Can anyone tell me how the lyrics match up with the music or have a version where the lyrics are sung along? I'd really like to learn it but no one I've asked seems to know...
@auburnblowsdonkey Sorry, my little brother always has to get on my account and reply to people...that's seriously the truth. He does it all the time. However, you did beat a mediocre team by 10 points...that's all I'm gonna say lol.
@auburnblowsdonkey How many all time Championships you got? All time wins? Did you even have a team before Spurrier came along? Not really. Glad you guys are finally fading back to obscurity while we are just part of the cycle.
Although I dont/cant go to any tennessee games, they play this song when the team comes out through the T, and after every touchdown, then a silent version of it while the team is about to kick the extra point, then when its up and good play the rest louder, then go into rocky top. So, I think they play this a lot...just my opinion. go vols!
This is so much less annoying than Rocky Top. Maybe its because they don't play it after every play like they do with Rocky Top. Tenn gets a TD cue Rocky Top, Tenn gets a first down cue Rocky Top, Tenn gets 3 yards on the play cue Rocky Top, Tenn gets sacked for minus 10 yards cue Rocky Top, Tenn fumbles the ball cue Rocky Top.
@Shelovesmusic14 No, I'm a huge Oregon Ducks fan. Lived in Eugene my entire life and I'm currently a student at the UofO. I travelled to Knoxville for the game, and Rocky Top annoyed me, it was play way too much. This song is way better.
most prefer rocky top , though its unofficial, and why doesnt anyone pay attention to UT basketball? They're actually better than the football team now
I wish our band played this song more. it would sound awesome after interceptions and junk. Not that I dont love Rocky Top or don't want to hear it, but this song is NEVER... EVER... EVER... EVER played at games. I mean it's pretty bad when 9/10ths of your fan base don't even know these lyrics. and this is supposed to be our official fight song? what a joke.
Yep, this song plays at every touchdown followed by Rocky Top.. This is also the song that is played when the Vols break the tunnel and run through the T.
@RondoGuitarDude No dude, then it would be a played out gimmick like rocky top. Sure we all love to sing a long but its after every pick, extra point, field goal, etc. They play down the field when we put up 6 on em. Right where it belongs, I wouldn't change a thing.
@RondoGuitarDude I do. I hate hearing it 45 times a game. 65 if it's basketball. I like that at least our fight song is sacred enough that they don't play it enough to make me dislike it too.
Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. They play this song every time Tennesse scores a touchdown. I too love this song, but to say that it is never played is bogus. Pay better attention before making such crazy statements.
No need to get snippy...I couldn't tell whether or not my comment got posted. We are all VOL fans here. However, coming from a former Pride Member...I can honestly say that we feel that we play it enough during every touchdown, pregame, salute to the hill, and the march to the stadium. If you want to see the Pride play it more, stop whining about it on Youtube and do something about it by calling the director of bands..Dr. Sousa.
@meliessaanne you flat out said I don't know what I'm talking about and are now calling me a whiner. of course I'm going to get defensive. my comment said we don't play it enough during games. to me, during the game means the 60 minutes that players are on the field, not the pregame, the march, or salute to the hill (all of which I enjoy and love). but the only time it's played during games is after a TD when the crowd is too excited to notice, and even then it's only the last phrase of the song
@meliessaanne basically an extremely condensed version of the song, the extra point is up and good, and then were playing Rocky Top (which I also love). I want to hear Down The Field with the entire verse, and at a point in the game where people will notice it.
I'm not whining, just making a suggestion and giving my 2 cents. Comment was from over a year ago. But thanks for your time in the band, we all appreciate the hard work, GO VOLS
@RondoGuitarDude The Pride of the Southland plays "Down the Field" not only during pre-game, but directly after the team scores a touchdown or field goal before playing "Rocky Top" The Band respects it as the official fight song. Rocky Top just seems to pump up the fans and motivate the team more than "Down the Field" does, so it is played more often.
@RondoGuitarDude If this is their football song then do they have a song for their Basketball team? It's almost College Football season, and Vols play Montana to start the season. It's going to be a terrific year for the Vols. I'm not saying they win the National Championship plus go undefeated but I think they can end the losing streak vs LSU, Florida, win more games in the SEC.
@RondoGuitarDude Are you serious? Rocky Top IS Tennessee. People leave with the orange burned in their eyes and Rocky Top bouncing in their ears. Not taking away from this song, but you can't say play Rocky Top less. Rocky Top is about volume. Besides this song isn't even original, two other teams (Nevada and Yale) have the same one. Not to mention they play this after every touchdown/field goal.
my substitute teacher, Mr. Lionel King wrote this when he was a drum major for Tennesse University. He is 79 right now. He has been teaching music for 60 years!
He's not wrong. Being a Vol fan, this piqued my curiosity. I just looked it up and (to my surprise) Yale, Tennessee and Nevada all play different versions of the same fight song. Yale, being the oldest of the three schools, was indeed the one who originated "Down the Field."
This is the official University of Tennessee, Knoxville fight song. This version is indeed from an old LP album when Doctor Jay Julian was the director. I was in the "Pride of the Southland" band at the time; I believe it was 1968 or 1969.
Yale and Syracuse Universities both share this fight song with Tennessee.
Rocky Top came along much later and has become the "unofficial" UT fight song.
This song does have it's own special place. It is the first thing that is played after a score, either touchdown or field goal, but more importantly it is the song that is played during the one of the best parts of a gameday at Neyland, and that is when the Pride of the Southland opens the T and the team runs through. Glad to see someone else likes the official fight song, though.
The University of Tennessee Men's Chorale has begun performing this fight song and other more traditional ones at their concerts. It's been good to see those brought back to life with folks singing the lyrics.
Those of us who graduated in the 70's remember this so well. Rocky Top may be more well known, but Down the Field will always be in my heart, a 4th generation UT graduate.

Props to Tennesee, scheduling a home/home series with my Buckeyes even though it won't happen for like another decade. Nice to see an SEC team with balls!
