NFPA 1500, Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program (NFPA, 1997) states that “the fire department shall provide each member with the appropriate protective clothing and protective equipment to provide protection from the hazards to which the member is likely to be exposed. Such protective clothing and protective equipment shall be suitable for the tasks that the member is expected to perform” (p. 1500-13).
@18dmedic In addition, NFPA 1500 states, “the fire department shall establish standard operating procedures for the use of wildland protective clothing and equipment and that fire department members who engage in or are exposed to the hazards of wildland firefighting shall be provided with and use a protective ensemble that meets the requirements of NFPA 1977" (p. 1500-17). NFPA 1500 does not distinguish between structural and wildland fire services in establishing these standards (NFPA, 1997).
Who cares why they are wearing turnout gear. Maybe that is all they were issued. Not every department can afford wildland gear on top of structure gear and it becomes even less important for department's that do not run a lot of brush fires.
my first brush fire i was not issued wildland gear, i had to wear turnout and i did over heat, but hey we are talking about 10 acres and 15mile per hour winds so i would rather have turnout gear on than my brush geaar
i am volunteer ff i was only issued structure and as told tha if we have wildland fire to just wear regular clothes so who knows maybe they are a volunteer fd and dont have wildland gear
@mabas21 yes so that i may be but i work for a dept in a town that has only 2 stop lights and thats the tuth so we have a ton of acres for a wildfire to happen in fact had one happen monday but you have to realize it's what the dept has funds for
@ccfdexplorer100 it also depends if you are wearing any synthetic clothing as part of your street clothes. synthetic does not hold up very well under fire conditions. at the time, my department did not have policy on wildland operations. most of us wore our bunkers or a combination of jeans and bunker jacket, hood, helmet on the very very hot summer days of kansas.
Why is that these guys are wearing structure gear on a wildland assignment. Not 1 of them was even carrying a fire shelter either. And what's up with the flapper?? Never seen one of them used. Guess its a different style of FF-ing
@dnotae not all wildland operations require the use of shelters be on the firefighters nor are they required to be red card certified. there are plenty of departments that have no red card certifications and still work in wildland operations as shown above and there are still many departments that wear bunker gear on wildland ops. maybe that is all they have. but you have to consult nfpa 1500 and have a program established for wildland ops.
@nyfdRIP if search nfpa guidlines theres no info for wearing turnout pants u ass...u give me the link to a page that tells u to wear turnout gear to a brush...u will overheat
not to bust ball or anything, but its not recommended to waer turnout gear during brushfires....only coat, helment and gloves if anything..but u really need jeans
Looks they need some additional training on tool use. Bunker gear is ok,just be sure to have drinking water on hand.

@ccfdexplorer100 You are right, they are not supplied with wildland gear, it's not like Lake Station has 1,000 plus acre areas to burn
