I have a mentally handicapped cousin that used to ruthlessly pull my hair when I was between 3 and 5. I think I earned the right to use the word Retard.
What people are failing to recognize with this video is that it's about ending the negative connotation associated with all these words. They are simply making the public aware that it is offensive to individuals with disabilities when people casually throw around the word "retard" as a way of indicating someone has done something foolish. Don't have a fit about freedom of speech, just know that your words are offensive and the people who are offended have the same right to defend their selves.
filming these psa videos may help put a stop to the use of offensive words, but they're certainly not helping with bullying towards obesity (just as damaging mentally).
hmm...i wonder what's going to have more of an effect on the world. a psa video or a glee episode?
in the end, you just need to stick your middle finger up at the world and move on.
it's the only way to get through life, i gained that insightful knowledge the hard way.
Seriously, some people are so ignorant of others and their feelings it makes my head hurt.
'Retard' has now been changed into something negative and derogatory therefore it is offensive. What someone has been born with isn't their fault, it's just who they are. Because we've changed it into something offensive, the people that are disabled aren't going to feel supported are they? They're going to feel as if they're mocked and put into a separate box within society which is not acceptable.
People seem to be so arrogant that they don't understand how hurtful this word is wether its used directly to someone with mental disabilities or to use as slang towards a friend. Whenever a family member of someone with disabilities hears this the feel like someone has ripped their heart out, shredded it into tiny pieces and fed it to a hungry dog. It makes them feel isolated and alone and again reminds them that they don't fit in. Imagine what it must do to the person who actually has a disab
Grouping racial slurs with the word "retard" is in itself offensive. Retard is a scientifically correct term that doesn't just apply to mental retardation. Using retard as an insult is offensive, yes, but the same is true of any other insult.
I agree with where they're coming from but then maybe we should make people stop saying 'I'm so OCD' when they obsess about something or 'I'm so depressed' when they're just bummed out cause it's insulting to people who actually have those problems...like where does it stop...I think words can be used in context to mean different things and not be offensive.
Here's what I hate, people claiming that it's okay to say such things because free speech is in the american constitution. What people forget is that free speech was a privilege that was given to us because our four fathers believed that we were responsible enough to handle that kind of freedom. It was made so that we can spread truth and intelligent opinions, not to be little disrespectful jerks. They would be ashamed at how we've perverted that gift to be an excuse to be awful to others.
retard shouldnt be the same as slurs, it is a term for mentally challenged people with a certain IQ. its not a slur though, so many other issues that are more important though, even if it was a slur
It's disturbing how many hateful and oppressively marginalizing comments have been made. These words are just one of the many ways that marginalized groups are oppressed. Through words that dehumanize the jewish people were made to seem less than people - this allowed for the holocaust to occur. African Americans were once called negroes, but upon the group finding the term dehumanizing people began to realize the needed to stop using it - the word retard is the same.
I think it is ignorant to not use a word because it offends some people or even a group of people. Retard is defined as to "delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment" Words only have the power we give them; it is only offensive if you let it be offensive. So the real issue here is not the words themselves but, that people are giving words power that they do not deserve.
@meganbreaksfaces and before that, they were called imbeciles. does that make it okay for me to address a person with a developmental disability as such? no it doesn't. you cannot make the argument that something is okay to do just because people used to do it, as this is not the case. the r-word has acquired a very negative connotation, and it is completely inappropriate for any use. even if you don't understand this, please respect this movement.
All I can say is reading these comments broke my heart. How can asking for some respect cause so much hate? Reading these comments makes me ashamed of humanity and want to be a better person.
Seriously, guys, the reason disabled people don't like you guys saying the R word is because you're making it mean stupid, realizing it or not. If they're telling you through a TV ad, like lampshadeonthego said, then they really don't like it and you should lay off.
I'm sick of people comparing 2 words with different contexts to racial slurs. Obviously if you call someone who is mentally challenged a retard then you're obviously trying to be offensive. Same way if you call a gay guy a fag. But outside of that is a completely different context that many of us are not offended. You can't compare retard and fag to nigger. It doesn't work that way. Nigger only has one meaning. You can't misunderstood someone's intent if they say it. They're not the same. Period
