When I was seven, my mother made me take piano lessons. I used to hate them. Now, if she'd shown me Chico for inspiration and the piano teacher taught me to play like him, maybe I'd be able to play the piano today. Any kid with musical talent needs to be parked in front of these Chico vids on YouTube!
They were absolute geniuses. To play like this is clever, but to make it look effortless and to be so accurate is GENIUS. Thank God for The Marx Brothers.
@gillwilkinsongw You're an idiot, do not ever abuse the english language by saying genius, clever, brilliant, witty, etc to every single comedian and person, as it only shows your infinite ignorance.
@gillwilkinsongw That's where you are wrong again, moron, I am not ignorant, I have Aspergers Syndrome, a mild of Aspergers, and those with actual brainpower which you lack greatly, you are beyond hopelessly stupid. You will never succeed at anything, ever, ever. What you mean't to say was he was original, innovative, imaginative, and creative. not to say genius, you moronic imbecile.
@Mysteriousone11 Darling you can't hide behind Asperger's to justify spending your sad life putting vitriolic comments on this purely entertainments channel, you need to get out more. What makes you such an authority on everything and everyone anyway? GROW UP!
When I was a child and saw this for the first time, I couldn't get over these three guys (later I found out it was four); that my peers dismissed their stuff was pretty snobby; the brothers still crack me up nearly a half-century later.
I was never much into the Marx Brothers until a couple of years ago and watched several of their movies on DVD (which were simply brilliant). I never realized that Chico could play piano (very well I might add). These guys weren't just talented, they were multi-talented! They put to shame most of today's "talent".
I saw this when I was a kid .. a hundred years ago and have never forgotten how utterly fluid the man was. The perfect timing of his fingers coming down on the correct keys fasinated me then and now. Someone sent it to me and it's made my day! Thank you SO much Luz for sharing this. It's going in my, "superb" playlist as well as, "halarious" one. :) Songs
As great as he was, in this one there's some heavy editing, if you closely watch his notework. For instance, at 1:40, there's his famous bass rumble, but his fingers don't match. There's other, less obvious, editing work here too. But, still, I love it. :)
this became my favorite chico moment when bill marx said that this scene said a lot about chico's personality in real life which made me love and admire him even more... oh and because chico never went to rehearsals, he wasn't expecting that flute so that look of suprise he had on his face was real. =)
@ william2jack3 I too thought the same thing until the I saw a video on how to use Chico's technique on YouTube I also did research about how Chico learned piano and so forth and belive that its him
What makes watching Chico playing piano so enjoyable -- he's having a good time doing it. Harpo did the same thing playing harp. They were basically very talented musicians who didn't let all the BS of theory get in the way, but rather learned and loved their instruments, and shared that with their audiences.
When he slams the low end of the piano down it's so cool. Many tell me it sounds bad, but with that melody backing it, man it just fits right in. I... LOVE.... IT!
PS: anyone know were I could get the sheet music to this? or at least the name of the song?

I am a Marxist since a month back, Harpo is my favorite brother, but nothing amuses me more than wathing Chico shooting the keys. I have decided to become a piano player now!
Actually, Chico wanted to do it live, but the studio wouldn't allow it, because they couldn't get the accoustics right.
Harpo, on the other hand, wanted to record in the studio and then back-synch it in the movies, because he wanted the performance to be perfect. In movies, you can see him apparently playing a piano plate ("A Day at the Races"), a loom ("Go West") and other non-harps, and of course, that's him synching over his actual harp playing.
no one can find it anywhere, mate. I share your confusion cos i'd love to learn it too. I can't find it on the internet (i haven't looked around any shops)
his playing ability is bar none,. I have yet to see the natural fluid funny cartoonish playing he displays today,. plus the index finger move,. As a child I found that amazing,.
Its not just that he was a magnificent piano player, it's that he made it look so effortless! Then again, isnt that what being magnificant is all about?

Chico Marx was one of the greatest and most entertaining pianists the world will EVER see.

What was amazing is that ALL of the brothers were accomplished musicians

Chico Marx, Dudley Moore, and Victor Borge are definitely the best (and probably only) humorous pianists on the planet. It's probably more fun to watch Chico if you're a pianist like I am, but I don't have any experience in watching him as not being a pianist

On The Benny Hill Show, the Frankenstein monster sings a song to this tune:
"I have been put together rather loosely
And most of me is covered in dirt and dust
If ever I have kids, they'll all be redheads
'Cause my vital parts are showing signs of rust"

When he mashes his left hand on he keys it's the more naturally raw and beautiful moment of musicianship I've seen.
