  • Hay Guys; this is all well and good but where can I get the generator coils to squeese between the base plate and the turbine propper? It needs to be pancake thin and powerfull. I belive in this tech. and I intend to build several for my property. I just need a source for the "MEAT of the project. Thanks. AMM

  • To get perfect center on a piece of plywood, mark lines from corner to corner making an X.... It will be perfect every time!

  • nice job

  • nice job

  • I like your videos - great stuff

  • Why don't you find the center by going from corner to corner?

  • @kendigjl

That was my question as well.

Corner to corner will find the exact center of an rectangle. You can also make sure rectangles a square by weather the diagonals are the same length.

  • Craftmatic2, even if it was on a magnetic cushion it would still be geared to the generator. That's where all your friction is anyway.

  • you look like an ass sry

  • way to pull the board through rather than push....

  • cannot you use the jigsaw everything will be eashier ?????

  • why not draw lines tip to tip...

  • Couldn't you make a VAWT which uses a magnetic levitation under the bottom to remove friction, and add a ring of magnets around the outside at the top and bottom to confine the turbine inside the space entirely magnetically?

This would reduce friction to near-zero because you wouldn't need anything supporting it vertically or horizontally. It would reduce the wind footprint slightly, but the gains in friction reduction may offset this loss.

Magnets might cost too much to be worth it though

  • Vertical windmills are an order of magnitude more efficient than the large GE windmills, but the GE ones are government-endorsed and in bed with Inmelt.

  • PS: to find center of square, run string from corner to corner over the diagonal, X marks the center.

  • kak

  • we do translation and you can select Latino women **rockmycity.info**

  • Don't worry about the haters guys, the greatest minds and greatest inventions all came from the back yard scientist.

Safety measures in place today are for the guys who don't understand the physics of dangerous equipment, but if you ask me, you guys have an excellent understanding of how to use certain techniques safely, and are great teachers that can teach us how to use them safely too.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for keeping it free :)

  • That's the screwiest way to find center I think I"ve ever seen ..... I"d just mark a line from corner to corner, diagonally. I guess you like to do a lot of measuring. But, basically, you've made a pretty good video.

    thanks

  • An easy way to find center of a square or rectangle is to draw a stright line from corner to corner. X mark dead center. Dan, I love what you guys put out there. Keep it up.

  • You guys rule. I love free DIY stuff. But one thing, "15 32nds"?? LOL!! hasn't America gotten sick of living in the steam age yet? I can't imagine how awkward, unwieldy and crap having to measure everything in imperial must be. I thought you won independence from the British! Move on USA, its the 21st century :-) Anyway thanks for filming all your hard work with your quaint Victorian English measurements and sharing it :-)

  • Plese buy a microphone.

  • I'm a bird in a hat.

    I've been around for centuries...

    ...You can tell.

  • Once when I was building a small house I was using my chop saw, it was an old one that was kind of broken, when I was not using it I would unplug it. Well I was interrupted by a neighbor & his 3 year old boy, the father & I was talking, when I happened to look over to the boy who had one of his hands grabbing the 10'' blade (it had no guard) & the other hand on the handle with his fingers on the switch. Needless to say I'm glad it was unplugged. It pays to take the extra time to be careful.

  • if i had a woman like that .... ill make a UFO...U THINK I JOKE?

  • It's probably easier to find the centers with an X made of two diagonal lines, from each corner to the opposite corner.

  • What a pimp. I love this guy.

  • can i use my ^@%#$#& as a push thing

  • Draw the lines corner to corner. That will always be in the center no matter how un-square. And others are right, a router, jig saw or band saw would be better.

  • gay

  • YO YA HABIA PENSADO EN UTILIZAR LA REPULCION DE IMANES PARA GENERAR EL MOVIMIENTO DEL SIGUEÑAL DEL MOTOR DE UN CARRO EN LUGAR DE LA EXLOSION POR CONBUSTIBLE, QUE EL SOGUEÑAL JIRE OR RESULCION MAGNETICA, ESTOY SEGURO QUE ESA TECNOLOGIA YA SE PUEDE DESARROLLAR AL MAXIMO.... Y DEJAR PARA SIEMPRE EL PETROLEO DONDE VA.. EN LAS FOSAS DE PETROLEO...

