  • this is amazing! what episode of the best show is the audio ripped from?

  • Awesome karaoke... right on the notes. do not pay attention to the fools

  • @flashbeak -- word. tom cruise is a lunatic but he shoulda won this year. michael caine was bullshit for supporting that year. and was there even a direction nomination?

  • @dalmationham Cruise is the most flagrant flaw of this movie... he´s not an actor, is a dool at least.

  • She means give up the shit we are doing that is bringing us down and that is making us miserable. She IS NOT! telling us to end our lives or commit suicide you Dumbwits!. We can be abused as a child or the world might have been freaking cruel to us but we still have choices and we can take charge of our lives instead of sinking in depression and jus live with it. She is telling us to turn things around. You either wake up and do something now or never do it...either ways Its Not Going To Stop.

  • are you singing in the background or something. wtf.

  • @PolemicArts It's the cast singing... you derp.

  • @Lovedstar nope this is def. not how it was in the movie. watch the other clips on youtube. there's some weird ass dude singing over it.

  • I can't watch Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a caring, soft-hearted role. I need to see him punch someone, yelling, getting pissed off.

  • I simply love this song!

  • i LOVE this movie but this scene was kinda stupid

  • @irvykinneas What? and frogs falling from the sky isn't? I dont get you?

  • @irvykinneas Then you aren't bright enough to understand that it is it the key moment in the film that ties all of their conditions in the world as being inherently similar. Nitwit.

  • Like or dislike this scene, when has there ever been a drama with a musical number? I can't think of one. The originality is comendable. This was a risk that paid off.

  • @instanub Actually if you read the description for the video you will see that it says "including The Best Show on WFMU's Tom Scharpling", this may not be the video you wanted or the one most of the people searching wanted, or even the one that the title of the video alone indicates, but the description says exactly what it is. No one is being "hoodwinked".

  • Thanks a lot for putting in your voice and ruining the best scene. Really.

  • thanks for fucking up a beautiful song with your shitty voice

im gonna flag you for copyright violation

    you bastard

  • @brabon1 lol i had 15 of my friends flag him also

  • Who the hell is that singing in the background? Totally ruins the scene. Fail.

  • You may be done with the past, but the past isn't done with you.

  • @satexadmin Yes sir, and I believe that is called karma.

  • I uploaded the entire film.

  • SCHARPLING REEEEEMIIIIIIIIIIIIX

  • love this x

  • I just finished the movie, no man voice other then when the male actors are singing during their parts.

  • this is creepy, i made a recording of me singing this when I was younger and it sounds almost exactly like the guy in the background... it's like my fucking voice, WTF!

  • @BigLostCloud Congratulations

  • you are right.. i ve downloaded the official version somewheree, and the voice on this version has indeed another voice, also from the 2 dvd special that has been released.

  • very nice. ive downloaded this clip in HQ somewhere. especially with the actors singing along, makes it even more special. my fav. flick of all time... moves me every time

  • what a nice movie and perfect song

  • This is Paul Thomas Anderson at his finest

  • That said, I still like the fact that it's in the movie.

It gives Magnolia a sense of imperfection that's very indicative of the wild, unrestrained scope of its vision. In some strange paradoxical way, it makes sense (though I still think it doesn't fit).

  • i liked it. i don't think we are ment to think the characters are all just singing along to the same song together. i think its just there to reflect how they are all in the same sad state of mind. i could be wrong but i like how the characters are all together in this one moment even though they are all alone.

  • Have to agree with WWAAK

This was probably the weakest scene in the movie, and probably the ultimate divisive scene for people wavering between liking and hating it.

Now, I'm going to say that seeing it like this, as a clip, is much better than in the actual film. In the movie, it is totally out of place, and not in the good way (like the frogs). In certain emotional states the scene might have a certain charm, but overall, it doesn't work.

  • The greatest 3 minutes of modern film.

  • what a film

  • that he could pull this off.. a fuckin musicaln umber in a beautiful dramatic movie.... shows he's a genius

  • well f*** you it's my favorite clip

  • in what way is it pretentious? have you seen the entire film?

  • I thought the same thing until the old man started singing, and it turned genius.

  • I imagine seagal agrees.

  • liked it and thought it flowed perfectly....

