@htimsdj He,s both,he brought classical music more approuchable to all kind of people because they don,t have to dress up, sit still and be silent but sing along, clap along, dance enjoy themselves.Nothing wrong with that. He,s an entertainer for sure but one who play,s on a real Stradivaruis, that,s a thing that only a real musician does;-)
There are certain things that shouldn't be messed with...one of them is Leroy Anderson's version of Sleigh Ride. It's crisp, choppy, and moving...as if one was on a horse-drawn sleigh on a winter's day or night. This is too polished and has no chop, or clop either! The brass could be deeper, the strings choppier, and the percussion stronger, and nowhere near the foot-tapping, ride evoking image that the Anderson piece (and Boston Pops) delivers.
@scorpdewd Yes, some artistic choices were made that are less than desireable than others. However, when you are at the same artistic level as Rieu, then you can talk.
Has anyone heard Rieu SOLO before??? his sound is always masked by the musicians behind him.... in that case, i can play as well we him..... just a tux, a smile and a violin....
Andre Rieu is absolutely horrible. He is the McDonald's of music. At best his crap should only be heard in elevators. No wait, then we'd be trapped and forced to listen.
I agree with AbleInTruth that it is NOT the Boston Pops. The Pops version really captures the rhythm of the horse trotting through the snow while Rieu's does not. While I find it very hard to warm up to Andre Rieu and his "muzak", I won't go so far as to say we Americans are the best at all forms of entertainment.
Not too bad... it is NOT the Boston Pops though. Hey I'm surprised that they were able to achieve this success. Germanic speaking Austria, not bad. This type of Entertainment is about being American. We are the #1 country in the world for Entertainment bar none. We are simply the BEST! Amen.
Rieu he ruins a composers intent with massive amounts of schlock.. Worse , Rieu has made schlock his career. But that is understandable since the only musical technique Rieu knows is schlock.
Rieu.. destroys the syncopation clip and the forward snap of this jazz composition. I don't think his stage performance arrangements could ever capture the nuance of Leroy Anderson's music. I think He does better in the schnapps department.
Also, I have students who love what he does with bolero.
Not too bad a version of this winter musical classic. But, I agree, it lacks the pizazz that, for example, the Boston Pops gives it. You might say it's performed a bit too smoothly.
Schlittenfahrt...more like Schlittenfart

Alas it is not the best rendition of Sleigh Ride.
Rieu smooths out the staccato rhythms of the song too much.
That staccato rhythmn is the essence of the song. It's the jingling of the sleigh bells as the sleigh glides through the winter air.

Maybe that's why this version has "shit-n-fart" added to it?
