I remember perpetually being a year behind each BBVS when they came out. And then don't get me started on WOF or SMN!
I was mildly disappointed to learn that Natas' name was actually only a Lithuanian masculine form of Natalia, and not the manifestation of evil that I thought was so cool in my Reign in Blood days...
Pity that out of these three that only Gonz lasted continually into the 90's, but cool that they _all_ contributed to other artistic media besides the street and board...
No you probably couldnt, you would have been one of the people in the crowd. You gotta understand how inovative these skaters are for that time, doing the tricks they were doing at the time was too much to even comprehend for most people.
maybe you could've... a lot of people have forgotten just how surf and party the scene was... the fucked up thing was that when the party was on, I was mormon. Took a lot of heat for that in those days... but never underestimate the sheer creative spark that drove these guys to do vert tricks on flat ground (if that doesn't define 'drunk and evicted from the skatepark', I don't know what does). And these guys are second generation compared to Lucero and Blender!
80´s...good times! Times of Christian Hosoi and Natas Kaupas, my 2 favourites American skaters in that time. Too, In that time, here in Brazil we had god skaters, like Rui Muleque, beto or die (my favourite brazilian shape- by lifestyle), fernandinho batman, Cupim, Mureta, Alexandre Ribeiro, Sérgio negrão, tron and others. Too, I remember that I had a shape of rob roskop (my favourite), trucks tracker (I dreamed of having a Gullwing) and santa cruz's wheels. (U.S. products were expensive)
It's natural that the Americans elect an American, and of course, that a Brazilian say "Bob!". I remember the Rodney Mullen, in the 80s, as the king of the freestyle mode and Tony Hawk in vertical. But, to elect the best of all, I think we have to see who was the best overall (freestyle, street, vert ramp and mega). Mullen is the king on the ground and I think in vert, is Bob. Perhaps, by the history of the skateboard, Tony Hawk is the best in general?...
80's... In that time, here in Brazil, we only watching on tv, Hosoi and Hawk disputing the hegemony of the global skateboarding, and dreaming to see, in a day, a Brazilian skater in this place. The time has passed and the dream became a reality ... Bob Burnquist, Sandro Dias, among many others at the top of the world skating! What a pride! (we can not forget about the older Brazilians skaters that are part of this, too)
soccer = Pelé, basketball = Michael Jordan, tenis = Federer, surfboarding = kelly Slater, skateboarding = Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist? (For me, is Bob. And for you? Who is the king?)
Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony Hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (unfortuneately it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.
No, Pele is the BOB BURNQUIST of futbal!.....check my lame clips of building bob's corkscrew...bob doesn't just invent tricks, he re-invents the perception of reality and what is possible.bob and D.Way are the past, present and future.
Natas did an ollie one foot at 1:36 or it looked like one. I don't remember that trick becoming too popular until around '90 I think. Listen close, you'll hear a guy say "That was cool" right after he does it. Awesome vid.
man, this video brings back fine memories! If only i (or just my knees) was 16 again! gonzo and natas were the ollie Kings!!! Not to kick the progress that skating has made today, but skateboarding back then was truly a lifestyle. i guess thats why old farts like us are still tuned in so.
not trying to doubt or anything but i dont really believe your nollie trey would look anything near as nice as natas' carving on the flatground, its STYLE that matters bro
im all for pushing the progression of technical tricks and everything but 80's pro's were much more about how tricks were done rather than how hard they were
This contest started the evollooutin of what skateboarding is today. If you went back who knows what skateboarding would be like? triple heelflips at that time would of lit some fires as did these pros for the future of skateboarding the best shown here insane history lesson "sacto" much respect to all who ride the wheeled planked.
mikewmartin--i totally agree. tommy had a style and grace--landing (or like you said, even not!) every trick with knees bent--then gliding into the next spontaneous motion. may not have been the most technically talented skater--but certainly one of the most elegant, stylish, and graceful of all time.

Good to know that I could have been Skatepro in the mid 80is. The "park" is so funny... But those earlygrab 360's were sweet.

when I see this I can feel the magic,
when I watch a video made after 1992 I can't feel it anymore...
who agrees?

I do, just love the guys from my era, then again we used to look at the Dogtown guyz like they were stupid, so I don't judge anymore

@38Weissbier I agree about the phenomenon, just not the precise year. :)
rebusd 1 year ago
@38Weissbier Agree about the thing but not the year, I would set the limit to 1999.
1992 saw the sickest tech' exploits, well it was so much sketchy but still necessary to skateboarding's evolution.
and the rest of the nineties saw Muska, Thomas,... pushing the limits of urban equipement.
Well, nineties are the decades of limits : limits of tech, limits of hammers, as the eighties were the limits of style...
After 2000, nothing new grew, and it became so boring.
