The federal govt. needs to wipe out several lame programs and create the DOD: Department of Drumming and Bozzio ought to be its secretary. Hell, just create an art & music department and make Quincy Jones the head. He can give Bozzio the job. This country lacks culture but Terry certainly doesn't. This piece is so musical and yet so simple. Actually a piece one could learn to play w/o studying for years.
This cat is awesome,i don't care wut anybody say,Terry can be mah instructor, mah mentor, wut ever,i would love to have his skills on the set, amoung many other drummers such as charlie adams, gerald heyward, teddy campbell, marvin mcquitty, aaron spears....
This man is a God!!! Using the gong like some sort of ride cymbal...only he cuold come up with that and make it work. The accuracy of his touch and the incredible mix and balance of the sound...i think he will be remembered forever!
@Hamgammy He starts with a 16th note double stroke between the right foot and left hand wile keeping quarter notes on his hi-hat(roto-tom thing). Wile he is doing this he is improvising with his right hand. He then switches to a 16th note double stroke between he right hand and right foot wile improvising with his left hand. There is also a melody that he returns to every so often.
There is something snobby about someone with a drum-set this big. Like saying you have to be able to afford this kit to play like me...hes pretty good, wouldn't compare him to steve gadd or dave weckl, that's just me.
@jshields01 Typically I would think that too, about people having drum sets this big, but I think this guy just LOVES drumming and he wanted to extend his creativity by having more and more shit! For him, it serves a purpose. He uses it all too. Maybe doesn't use it all in the same solo but I don't play every fret on my guitar when playing one song. Maybe most couldn't afford this kind of kit. But Terry earned it all because of his drumming.
@guitarbridgecleaner As a fellow Canadian and as a professional drummer & still a student for 4 decades,I've always loved and been proud of Neil but he is not on the same level as Terry. Neil would never have gotten the gig with Frank Zappa, The Brecker Brothers or U.K. If you listen to Terry's work in these bands you will understand. Additionally, one would not be able to play in any of those bands without serious schooling in latin & jazz - Neil is self taught with no expertise in those areas
This was one of first drum VHS video's I ever bought. back when I was a novice. Watching this and listening to him talk about practicing 8-9 hrs a day made me want to quit..haha i guess if your Terry Bozzio you can practice all you want all day
This sounds like a precursor to his "Samba Ousado" piece; there are many of the same themes and ideas (including, but not limited to, the double stroke ostinato itself).
@1995pg these videos were made 1993. those were terry's signature paiste cymbals. "VISIONS series, professional level; Both Signature Alloy and CuSn8 alloy cymbals, produced in the early mid 90s. Were treated with COLORSOUND process. Offered in Black only. Designed for Terry Bozzio." <---Wikipedia

judging by the sound of these, am i right in saying that this COULD be the set he used to record polytown? certainly it looks to be in the right sort of era given his hairstyle (i know that's such an odd thing to mention, but...)
@mikeanelson It's all in the engineering. A great engineer can make the Quaker oatmeal boxes that we all started on sound amazing! Of course, his amazing technique doesn't hurt either! LOL! On the opposite side, great sounding drums can be ruined by an inexperienced engineer. I do agree that the tones in this video are really fantastic.
This was done almost 20 years ago. It is an instructional video, but for the most part it's a video about idea's and concepts that differ from the norm. Nobody was doing this stuff back then. Bozzio is the reason Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Grant Collins, and Kenny ADJ exist. He has inspired so many drummers world wide, yet he doesn't credit for it. They took Bozzio's idea's and went their own way with it. I think that's good.
@patrickforpresident My friend had the pleasure of meeting him not too long ago. He said that he's one of the nicest guys around. He did a drum solo for them, and they went to pizza hut and discussed all of his ideas with him and some of his friends. He can do all of those crazy things better than the next guy, but he sees the drums as much more of a "musical" rather than a technical instrument.
@233kid ... Yup ... i`ve met Terry 5 or 6 times over the last 20 years ... he has always been super nice to me and everyone else I have seen him come in contact with
@patrickforpresident ... I completely agree .... all the shit that these cats are doing today comes from Terry ... especially the Marco Minimens and the king of Bozzio clones , Mike Mangini .... Terry started stacking cymbals ...Terry started soloing over complex ostinatos ... Terry started the call and answer between feet and hands ... Terry started the remote hi hats ... Terry invented Spoke cymbals .... the list of innovations and inventions from Terry Bozzio goes on and on and on
Insane! This has somehow of a tribal feel to it. I must say the snare's sound plays a big part to it! Are his drums tuned to pitch in this video (I know they are right now, but then...)?
that would be cool. I have one of the CDs which has this exact solo on it. I also have tape #2 which I bought years after release. Both are really good.
hard to say... i actually know Terry, and i am good friends with someone who knows him better. i will try to remember to ask about these tapes and see if he is planing on offering them on dvd.
He should have stuck with the ponytail. lol