  • You can scribe a line from corner to corner with a straight edge which will give the exact center of a square or retangle

  • Hi Genie,

I had learned a great lesson from you to cut circular board.! You both are great partners....Singapore Jo

  • I like the fact that you still adhere to rules like waiting for the blades to stop completely before moving stuff around, as well as using push sticks. You set a good example.

  • nice trick on the table saw.

  • Denise, you are a BABE!

  • thank you so much for these free instructions, I cannot afford to buy plans, plus you have differant ways and types of windmills and solar. Just a cpl/ of things, PLEASE stop your table saw from wobbling!! also to find center of square just draw corner to corner and that IS center, Thanks again!! JL

  • i got a 1948 genartor off a ford will this work ?? anyone please answer thank you

  • It will work, spin it with a drill to check its power. Car generators and alternators require a lot of force when loaded but if your turbine is large enough and your wind is good, it should work.

  • @bobinmissouri you can buy a DC motor of ebay for 30 -50 bucks

  • there is no such thing as an absolute perfect circle :P

  • Damn asses, just use your router.

  • @WildGhorgh Routers are an option but this is MUCH faster especially on 3/4". Routers require many resets on 3/4". This works up to 3" deep material. I cut a 2x4 round table 36" dia in 10 minutes PT wood.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE I agree with WildGhorgh. You you can do this with your router table, which would put the axis of the motor perpendicular to the cutting load, so that the motor bearings can do their job.

  • @WildGhorgh router blade will wear out a hell of a lot faster than a table saw blade.

  • You should just run the center lines from the corners, it looked like you measured yours out.

  • Im following your plan, can I use a 220v 1060RPM mptor that came from a squirrel cage fan?

  • @Treefrogs2 Induction motors can work:-) but not a simple reverse, I misread your comment.:-)

  • @Treefrogs2 But you will never get an induction motor to speed with wind. DC permanent magnet motor as a generator or the best

    AXIAL FLUX GENERATOR.

  • Thanks Dan. Other than a treadnmill motor(where does one find that LOL) what machines likely would have decent DC motors for a decent beginning windmill project?

  • I keep expecting balloon boy to appear

  • @bernzeppi they took my idea. I was planning on getting some views from a balloon hoax;-)

    Oh well.

    LOL

  • It's too bad they had to destroy their dining room to make that thing.

  • Cuñado que hermosa tu hermana, presenta no?

  • Draw your lines corner to corner and you don't have to measure the centre points on the wood... Guaranteed center... Hope that helps... Great vid BTW, and great idea - I'll be doing this as soon as I've bought my house!!!

  • I allmost have the turbine built but am having a few mental blocks. 1) how did you mount it? did you use magnents? 2) where can I get info on a generator that would work good with this project?

This has been a very fun and eductional project for me and my boys--Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • great "science"

  • I'd still prefer doing this technique with a bandsaw. Bit safer.

  • wow there are a lot of whiners. THANKS FOR A GREAT VID.

this is something i hope to use in ZIMBABWE. thanks heaps you guys are great!!!!!!

  • You learn something every day!

  • Get some one with a cnc router and do that in 5 seconds

  • This is actually faster than most routers as they usually make a few passes. If I had a CnC Router, I would make a football shaped Turbine:-)

  • Man, what a great, and safe, technique for cutting a perfect circle.

    Excellent!

  • Thank you. If you do it right, you never come near the blade and can cut perfect circles out of 3/4" plywood in less than 2 minutes. Stay safe.

    Dan

  • On cutting your blades, you might try cutting to length first. Then glue caps on both ends. Then cut in half. The caps thus make a mounting flange

that you can simple screw to your plywood. that cuts out having to make all those mounting cuts at 30 degrees.

  • correction, 1 in 3 AMERICANS get cancer. that stat doesn't apply globally. some nations have much higher or lower rates (the type of cancer varies too, betcha don't know the most common type in america). anyways, you've failed to make a point. who cares how it happened, tell me how many people wind and solar have killed, gimme that number smart guy.

  • While he's making windmills, I'll be "entertaining" his wife.

  • i want to kiss his wife !

  • Love your vid's. I'll give u a tip, in regards to finding the center of rectangle or a square. Get a wool or cotton string, saturate it with colored chalk. Now hold both ends to opposite corners and make it tight, then lift the center of the line to make it tighter and let it snap back. Now repeat for the next diagonal and hey presto, the X you made now marks the exact center of you shape. Fast, easy and accurate and also a good way to mark long strait lines.

