@Leniaal Well, if you're feeling more productive with having a bunch of background OS tasks running at all times for things one uses maybe once a month then fine :P
Start your timer from the OS BOOT MENU! then stop it from when you know all the apps have loaded, in my case ATI Catalyst & NIS2011 from then I right click to get an instant response if not it's not ready yet
I have been researching ssd's vs mechanical drives for a long time now and what I found is that 15000 rpm drives are now on par with SSD's performance wise. SSD's are still faster but not by much. IMO SSD's fail because of the damn trim feature which (if i understand this correctly) won't allow you to delete data like you can in a mechanical drive otherwise I would have went with an ssd myself. The technology is still too young to be worth the expense. I believe Only Intel has trim feature
@letalmike Why would he show that? The SSD doesn't start booting until that screen, everything prior to it is just BIOS. And since this is an example of an SSD's boot speed, including the time it takes for the bios to run through is irrelevant.
i got a notebook (dell studio 1747) and i wonder if its worth it buying OCZ vertex 2? i got an i7 720qm is it fast enough or would be vertex 2 waste of moeny?
@keldererik yes but im wondering if i should buy such a fast SSD. maybe some intel which does 170MB/read write per second is enough? Because does it also need much CPU power to boot that fast?
@innie721 capacity doesnt matter since i can put 2 HDDs in my notebook. a question is an operating temperature of over 50-80° okay for an SSD or is it better for an HDD? because in the 2nd hdd slot the temp gets higher than in the other one so i wonder which hdd to put where?
my comp boots in like 5 min until its ready, so when i turn it on in the morning, i can make breakfast and when im finished, the comp is ready, dont need a pc that starts that fast :)
Ik had toen nog niet in Intel storage matrix console 'enable volume write-back cache' aangezet. Nu, welliswaar met raid0, heb ik een burst rate van 3372MB/s. Kijk maar naar mijn andere raid0 video als je me niet gelooft.
i bought a ssd instead of a better cpu. since i already had a quad core. i didnt want to waste more money on a better processor to increase performance.
But keep in mind SSD is faster at everyday use. People comfort themselves to feel good about their HDD's saying it boots as fast or faster. I know the difference, and as many reviews have stated, SSD = future.
@keldererik mine is fast as hell too yet it seems to me its glitchier and i have ten gigs missing, which is a big deal as mine is only 40 Gb, and Btw ssd = the present, titanium oxide transistor technology = the future ;) so fast theres no need for ram.
@AppleKidzTechTak yes they do MOMENTENUS X has 8gb of ssd in it to make it faster its like having 8gb of cache cool right oh and the momentinus beat the raptor from wd by a mile your hear me a mile
Nice, SSD is pretty quick, I just did this same test on my non-ssd rig (i7 920 @ 3.6ghz / boot drive is a 500GB WD SATA HD / Win 7 64bit) and it took 56.63 seconds to reach desktop, I started the stop watch from the Choose OS screen (i have XP installed on another partition so i have a dualboot menu) and stopped it after all icons appeared on desktop.
mine does 10 seconds on the dot after the bios loads with same Intel ssd. My machine is Intel i7 930@3.8gig with 6 gig of ram, 500 gig wd for storage, gtx 480....the ssd was a last minute decision, and man does it top off an already awesome machine.
umm im impressed, liked the vid and all, but @o:20 do you no why the screen read 'Windows starten' i don't think thats what the start up screen is supposed to say.
I would say the time Windows takes to boot is actually 17 seconds because bios time is not affected by the OS and the Windows boot menu can be skipped. I think measuring that way helps get rid of differences between different computers and OS's. For anything that uses GrUB, I would start timing when the OS has been picked. I don't do any professional benchmarking, so don't take it as if I were someone that is experienced in doing such things, I just like computers :D
Great little drives. I hear the prices are going to fall on a lot of these models around Q4 when the next iteration of drives get rolled out. In any case, I plan on throwing my OS and some frequently used files on my SSD, and tossing everything else on Spinpoint F3's. Can't wait for the UPS man to show up.
an ssd will give a boost on everything you start and load. it's not just booting windows where the gains are. i think another 5870 is a waste of money because there are no games right now that don't run on high with just one 5870.
It does on my 280gtx, depends what you call high, if AA counts that is correct, otherwise it runs fine on a 280, let alone a 480. If you call all high the highest resolution possible on monitors, like tripple display 7680 x 1600 (3 x 30 inchers), then you need more cards. I don't recommend crossfire or sli, google the phenomenon 'microstuttering'. Bliss is ignorance, because when you see it you want to run single card again. This microstuttering appears in maxishines videos aswell.
@keldererik: multiple GPUs are not a waste as long as you realize that in the world exist multi-monitor configurations. You're right just for the single-monitor world, but there are people who plays with 2 or more 30 inches monitor. That's the reason for having multi-GPU configurations.
Monitor refresh rate. Its a fact that 120Hz monitor shows smooth images at 30fp than 60Hz monitor at 30FPs. Analog televisions such as NTSC and PAL have framerate conversion of LESS than 30FPS, have you seen TV channels being slow ?!
You DO realize there's more to a SSD drive then boot time, correct? You have zero experience with them. If you're too lazy to read the write-ups on them, probably best just not to comment.
@opmike343 Im a benchmarker, benchmarking a ssd is about exciting as watching my sisters kids. getting a ssd at the price they are today is pointless. By the way i have built plenty of pc for clients with ssd, for a standard home PC its not worth spending the $. I agree ssd are great they are reliable faster In every way than a Sata HD. With that said, when i buy a HD i look at price per performance per volume. Right now ssd is not a wise choice for a standard home user. My opnion with respect.
@WARFOX101 a 30gb ssd to boot windows off of is £80, a 5870 is £400, they're not even comparable, not unless you go for a 250gb one, which just make you stupid, you dont need more than 50gb, and you can get a ocz vertex 2 for £120 at 60gb
@JanyPL Hey, so what should we read about hard drives that would lead us to think that SSDs are crap? SSDs pwn hard drives with performance (including the 15k.7 Cheetah), and reliability is really good, with ECC on some at least and also wear leveling on all modern ones.
Capacity and cost r the only reasons not to replace and HDD with an SSD.
@keldererik yea, a typical hard drive is more like 20MB/s when randomly accessing data (doing more than 1 task at once) vs your 500MB/s with your SSD. You must be running RAID 0 or 5
@elvin149 Well, the sandforce drives kick the Intel MLC drives, they are basically as fast as the X25-E! About $300 for the 100/128GB version of the vertex 2 sandforce drive .... I myself am going to try and wait for Intel G3 to come around so that prices will drop all across the board! look up "intel ssd roadmap" on google. 600GB!
Who knows if there new drive will be faster than the sandforce controller..
when windows completes the graphical boot, it is not a fully booted. you have to wait for other services to complete. try ubuntu and you will see what i mean.
Not only booting the OS but also other things make it worth the price:
Boot programs. Extract large compressed files. Compress files. Save files and open files.
Other than that, they are completely silent and more reliable.
You only realise this when you have an SSD. You will understand how much time you have been waiting for your slow harddisk to accomplish tasks like above.
To be Honest everyone would love one but like i said for everyday home use not really worth it...I used to work the Solid state hard-drives and they didnt impress me much
Load of crap. Go sell that shit to someone else. If you own one you are not trading it for a slow ass harddrive. Or maybe you owned one with the famous shitty JMicron controller.
@keldererik Everything is right but the more reliable part. They have a bad habit of breaking, but as long as your not a moron and buy them at best buy, most come with a pretty well extended warranty. Completely worth the price, but definately not something for people who do nothing with their computer but get on the internet.
@liidze You are comparing two operating systems that targets different kind of users and has different purposes. Fuck off with your system performance smartass talk you know exactly what I meant.
@keldererik No, I do not know what you mean. Other than gaming, I honestly can't see the purpose of windows anymore. It seems that the only people who would want to use it, are people who don't give a shit about security, reliability, speed and just overall performance. And that's okay, I guess, but it still really bothers me that so many people don't care about the quality of their purchased products.
@RatsBoulevard It bothers me that you are a Windows basher. Maybe the reliability part is your own user error. I'm using it without problems since beta. Ofcourse it takes longer to boot, it offers more without the need of a CLI for every god damn interaction.
I think the boot time isn't better a lot than on my x25-v 40gb, this can be improved by system tweaks but x25-m 80gb is ofcourse faster in applications with higher requirements ;) i suppose the song is "the pride in your eyes"
This seems slow to me. Mine goes to desktop the moment my splash screen is done (haven't tried with splash screen disabled). I literally never see the welcome screen. I use a Kingston SSD at the moment but am going to get an Intel X25 tomorrow, which is why I'm watching this. Oh well, I'll see how it does tomorrow!
my iMac has a 1 TB 7200rpm hdd and boots in 25 seconds. and that is from pushing the power button to actually be able to use the computer. but for windows I guess this time is great :D