  • I kinda hated this scene. The rest of the movie was perfect, the song's great by itself but it seemed kinda out of place in my opinion. That's just me though.

  • Alright, personally I thought this scene was an excellent way to tell what was told by it.

  • That's your opinion, and I respect it, but I personally thought it seemed out of place.

  • well men u know in a way is a strong scene... the end of the road for so many....

  • Couldn't agree more.

  • Out of place? are you sure the part where the frogs rain down wasn't out of place (which was awesome by the way)?

  • i LOVED the frogs. I think that was the best part of the movie in fact. But I dunno, this scene didn't quite seem right for me.

  • Are you kidding? I guess you've never seen the movie.

  • whoever's singing over this is a massive dickhead.

  • Whose voice is overlapped on top and fucking up the whole song? What a complete mess. Now I'm going to hunt down the proper movie version. Why would anyone want to make such a great piece of film music into their own ego trip?

  • I think its the actors voices, although I may be wrong, it's been a wile since I've seen it.

  • No, there's some male voice overlapping Aimee Mann's voice and all the actors voices, it's very strange as this is not the film version. Totally kills the emotion of the song dead.

  • yes you're right, he is, and it does.

  • Actually you're about to remove your comment. The original film version contained Aimee Mann with the actors singing along which is sublime. This clip has an added voice all the way through. Hear the switch at 0:12 and read the description you'll notice it says it includes Tom Scharpling from WFMU radio show The Best Show .Seems Tom likes to cover songs and some one has spliced his voice over this film clip. So for someone who has watched the film a dozen times - oops, how embarrassing for you!

  • Hahaha you owned that guy. WIN

  • sorry, my post below was an answer, and is not meant to stand freely.

also, please watch this version, as it has the real original soundtrack, with the actual actors singing, which makes it much better: watch?v=gC96_vph-oI

  • ah gotta love that western way -

that we should live in a place and time

    with facility and wealth aplenty

sufficient to bother and squabble over our upbringing

and ponder our lot in life

all the while people out in the world care only

as to how and when they will find their next meal.

  • Well the Western Way is what created all that wealth and plenty. It's in fact the only way that as ever been found to create wealth and plenty. The poor masses that you are so worried about failed to make any wealth, and therefore don't have plenty, through a combination of bad social systems and poor genetics.

I note you are using a product of the civilised wealthy world to post your quasi marxist drivel. Give the computer to the poor. The only principles worth having are the ones that cost.

  • Absolutely love this scene and movie.

  • Exelent..!

  • 映画史上に残る名シーン!

Excellent Sheen that stays on film history!

  • one of the most moving scenes I can recall in a movie

incredibly original to have a really quite serious film with a full song with actors singing over it. It ties the story lines together and is just brilliant

  • I wish this scene had concluded the movie. I lost my way through the rest of it. It was so beautiful and then became so non-sensical. Frustrating...I felt like the writers gave up on the stories and just said, "Fuck it...let's make silly stuff happen out of no where."

  • one writer, paul thomas anderson, also director. Maybe you should read some stuff he's said about the film, clears a lot up, lots of biblical imagery etc etc

  • Thx

  • you mean, you did not GET it. stop blaming the movie for your own shortcomings. ^^

  • great scene, the film is so full of symbols and deep understanding of life

  • great scene, in our 'ego divided' world we keep forgetting that everything is connected and part of the whole, past and present as well as people and events. such masterpieces remind us of the truth....

  • Awesome movie.

  • idk whos singing over...but its not from the movie, in the movie the actual actors sang over...

  • Brilliant movie! Tom Cruise&Julianne Moore - outstanding perfomance

  • Also add Melinda Dillon to that list, I thought she had the best performance in the film.

  • Who's the male singing over? Is this in the film?

  • Favorite movie of all time... Simply perfect.

  • ITS NOT GOIN TO STOP DAMNIT! ;_;

  • this song should have been nominated for an oscar.

  • Best Movie Ive Ever Seen.. Really Gets To Me

  • Its not goin to stop...

  • The best scene in the film, if you're not 'too cool' to appreciate it.

  • who's "too cool" to like this scene?

  • A lot of people think they are.

  • Nobody. This is the best thing ever.