It's not okay to be ignorant about things like this. My one year old cousin was diagnosed with Down Syndrome when he was born. Since then, I have completely stopped saying the "R" word. When you realize how hurtful "just words" can be, then talk.
I was literally shocked when I saw this commercial. So there I am watching TV at night while on vacation just bored and then this commercial came on. I was like "Holy shit, they said those words on TV!!! :o"
All of you think that these slurs will end, but they won't. they have been around sice god knows when and will never end. and all of you who think your helping by arguring with each other but you are just making it worse all of you are just pathetic.
I am autistic, and when I was in early school, I was called a "retard" constantly. Yes, the word can be hurtful. The funny part about it is the fact that I'm three times more intelligent than the people who called me a "retard." I am a computer programmer, locksmith, electronics technician, and author (Tech Tactics Money Saving Secrets).
Unfortunately, it seems to be OK in most cultures to put down those who are different. The use of this word should be very limited.
But it is acceptable to put that girl on the cheerleader squad out of pity? I agree with this PSA totally. But I always get the feeling that it's not acceptable to have a double standard when it comes to things like this. It's not acceptable to call her a retard but it's totally acceptable to patronize her and throw her on the squad because of a mental handicap. Political correctness gone wild.
No but it's acceptable to use those words behind your backs, which everyone is guilty of doing, whether we actually say it or if it's in the back of our minds
I wish people would understand how bad the word hurts, but obviously from reading these comments, no one sees how offensive the word has become. If someone grew up with a sibling who really is mentally retarded maybe they wouldn't laugh. You try standing in the middle of Wal-Mart with a 16 year old sister who can't speak and is kicking and screaming on the floor and you hear not only your peers but adults laugh and use the word retard in the most hurtful ways. Trust me, I've been there.
Mentally "handicapped" people were originally called the mentally retatrded, so I don't know why people are freaking out about it now. It's not necessaricly derogatory, it's just a word.
@meganbreaksfaces and before that they were called morons or imbeciles. Since "mentally handicapped" or "challenged" or whatever the current PC term is are no longer referred to as retarded then the word is no longer in official use and should therefore be fair game to slang. Just my opinion, after all imbecile and moron or variations of those words are used in everyday speech and even in official and professional transcripts
@meganbreaksfaces They still are. The clinical term for "handicapped" people is to this very day "retardation". My sister is retarded and that's exactly what we call it because that's what she is. I have also done charity work for the local "Association for Retarded Children" but I guess they must be a horrible, hateful organisation as well... this campaign is ridiculous; I am offended they compared the word "retarded" to derogatory racial slurs such as "Spic" and "N----r"
@meganbreaksfaces it only became a slur when people started to use it in a derogatory way. Fag used to mean a stack of wood or a cigar, and gay used to mean happy. Although these words started out innocent enough they evolved into hurtful slurs. Yes, retard was a medical term, but when kids started to call each other "retards" when they did something stupid, or call something they didn't like "retarded" thats when it became a problem.
@meganbreaksfaces Black people were originally called negroes, how can't you see that semantic derogation occurs? Words come to take on the negative feelings that people hold for the group they apply to.
@meganbreaksfaces for you and all the insensitive idiots watching this ad, and not able to comprehend why it's offensive, just trust those of us raising special needs children, that use of that word, especially as a pejorative, which is what it has become, is exceptionally offensive. Calling someone who is not intellectually challenged a "retard" is hurtful and harmful to those who are facing this and the families. If you cannot accept this, perhaps you need to find some empathy somewhere.
@meganbreaksfaces It's derogatory because it's slang for stupid now, and mentally handicapped people were originally called retarded- that's exactly why it's slanderous. It's not just a word, there is menacing intention behind it, calling someone who has special needs lesser than someone who doesn't.
@meganbreaksfaces It IS derogatory both because SO frequently used as a derogatory term, and because it demonstrates that you are focusing on the disability not the PERSON. Do you call people who have cancer the" cancerous"? That'd be a pretty shitty thing to say, no? You're a fucking unintelligent pathetic fool who can't even spell necessarily.
@meganbreaksfaces yes, but people have CHANGED it into something negative so now it has brought on these new meanings. When you call someone retarded in a 'jokey' way it's because they've done something stupid or bad. Don't you see that if you are disabled or handicapped you then think that something negative has labelled as who you are. Which is wrong, we shouldn't be separating people into boxes.
@meganbreaksfaces It's not about using it that way, its when someone does something idiotic and their friend calls them a retard or says "that's gay dude" or whatever, it's when you are using it as an insult that upsets people....
