I was in the military and got out and got an education and a good life but I understand all the men and women who really have no where else to go if it wasn't for the military. They would end up working in a factory or in construction or at Walmart. It is sad but true. The military gives them a place to be.
(continued) Then one day I broke, it was something ridiculous that they ordered me to do--I screamed and told them to fuck off and marched out to the fantail of the ship to cool off. When I came back to the office I thought I was really in for it--the office was real quiet--like they had been talking and shut up when I came back. Then the chief looked at me and told me they were going to recommend me for advancement. I can't explain it, but it was a turning point in my life.
@DandAinTac Damn good story. It was one of two things, they wanted to push you as far as you'd go and see how long it took you to stand up for yourself...or they were just being dicks and cut you a break after you told them to fuck off. Hey, it's the Navy, so who knows?
@SpartanSniper3 You know, I've thought about it for years. I was very young and dumb, and I'm sure they realized I was lazy and could do a lot better, but I don't think they really planned it that way. I think when I finally snapped and stormed out of the office telling them to fuck off I think they talked about it, and realized I was there. The chief instigator was going through marriage problems too, so I think he was being a bit of a dick also. Anyway,...
@SpartanSniper3 ...anyway, I've been wanting to tell it for some time, because I think it's a valuable lesson for young men--knowing when to choke it down, listen to your superiors and do what your told, and when to stand up and call bullshit. I think it takes an event like this to really get the lesson right for a lot of young men--we are often either too timid, or too much of a hothead--and finding the right balance: leading to self-awareness, confidence, maturity, assertiveness.
This scene reminds me of when I was a Seaman in the Navy, when I was first in the fleet. My senior POs, after a few months, started riding me hard--down right abusive--at least psychologically. I did everything they wanted, and they kept moving the goal posts, and asking how I expected to be recommended for advancement if I didn't do this or that. It was a miserable time and went on for weeks, maybe even months. I jumped over every hoop. (continued)