  • Love this movie. Why is there a guys voices singing the song too?

  • i think this is actually one of the best movies ever made.

    seiously. its so powerful.

  • Applauses for Paul Thomas.

  • The movie "Magnolia" is one of the best I've ever seen and the song is beautiful

  • why are everybody complainnnnnin? HAVNT U ANYTHING IMPORTENT TO DO? omg .. and , u can also say :) JÄVLA IDIOTER HAR NI INGET ANNAT FÖR ER? yeah. i hópe u cant read swedish.

  • Fantastic!!

  • i vreally like this song , whats the prob? ✩✩✩✩✩

  • I don't mean to piss anybody off by the way

  • The singing was definately out of place. It presented the film with a corny, melodramatic atmosphere. The film was good, however this scene would have been more fitting to the overall mood of the film if the actors were not singing. Its purpose was to show the unity and common problems that we as human beings must face. We face similar things, however the singing was too inconsistent, but once again, a great film

  • I disagree. I think this film, and the discordant nature of the singing, mirrored by the sweeping arc of each character's grief made the scenes all the more effective.

Each terrible loss, of love, of trust, of compassion, was laid out in the whip lashed rain, for all to see.

Flayed by nature's lashing torrents, each character is born again, with the dark realisation that what they need above all else is perspective.

Flayed in the fire, we arise again, renewed, reborn.

  • That's a well-worded observation, and I repsect that. I trying to point out the techinicality of the scene, not the metaphoric allusions which the director was prominently trying to convey. In terms of a deeper, more rooted sense, the scene creates a very rudementary sense of common grief. The technical stand point provided a melodramatic scene which seemed out of place, but take all that out, it was an impressive film, especially the direction, and your viewpoint was great.

  • You responded in a polite way. I was expecting some asshole to try to present a point without backing it up

  • Hi

Thanks for the feedback. This comment was marked as spam, which makes it invisible. This confused me for a while, and it doesn't take much.

Don't know what the criteria for spam is, you were replying to a message, but there we go, that's computers for you.

  • Eww, how long did it take you to write that flowery shite. This movie was okay at besy, the frogs were absolutely illogical, they served no purpose. It was just shoved in there to pump up the theme of fate. If you hear the commentary for the film, Anderson says that he went through the film and made sure every clock was a certain time ( I forgot which ) but it was done to connect it to the bible. So it's just fluff.

  • It took me as long as I needed, no more no less, which is exactly how it should be.

I disagree with you about the frogs, I think on some level you haven't the cognitive ability to appreciate the point of the film. The frogs, are the point.

Rather than pumping up the theme of fate, it showed that all is fate.

Although you're entitled to your opinion, it's like Universal Suffrage, every body needs a go, whether there capable or not.

    Perhaps that was his point?

  • I think the film really needed this part, just like the frog rain it's strange. And the rest of the movie is very realistic.

  • I like seeing the actual characters singing. It adds more depth to the characters at that point in time which you wouldn't get by just having the characters against soundtrack.

Doing something it the safe way would make this sequence almost non existent to us. I don't think that was the directors intention as it occurs at quite an important part of the film.

  • Music theme is very sad man. :S

  • why in god's name doesn't this video have 5 stars?

  • it doesn't have 5 stars because the guy sang and played over the soundtrack.

  • i think is a succesful study in Robert Altman. Interesting scene

  • it is an amazing movie, but not a classic, as the underlying premise is that we are all connected and its all fate - hence the opening sequence. but, the whole thing in the film isnt really all about fate - its just real life - people's lives interact with each other - there's no real "fatalist" event. its just normal life - we are all connected some way - ie 6 degrees of separation.

great movie, but missed its own point i feel.

  • ✩✩✩✩✩

  • disfruten de todo lo que les brinda esta escena

  • wow. This just reminded me what an awesome movie this was. It totally blew me away when I first saw it. This scene was so beautiful, poetic even.

  • whats the song thats claudias playing really loud before kurring arrives at her apartment?

  • It's Momentum by Aimee Mann

  • cheers mate

  • great scene, and an amazing movie!

  • when i first saw this scene it blew me away...we are all singing the same song in a sense-all connected...wise up or life will be really shitty and you die anyway with so many regrets- I was sad for months after watching this film- it wakes you up.

