the only thing i dont understand is why some drummers have two bass drums when they are using a double pedal anyways. Is the image of having two separate bass drums really THAT important to metal?
@Whitesekurity13 Yes. For one reason: When playing double base at high speeds (180 bpm and higher) if you're using a double pedal it chokes the drum head causing a funk sound which can only be fixed by the use of triggers or some intense fucking around in the studio.. So, that's why you'll see most metal drummers use two base drums, aside from looking bad ass, it allows the drums to breathe (resonate in between strokes) and give a better sounding double bass.
@ProfessorBastard no i get that, i mean he has two bass drums, but instead of two single pedals, he is using a double. Nothing is hitting the left bass drum.
I have met and seen Daniel perform a good amount of times, hands down this guy is amazing and a class act as well. Gotta love his style hes my inspiration for drumming!!!!!
the drums fill is my favorite in this in flames song. cuz most of their other songs are dominated by either anders or the 2 guitarists. but the drums in this one is just the best
Outstanding drummer! Met him after a show they played in Hollywood. Him and Bjorn are by far the coolest guys of the 5. He was asking what my favorite in flames album was, and my favorite song, and was just really cool and genuine. One thing I find interesting, and I couldn't tell if he still does this from this video, but he has 2 bass drums, but his kick pedals only hit one. The other one literally has no function. It's just for show. Not sure if that's still the case.
.. are you really sure that professional drummer cannot play hard and fast? This isnt even a topic here to discuss. The world is full of show off drummers... filling every second with billions of kicks. but still the best drumming is technically clean and understandable.
Daniel Svensson is one of the very best metal drummers. And my total favourite
@alainjepp i agree that speed aint everything in drumming. And i personally digg alot of what daniel does with in flames. But i most also say that i think the recent album is a bit boring drumwise. But tbh the whole album was a let down, compared to earlier releases. Not saying it's musicly bad. Just not what i expected from in flames. But tho it was a pleasent surprise that when i saw them live cuple of weeks ago for the third time, they played the best show ever.
For now i have the latest album, and know every note by heart..so i can answer to you.. i agree theres not much to compare to earlier albums but actually thats the thing that makes the last release so special... i also had my own expectations before but it all turned a huge suprise after the first listening. :)
@alainjepp well i think they are going the wrong direction, am sorry to use such hideous words, but sellouts, they make the music softer to reach a broader audience, instead of pleasing the fans that took them to where they are by going heavier. everyone knows in flames nowadays, you don't have to be a metal fan to like them. and when i said they did a good show was mostly because they only played 1 or 2 songs from the new album...
I totally agree with you! in flames have gone more easy listening for now... fortunately they havent lost theyre ability to make real good music... i suprised because of the "construction" of the songs and the whole album.. so many different and new. New melodies, Anderses vocals, totally different approaching- thanks to Bjorn, he made it and love it. I dont expect they create anything like from 90s anymore.. anything that goes for the money goes for the masses..
I Hate people who disscredit musicians just because their drummers, drums take as much talent and skill as any other instrument. Drumming may be easier to pick up then say guitar but it takes as much time and comitment if not more to master.
Love Daniel and the whole In Flames x). favourite band! Btw Daniel is not the best drummer in the world, but that doesnt matter becuase the way hes playing is GREAT for In Flames!!
i love in flames i think theyr an awesome band. but daniel is really far from being the best drummer. the drum parts in in flames are incredibly easy to play, even i can play most(not all) of them and ive been playing drums for about a year. im not saying theyr bad or anything they fit in well. guess my point is in flames is an awesome band, daniel is a good drummer, but really far from the best :P
@HyporiZ I guess you haven't tried any of the more complicated ones. He's not the best in the world, not even close. But you've got to be a wonderchild more or less to be able to play the majority of In Flames songs after only a year!
@ACDCman1727 sorry? i said in flames songs are easy to play(compared to alot of other metal bands) i never said that its bad because its not hard to play ... whos the troll here :/
@Oxpost not the "majority" of the songs. i havent even tried to play that many. sure they have songs that are pretty hard, but most of them are very technically easy to play, im not a wonderchild =)
@HyporiZ Try to play Leeches, Take this life, Crawling through knives from Take this life album. And March to the shore, the mirrors truth, Drenched in fear from A sense of purpose.
@skateboardlover22 yes they have harder songs. i probably cant play the songs u mentioned. but that doesnt mean theyr hard, ive been playing for a year. i just meant if u compare them to alot of other metal bands, in flames drum tracks are easy. im not bashing on in flames nor their drummer, i love in flames and i think the drums sound good ... my point was that daniel is really far from being the best metal drummer, which he is.
I think all can agree that Daniel's not the world's greatest drummer, but i think his drumparts is allways very tasteful att fitting to the guitar riffs.
hes alright, but drummers who have two bass drums but use a double bass pedal are fucking losers haha. i could understand why they would do that for recording purposes. but or live scenerios whats the point of adding a drum if your not going to use it.
@Synetik4 the point of adding the drum is pretty much just to fill the void and keep your kit spaced out. Plus tuning two bass drums is really time consuming and having a double pedal has its advantages.
@deathmetal293 i know i use a double bass pedal, tuning two bass drums to the same pitch is irratating. but seriously, the set looks cooler, but definitely doesnt make it any easier to set up, its just another drum to work around. ive tried two bass drums, and i do too enjoy the look but after a while its just less room for other attachments, pedals etc...
@Synetik4 its different if your using a drum rack, i dont know if you are or not but a friend of mine uses one and has two bass drums just as daniel has in the video. no need for stands so theres usually a big space where another bass drum would go.
@deathmetal293 yeah i do use a drum rack haha. its true you have room for another kick drum. but why? if your not going to use it then its only there for looks, which isnt really a bad thing because it does look cool, im just saying, if ever you want further attachements or hardware etc, it could take up room for no reason.
@Synetik4 I appreciate your comment...many years ago (when I had my acoustic set) I bought another bass drum for "appearance" but without thinking about how it would affect my set up (spatially)...consequently, I never used it (and it's sitting in my kitchen where it's storing a bag of items I don't even use - so THIS is why I bought this extra bass drum!!!...hehe)...double bass pedals are much more accommodating (space-wise)...
@Synetik4 I definately agree with you about tuning the two bass drums to the same pitch. it sucks. But there is just something about actually using the other bass drum that sounds so much more powerful. with a double pedal it takes away from the resonance of the bass drum. It feels better to me too. but to each his own
@uhstud68 no i know that. its because with a double bass pedal, the second beater hits the batter head while its still resonating so it doesnt get a chance to ring out as much.
@Vienershmaken well it depends what factors you consider as metal drumming? he does play very clean and with good technique but others like chris adler and jason bittner in my personal opinion play better with more energy and speed, and to me thats metal drumming
@pdpdrummer1337, Energy and speed certainly are two very defining elements of extreme metal drumming. Both of which are more than generously represented on this album, A Sense of Purpose (2008) and more so in In Flames' previous release, Come Clarity (2006). Daniel is exceptional with his abilities with old styled hardcore punk style one-and-two-ee-and, as well as traditional metal double bass 16ths and 32nds, not to mention typical metal style fills.
@Vienershmaken oh i completely agree with you he does have all the elements but i watch him play and i just dont enjoy it as much as watching someone like mike portnoy or chris adler, but i do understand what your saying
i had a dream last night he p;ayed guitar cos jesper left and he asked me to play drums.....sad it was over such a good band and such a good drummer..and an amazing kit great double bass work