@meganbreaksfaces Because it's not being used as a description for those people, it's being used as a derogatory term synonymous with "stupid" when those people are NOT stupid, they're developmentally disabled. They can't help that, they don't need to be compared with jackasses who do dumb shit because it "seems fun."
A word that once characterized a medical condition (being mentally "retarded"), is now used as an insult.("you're so retarded").Would you call your friend "tetraplegic" just 'cause they tripped over something?
the words "nigger", "spic", "kike", and so on have history behind it, making it extremely offensive to say no matter what context it is being used. but retard is only a practical term that one says on the street to poke at a friend and that's all that it has ever been.
@mikecheckBKLYN There absolutely is history behind oppressive actions towards individuals with disabilities. Don't shrug it off just because you haven't heard of it.
to retard something is to inhibit it, like if you put your hands over someone's eyes you are retarding their ability to see, their vision has become retarded. The term mentally retarded simply means that their intelligence is inhibited.
Correct. And since the word is used to describe a person with emotions, and it is also being used to refer to something negative, that is where the problem lies. It it was used to refer to things in only those ways, and not to say someone is a jerk, or to say that you hate someone, then it would be different. It's association, and how it makes them feel.
When I buy some faggots from my local Iceland, I am not purchasing a homosexual to eat. And if you call someone a retard because they spill ketchup all over themselves you are NOT trying to upset people with mental disabilities.
The R-word has become stigmatized over time to signify"stupid","dumb"etc. This is due to the incorrect usage of the word, because people seem to have become "immune" to the hurtful nature of the r-word.
At the same time, the word "idiot" used to be a diagnostic term for the differing degrees of Cognitive Delay--however, nowadays, people constantly use that word to put someone down. Hopefully a change can be made so the r-word doesn't turn into something like how the word "idiot" has turned to.
and to all you idots saying that its okay to call her a retard because she is mentally retarded.... FALSE she has down syndrome know what you are talking about before you speak.
honestly guys shut up. the point of this video was to stop using the word in a hurtful way. the word "retard' or "retarded" is not someone tripping in the hallway at school or someone acting silly. it is a medical term. so calling someone "retarded" because of an action? like that doesnt even make sense... just like using the n-word is not okay or respectable either is using the r-word, so grow a pair and quit being a piece of shit and using that word.
@p3r36r1n you can't say 'I'm entitled to free speech' about EVERYTHING. there is a limit to entitlement of free speech, don't you see the difference?! It's like someone saying 'oh look at that gay tosser' and that being free speech.
There's a HUGE difference between someone being mentally challenged/handicapped and someone being retarded. Someone who is mentally challenged can't help but to be (Down Syndrome, brain damage, etc.). A retard is some that's a freakin' idiot and needs to read a book once in a while. The meaning of words changes, people. People now use "sick" to describe something cool. It happens.
I have a sister with autism, I asked her if she thought saying retarded offended her, she told me it doesn't offend her. If someone with autism doesn't find it politically incorrect, than why should we stop? I think the people out there trying to stop "th r word" are retarded (and I don't think that about the girl with down syndrome, she's AWESOME!! especially on Glee!).
@angelicakid1 well okay my brother has autism and might say something completely different. Just because one person has an opinion doesn't make it true everywhere. Don't you see that the use of 'retarded' has started being used as something negative and derogatory, even though it's something that your sister and my brother are? It's making who they are and the life they lead seem negative and 'stupid'! Thats why I never use it.
I respect the opinion of the community effected much more than I'd ever respect the opinion of people who are not within that community. Honestly, if developmentally disabled people are putting out ads telling you that it offends them, how can you not repsect that? And even if you don't consider the word retarded to have associations with developmental disablities, the use of it in that way was far too recent for you to pretend that you don't know where it comes from. Respect marginalized people
Retard IS offensive, there are other words that people can use instead of that word. I am actually surprised that this video has almost the same amounts of dislikes as likes. And by the way, how can we tell you not to say a word, if we cant tell you what the words are.
dude this was hilarious! These people actually believe this commercials are going to help? they are just going to get more people to use them starting with me.
Perfectly good word with precise usage, no need to ban it. "RETARD" 1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede. verb (used without object) 2. to be delayed. noun 3. a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine. 5. Automotive, Machinery. an adjustment made in the setting of the distributor of an internal-combustion engine so that the spark for ignition in each cylinder is generated later in the cycle.