To be Honest everyone would love one but like i said for everyday home use not really worth it...I used to work the Solid state hard-drives and they didnt impress me much

@corps3y
Load of crap. Go sell that shit to someone else. If you own one you are not trading it for a slow ass harddrive. Or maybe you owned one with the famous shitty JMicron controller.

@corps3y well, my pc is kinda slow, while the rig is awesome, so it's clear that the hard drive is the bottleneck. I buy a SSD to make it fast :)
iAW3S0ME 1 year ago
@keldererik Everything is right but the more reliable part. They have a bad habit of breaking, but as long as your not a moron and buy them at best buy, most come with a pretty well extended warranty. Completely worth the price, but definately not something for people who do nothing with their computer but get on the internet.

Kurdestar 1 year ago
@Kurdestar nice.
I wonder what an ssd would do on windows xp.
keldererik 1 year ago
@keldererik The pc would start in 25 secs i think if you get a nice board with the SSD

@liidze You are comparing two operating systems that targets different kind of users and has different purposes. Fuck off with your system performance smartass talk you know exactly what I meant.
keldererik 1 year ago
@keldererik No, I do not know what you mean. Other than gaming, I honestly can't see the purpose of windows anymore. It seems that the only people who would want to use it, are people who don't give a shit about security, reliability, speed and just overall performance. And that's okay, I guess, but it still really bothers me that so many people don't care about the quality of their purchased products.
RatsBoulevard 1 year ago
@RatsBoulevard It bothers me that you are a Windows basher. Maybe the reliability part is your own user error. I'm using it without problems since beta. Ofcourse it takes longer to boot, it offers more without the need of a CLI for every god damn interaction.

@liidze You idiot!
Ubuntu = No games like ".exe" FAIL!
Win7 rulez
Eragon86micky 1 year ago
@liidze Ubuntu is not better than windows because wich games can you play good with ubuntu. And the Design from XP vista and Se7en is great (i think)
Kurdestar 1 year ago
I think the boot time isn't better a lot than on my x25-v 40gb, this can be improved by system tweaks but x25-m 80gb is ofcourse faster in applications with higher requirements ;) i suppose the song is "the pride in your eyes"

music sucks, your mobile rocks. your ssd too. :)
