Ah, the problems with plasma tend to be from Qt - try installing the latest version (Qt 4.5.2, I believe), it solved a lot of issues and makes stuff REALLY fast now!
Yeah, I agree that the (K)ubuntu guys are extremely helpful - I wish they would use more tested and stable stuff, though... in 9.04, plasma is especially ugly because of Qt 4.5.0, as an example. Otherwise, they're a great bunch, and Canonical has done a great job on a human-friendly Linux distro.

C2D 2ghz, 2 gig ram and a gf 8600m GT. Nothing special. But keep it mind, that recording sucks a lot of performance.
Color scheme is glacier.

I've been having problems with the latest nVidia drivers: I expect that's part of where your problems come from as well.