cause its easier. his second bassdrum is only for show. the drumset looks bigger. his drumtech have to tune only ONE bassdrum. he needs only ONE microphone for ONE bassdrum
I've been there at the meinl drum festival. it was his first gig without a band and infront of 2000drummers!!! he was quite nervous but i think he made a great job although he is no clinic drummer at all. live the drumms sounded better than this rough mix
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it just frustrates me when people have two bass drums and use a double kick. sure its easier to mic and all that but id rather not look "metal" and have one bass drum than have two and just have one there for show making u look like a poser.
Mightykong shall die a very long painful death 0.o, going around saying things like that for no reason is gonna get you completely floored by a random fucker one day, the only reason metal sucks to you is because you dont have an open mind to everything, seriously, grow up kid
i think hi's kicks are awesome in this video, altho on the albums with in flames they sound shit, low and uneaven, but that might be becouse of the mixing,or they just prefer it that way, nice in this vid tho...
i don't play any music haha, sorry what i meant by i am used to it being closer i just meant that most of the other drummers from the other bands i listen have to hi-hat way closer to their body and it just looks weird having it this far away lol
does anyone know what drumkit he is using?

it just frustrates me when people have two bass drums and use a double kick. sure its easier to mic and all that but id rather not look "metal" and have one bass drum than have two and just have one there for show making u look like a poser.

This guy reminds me a bit of Jason Bitner. He's a good metal drummer, no doubt, but a bit sterile.

METAL SUCKS, GO TO HELL FUCKERS!!!!
mightykong101 2 years ago
Mightykong shall die a very long painful death 0.o, going around saying things like that for no reason is gonna get you completely floored by a random fucker one day, the only reason metal sucks to you is because you dont have an open mind to everything, seriously, grow up kid

mightykong likes empire of the sun, enough said, lolz

1- Metal doesn't suck, it's just you.
2- Hell doesn't exist. And if 'God' was real, he'd hate you.

i think hi's kicks are awesome in this video, altho on the albums with in flames they sound shit, low and uneaven, but that might be becouse of the mixing,or they just prefer it that way, nice in this vid tho...

i love the double kicks
xReinhartx 2 years ago 2
i think the hi-hat has a little bit powerful sound but the toms arent so bad.
ValentineSoldier 2 years ago
the one thing i don't like about Daniel is how he places the hi-hat so far from the snare and his body, i am used to it being a lot closer.
xReinhartx 2 years ago
what type of music do you play? yeah the only thing i dont like is his toms, like some other people said. too dull and tight for me.
kfizzle441 2 years ago
i don't play any music haha, sorry what i meant by i am used to it being closer i just meant that most of the other drummers from the other bands i listen have to hi-hat way closer to their body and it just looks weird having it this far away lol
xReinhartx 2 years ago
oh well my band is like pop punk/metalcore and i like my hats pretty far out and pretty high up.
kfizzle441 2 years ago
great cymbals , great drumming.
although the hihat is really heavy for my taste, and those toms ... yuck