@alcervik This PSA is trying to ban the negative connotations people have developed to be associated with the word. You have stated the definitions so now use your brain and see if any of those match up with the way people use the word in society. This isn't about banning a word it's about banning offensive ways of using words!
lol i was watching tv untill like 3:00 in the morning then im like OH CRAP i got school and i kept the tv on and turned around and went to bed then all i heard was....... its not acceptable to call me a nigger
Spread The Word by taking a stand to stop name calling and bullying. I know I have been the one on the shitty end of the stick and it hurts!!!!!!! Thank u
This is striking is because these words aren't alright to use anymore. It's jarring to hear them at the beginning. At one time they were all used as commonly as the "r" word is today. Despite a lot of whining and complaining things changed because strong people supported changing those labels. Be strong - change - if you use it; be courageous, and call out anyone who uses the r word.
Although i do not condone any use of these words to deliberately offend, i feel a little offended that the people responsible for this message don't consider that peoples opinions differ, and that something unacceptable for one, is acceptable to another.
Words and language are tools to express and it is the intention of the user that should be looked at, not the word itself.
do they realize that this wont stop anybody that has ever said anything like this from saying it again. yeah sure, it sucks that people say that kind of shit to each other, but all in all this is a waste of time and money.
@drrsuperdog Actually it does make complete sense because this PSA is about ending offensive words used towards minorities. Individuals with disabilities are considered minorities.
Saying 'retarded' as an insult/negative adjective is something that was spoken constantly at the schools I went to growing up. It's still a bit of a bad habit of mine but I understand it's not ok. Saying things are 'gay' is another thing I have trouble with. But BEING gay gives me a bit of leverage :D
not to be offensive but i just saw this commercial and was like wait...not acceptable to say fag or the N word? i hear those words constantly. i mean look at most rap and pop songs today they think "Niggah" is different than the actual N word with an er, as far as im concerned its the same as kicking and kickin'. and then not acceptable to say fag. fag is used just as much as the R word and here you go about saying its unacceptable as if its banned? kids kill themselves BECAUSE their called fags
Everyone is going on about 'they said nigger and spick' Well they have to, don't they? They say 'it's not acceptable to go around to people and call them niggers and retarted' they didn't say 'NEVER USE THOSE WORDS OR YOU'RE GOING TO MOTHERFUCKING HELL' you've missed the point of this entire video, you're all just a bit stupid.
Social standards define how we 'should or should not' use words, but words themselves have neither positive or negative meanings. I'm gay, I've been called a fag, and I'm still alive. And I don't really care.
the only way the word retarded shouldnt be used is if you are actually calling a mentally challenged person that, any other way you use it seems fine, i dont know why people make such a big deal out of it. its like saying you cant call someone stupid when they do something stupid
To the 2,618 people who disliked this video - you should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope you realize how powerful this message is, and we all look down at your terrible lack of sympathy.
Makes me wander if the word 'Autism' is willing to have the same meaning of retardation in the near future. It's today that the word autism is now classify as metal psychical handicap as a political correct term so that way who ever is low function wouldn't feel left out. To me that's outrageously ludicrous and autism is a spectrum not to be use a alternative word with the same meaning. Who ever thought of It is definitely irony in many levels.
Someone who I thought was my friend called me retarded and other 'jokes' behind my back ("Pfft, no one will ever go out with someone like *her*!" "It's okay for me to say it as long as she's not here"). And I have Asperger's Syndrome. He's never realized how much that hurt me nor even apologized. I haven't spoken to him since.
Anyone else think this commercial is 100% hypocritical when the retarded girl called another girl a "dummy" in this week's episode? I guess its okay for her to call other people names, but not vice versa?
If you call someone gay for doing something bad, that doesn't really make sense does it? If you call someone retarded because they do something really fucking stupid..... well you can see the difference.
Using racial slurs implies there is something bad about being that race. Calling someone retarded doesn't imply being retarded is bad. It obviously is. It's a literal use of the word. ie, "You are so stupid, someone could mistake you for a retard".
Yes when you say this word you dont mean it to someone who has special needs but
"When you use the R-word as slang, you really are hurting people with intellectual disabilities because of the negative connotation of your comment. The R-word has been associated with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities since its inception, so when you use the word in a negative context, you’re putting down people with intellectual disabilities, regardless of if you mean to or not"
