Beautiful, inspirational song from Carousel. These guys are clearly great singers, and their ending is particularly moving. However, there's something about this song and its lyrics (what, I don't know) that works best with native speakers of English. You have to be a native English-speaker for this song to really communicate. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. I love most opera and other singing in other languages.
Wrong chaps in the wrong place. And the megalomaniac who 'arranged' it ought to be hanged, as should be the creature that commissioned it!!!! Sounds really awful, and you can see it on these three gentlemen's faces!!!
why do negative people come here with negative attitudes....The song is dynamic with great meaning, these men were great, the crap today is crap!!!!!!
Of course Liverpudlians know it is from Carousel....and that we adopted it! It is world famous anyway -but Liverpool made it famous in FOOTBALLING terms....Mancs and Evertonians are so bitter about this anthem because they will never have anything as moving associated with their clubs!
@MrPhilivo Hate to disagree with you moron but Rogers and Hammerstein will be forever remembered by history as being far more important than some shitty soccer team... And I'm quite sure more people around the world can name Rogers and Hammerstein and their musical works before they could even name one member of that soccer team.
This hit the top of the charts in 1955 with the musical Carousel starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Another great song from the musical was" IF I LOVED YOU. There wasn't a dry eye in the theater when Billy Bigelow came down from heaven for his daughter's graduation to teach her one important lesson. It is still one of my favorite musicals.
The first 2 were good, of course, and then came Pavarotti.....WOWWWWW! Can you imagine if Jan Peerce had ever teamed up with him? That would have been a duet for the ages! Peerce and Pavarotti!
Unless you don't pay attention to football (soccer), then it is a song from a musical. So, for about 90% of Americans it is another great song in the American Song Book. ( ;
@wintereis57 wow!!! Liverpool adopted adopted it did they??? Are you sure??? Hold the front pages. The story is not they adopted it, it's how they adopted it ... do you know??? And how the song has been transformed by this event. Without this you wouldn't even know this song existed now ... dead and buried by now. This song is Liverpool and Liverpool is this song.
@myideatodayisthisok I don't think I can agree. That seems a very Eurocentric perspective. I had no clue that Liverpool had adopted it until I looked it up on Youtube. Remember, on this side of the Atlantic, we don't follow "soccer". Sinatra's 1945 recording was #9 on the charts long before Liverpool adopted it. And Judy Garland recorded it the same year as J&PM. It may not have been known elsewhere, but here they still perform Carousel and the film is still available.
@myideatodayisthisok I understand and appreciate the fact that outside of the United States, that the perspective is "this song is Liverpool and Liverpool is this song", but here, that is just not true. Here it is the answer to a random and obscure trivia question about the Great American Songbook. I'm glad you like the song and have such fond attachments to it. I do too. Simply put, we just see it though different eyes, and that really should not be a subject to quarrel over.
@myideatodayisthisok This song was written for a musical called carousel. Its creation is absolutely nothing to do with Liverpool apart from the fact Liverpool decided it was so good they wanted to sing it too - like several artists before them. It's great that Liverpool FC fans do use it, but it wasn't made for them and they are only one of several groups who use it as their own.
Noone is doing it better than 45,000+ people at Anfield stadium during the game.
