhamil Umm, hm. And Cthulu is a God. Fuck the Ghostbusters, he'll melt their minds, and make them eat their own insides, all while slowly and painfully peeling their souls apart and devouring the pieces!

In a real life encounter with Cthulhu it would be best, of course, to simply abandon hope.

@hinph But in our last moments of life we could spot the true gamers among us, as there pavlov conditioning will make them immidiatly create new characters when seeing cthulhu