As I said everyone is entitled to their opinion, and in my opinion if you use that word especially in reference to people then you basically show me that the R-word is first thing you think of when you see my perfectly healthy baby boy or anyone like him. You are the A-hole I will have to protect him from for his whole life. But that's my opinion of you for using it.....
I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, and as a parent of a 20 month old son with Down Syndrome, I probably have heightened sensitivity to the word, much like anyone who might be in an inter-racial relationship an hearing a derogatory term about their partener's race, regardless of the context. The R-word was originaly a medical term but has since evolved into an extermly derogatory and demoralizing word. It wasn't that long ago you could drop the N-word and people wouldn't bat an eye.
It's pretty pathetic that 2,595 people are ignorant enough to "dislike" this. I guarantee that none of those 2,595 people have ever been around a family member, friend, or child with special needs, and none of you have seen the effects of the r-word in action. This isn't a "pc mad" nation, or a liberal agenda, it's an ongoing fight to end the degradation of a population in our global community. In the same way that nigger marginalized blacks, retard marginalizes people with special needs.
I do like this post but i have two problems. 1# they didn't say anything about don't make fun of people with autism. I'm Wade and i have autism and they should add us to this ad cause we get builled too 2# On Glee they got a girl named sugar to act like she has autism so she can act how ever she wants. I how you all will understand and like this post i have been builled 1st all the way to 9th. AND THAT"S THE BOTTOM LINE!!!!
HEY YOU ALL LISTEN AND YOU LISTEN DAMN GOOD I HAVE PDD A FORM OF AUTISM AND THEY ARE SAYING YOU CAN"T SAY THE R WORD WHEN TON GLEE THAT GET A GIRL TO FAKE HAVING AUTISM TO TALK HOWEVER SHE WANTS!!!!!! AND YOU ALL THINK THIS MESSAGE DESERVES ANY LIKES WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WITH AUTISM AND ASPERGERS OR PDD GLEE SUCKS AND THEY CAN GO TO HELL
That's okay, PSA. People will just make up new horrible insults for people they don't like. totally better than a medical term being used inappropriately!
My cousin and very close friend has cerebral palsy, and is often called a retard or retarded. He's the one who showed me this and was actually complaining about its idiocy. He said, though I'm paraphrasing as this was a few days ago, "If someone needs to call me a retard to make themselves feel better, why should I take anything they say seriously?"
Also, as others have said before, the words idiot, imbecile, and moron used to be medically correct terms. Shall we all stop using those?
retarded means, "held back", It was not a bad word until people started using it as one. Calling a downs syndrome "SPECIAL" is just wrong too. They have a birth defect, and they are not "NORMAL". I'm not being mean, it's a fact. I have a retarded brother, and when I say retarded, I mean it in it's original definition. The word, "GAY" used to mean HAPPY until society changed the meaning. The words "DICK" and " Cracker" are banned in some forums. People can change ANY word to mean something dirty
So are we trying to stop the use of the word "retard" as an insult, or stamp it out altogether? Because the former I can get behind, but the latter...well, if we go down that route, then before too long we'll be campaigning to get rid of whatever word we replace "retard" with, and finally we won't have any way to talk about mental handicaps at all.
Obviously you all don't get it. People have abused the word and now has turned into a profanity. So when you call a mentally challenged person retarded your basically calling them stupid
This is basiclly a black man calling himself a "nigga" the expect us to take it seriously. I understand the whole "retard" thing. But when you have a jew calling himself a kike, people are going to laugh.
we should stop using "insane" and "crazy" also since they can't help being the way they are and throwing those words around lightly just demeans their condition
As a man of color it makes me feel just warm and fuzzy being compared to someone who was born with an actual disability. As if to say being born a minority is an impediment. This PSA is incredibly racist. I'm sure the creators had good intentions but this was poorly executed.
words are things, or theyre words things, so when i say "words" i just released a thing but you dont see the thing when i say it you heard the thing before you saw the thing... its heard before its seen
so because your offended by a MEDICAL TERM used to describe your condition, I am not suppose to use a constitutional right? Excuse me, I have Free Speech... and I will say what I want, where I want to whom I want. I am not going to intentionally be hurtful or harmful to anyone, because that is not who I am, but I don't think anyone should legislate for the removal of a word because they are hurt by it. That is the first step to losing Free Speech for us all.
At first, I thought this commercial was awesome, but the more thought I gave it, the more I realized I was wrong. At the end, Lauren Potter says it's not acceptable to call her retarded... actually, yes, it is. She is, definitionally, retarded. The people in the beginning in the commercial are correct, those names are simply slurs. They have no backing. But, retarded does. "slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness, emotional development, academic progress, etc." Yep.
Oh man, these comments man.
I can't stop laughing.