  • one of the most under rated movies of all time

  • I couldn't agree more. The scene in the drug store is one of the most heart-wrenching... A terrific movie. You either get it or you don't, no judgement just my opinion.

  • No matter what, you must be wise to be not ignorant or merciless about the fools.

    Just average is not capable.

  • you're obviously just an idiot and don't understand the entire underlying purpose of this movie. maybe that's the problem

  • and why would that be then? because i dont like the added vocal? that makes sense, lol. but come on explain why i dont understand 'the underlying purpose of this movie'?? can u explain?

  • haha, ill take it u cant explain :)

  • this is a fucker :) he sang the tunes. dumb ass.

  • sorry what are you trying to say?? 'this is a fucker :) he sang the tunes' your sentence doesnt make any sense?? lol..

  • I mean this geyza who put this video, sang instead the actors. ub original video, where they sang with aimee mann. check out. never mind. even sang well :)

  • huh? no, i just dont waste my time on idiots like you. the whole movie is showing how things people consider to be big matters are really small. and they have everyone sing at one time to show how so many different problems can merge to make everyone feel a certain way.

  • oh no someone i never met thinks im a idiot whatever will i do?? lol. i asked u to explain why me not liking the added vocal meant i didnt understand the film??

  • ...sry..but yeah, i thought it was kinda the heart of the film. its like in a musical, you know? its not like me and u randomly burst out in song...its a soul kinda thing i guess

  • my question to u is quite simple, i commented that i didnt like the added vocal and u said it was because i didnt 'understand the underlying purpose of this movie' explain please what me not liking the added vocal has to do with my ability to understand the underlying purpose of this movie?

  • ...:)

  • thats what i thought, the reason u cant explain is the same reason u dont get this movie...u lack the intelligence :)

  • It's spelled kitsch, baby. And the clip is great for that reason.

  • whats with the dodgy vocal over the top? you trying to piss people off or what

  • I keep coming back to view this song, It is f*****g excellent, Makes you look at yourself for once. Cheers.

  • tom scharpling and aimmee mann should tour together.

  • Incrível, qualquer um que goste desta cena, desta música, deste filme é de extremo bom gosto.

  • english! Do you speak it Motherfucker

    ?

  • irish summer

  • This is the saddest song I have ever heard... But it's beutiful somehow...

  • Aimee Mann is Sean Penn's sister in law.

  • Nicolas Cage is Francis Ford Coppola's nephew.

  • Yes there is another voice over Aimees voice not in the film and it makes the song worse, sorry.

Hell we don't even get to hear the actors singing lol

  • Why is there someone singing over the recording? 0_o. Great scene nonetheless. One of my knew favorites...

  • Why do you have some douchebag recording his voice as well? Just put the original clip on.

  • you didn´t see the movie?, all the characters sing the song, so the voice over the original record belongs to one of the characters in the movie, John c. railly i think.

  • Yes, aicragzonumkire, I've seen the movie and know it very well. This guy singing, however, is not a part of the movie and it's not John C Reilly -- it's just some tone-deaf dude who edited his voice into the clip. In the actual movie, you lightly hear each actor sing during their own scene, not the constant male voice that's attached to this clip.

  • this is one of the best movies to come out in recent years....the cast is excellent. And Aimee Mann's music adds to the movie's sadness, passion, confusion and longing...its just brilliant.

    Thanks for sharing this...

  • I can only hope that those who watched Magnolia have access to Snopes so that the frogs, suicide v. homicide, and diver myths won't be perpetuated.

  • great Film

  • The Tom Cruise character sort of reminds me of Morton Dowmney Jr. Am I alone in this?

  • Who's singing over Aimee Mann??

  • All the actors, I believe.

  • yeah they are , but there is another voice over them which is quite clear and ANNOYING!probably the original poster.

  • Its a radio DJ who writes for the show Monk, Tom Scharpling. He did it as a joke, but someone else uploaded it without his knowledge. This isn't the only version online, so whats the fugging problem?

  • Well, I wouldn't have had any problem at all if I actually knew about this being a "joke". I was reassuring the guy above me that it wasn't just the actors singing over the original track in this case.

  • Okey dokey