@meganbreaksfaces and before that, they were called imbeciles. does that make it okay for me to address a person with a developmental disability as such? no it doesn't. you cannot make the argument that something is okay to do just because people used to do it, as this is not the case. the r-word has acquired a very negative connotation, and it is completely inappropriate for any use. even if you don't understand this, please respect this movement.

why does getting offended suddenly give someone the right to mandate what others say
justifying the restriction of the use of words simply based only on the claim that it hurts some people's feelings is absurd
if something as harmless as someone's vocabulary can actually emotionally hurt you, then you have a serious issue with society and reality

Period

Im a little offended by this campaign because its like saying:

They are hypocrites but they think they are justified because they are on their side.

RealCoolFreakinGuy 1 month ago
@meganbreaksfaces it only became a slur when people started to use it in a derogatory way. Fag used to mean a stack of wood or a cigar, and gay used to mean happy. Although these words started out innocent enough they evolved into hurtful slurs. Yes, retard was a medical term, but when kids started to call each other "retards" when they did something stupid, or call something they didn't like "retarded" thats when it became a problem.

p00tfacemcgee 4 weeks ago
@meganbreaksfaces It IS derogatory both because SO frequently used as a derogatory term, and because it demonstrates that you are focusing on the disability not the PERSON. xBoldAsLove 4 weeks ago
@meganbreaksfaces yes, but people have CHANGED it into something negative so now it has brought on these new meanings. When you call someone retarded in a 'jokey' way it's because they've done something stupid or bad. @saiyajinmillina
Correct. And since the word is used to describe a person with emotions, and it is also being used to refer to something negative, that is where the problem lies. It it was used to refer to things in only those ways, and not to say someone is a jerk, or to say that you hate someone, then it would be different. It's association, and how it makes them feel.

People can change ANY word to mean something dirty

we should stop using "insane" and "crazy" also since they can't help being the way they are and throwing those words around lightly just demeans their condition

So when I start calling my friends intellectually disabled when they screw up on things will that eventually be banned too?

As a man of color it makes me feel just warm and fuzzy being compared to someone who was born with an actual disability. As if to say being born a minority is an impediment. This PSA is incredibly racist. I'm sure the creators had good intentions but this was poorly executed.

words are things, or theyre words things, so when i say "words" i just released a thing but you dont see the thing when i say it you heard the thing before you saw the thing... its heard before its seen

before watching this video, my little sister didn't know the words "spic," "chink," and "kike." Now she does, and she's asking me what they mean xD

How dare people use a word that accurately describes someone to describe them.

why does this have so many dislikes? I'm confused.

so because your offended by a MEDICAL TERM used to describe your condition, I am not suppose to use a constitutional right?

Except you CAN call someone a nigger, you CAN call someone a chink or spick or anything like that.
It isn't illegal to hate another group of people, its not illegal to be racist.
It is however illegal to act on racism or act on these things.
I can call my black friend a nigger... but the moment i disclude him from something, thats the bad part.
People are so fucking uptight about THEIR SPECIAL SIGNIFIGANT IDENTITY... grow up and realize we are all human.