  • groovy idea. there are trees everywhere in my neighborhood so utilizing wind and solar power is going to be difficult. Its worth a try, and there is much room for improvement. Thanks for taking the time to come up with these great ideas to share with us. Blessed

  • Excellent Idea for circular wood cutting.

  • You still need to dig up toxic crap, transport it and re-bury it. How is that better than wind?

  • No I actually like and encourage the idea of building one yourself. Anyone can contact me for instructions on how to build a wind turbine, it's actually very easy even for a beginner.

  • I think you are doing exellent work, and your ideas are helping lots of people and the earth as well. Keep up the good work please!! I am interested in building the vertical turbine, I would like to know what kind of motor to use and how to connect it all.If you have some type of instructions I would love to have a copy.Again keep up the good work Please we need more people like you and your wife in this world!! We need a whole lot less non believers.

  • Dan, no guard on the table saw? If the plywood kicks back at you, it might be lights out for you and or your sweetie

  • How are you going to spin the plywood on the table saw with a guard in place?! Not sure what brand does that, but I'd like to see it. lol

  • Why the hell is there a add in Japanese that talks about learning English on the bottom of this video???

  • It is how youtube pays the bills.

  • you have so many videos that i just got lost, they are great videos allright, but i can not see them all. I am interested in the generator part. do you have a video in wich you explain that? thank you so much

  • Are you from Exxon or something StarWars3?

  • I have done a lot of research. I know what i am talking about. All wind is is a bird and bat killer. It requires a lot of oil to put the things up and the provide little power, the FLUCTUATES. It is absolutely pointless to build them. It takes 2+ days for a coal-fire power plant to start up its generating again, so what are you going to use when there is no wind. And the grid isnt designed for it. It is impossible. We would have to redesign the whole thing. Nuclear. Don't listen to propaganda.

  • While they may be less constant, in combination with Photo voltaic and recyclable lead batteries, they are a bloodless solution. The same can not be said for any of the processes that dig the earth and pollute the air.

  • I am against fossil fuels. I support nuclear, our grid supports nuclear. Again, solar is not going to work with our grid. I think there is a place for solar and wind, but our country run on the technology and the grid we use. I think in might work in Hawaii, so small, its own grid, not hard to redesign. Solar doesn't work at night, at still fluctuates throughout the day. We need more R&D before we start to use it. It can be great for private use, though. Like FedEx's building that has PV cells.

  • Ted Turner says that Nuclear is too risky from an insurance standpoint. The fact that it adds so much profit in a concentrated way is undesirable. "To big to fail" has proven to likely to be tempted to characteristics of cannibalistic Capitalism rather than Capitalists for Commitment to Excellence.

  • GOOD POINT!

  • By the way - nuclear is not clean @ ALL! AGAIN=some of the containers are leaking now, and they have no way to fix them! = who knows what the long term affect will be?! Check out the NWASTE FACILITY leak in upper Columbia river! Very VERY BAD THING!!! And that doesn't even speak of the cost/risk to run, build, maintain, just 1 plant! How is it not going to work on our grid?! That's foolish hyperboly. Think. If that was true.. you couldn't sell your overage back ON OUR GRID! I am an electrician.

  • i cant believe someone was stupid enough to give you a thumbs down on your (well informed) comment, whoever thinks nuclear is "clean", type "chernobyl" into google images... people seem to forget so easily that nuclear waste is DEADLY, GENETICALLY MUTILATING and moreover lasts THOUSANDS OF YEARS. go wind and solar! (and with major provisions in regards to wildlife hydro power too, yay green!)

  • what happened at chernobyl was a test gone wrong by the scientists that manned the facility. and guess what? 1 in 3 get cancer live with it.

  • Hanford was a military base used to produce nuclear fuel and weapons grade uranium/plutonium. It was managed by the military poorly and was designed with no thought of public safety or long term storage. The nuclear power plants today have moved largely to dry cask storage that have been proven to take a beating. The need for power is here. I would like more renewable energy used in the system, but right now our choice is mostly nuclear/coal. Ill take nuclear.

  • @DGFerro

won't have a choice in the next 25 years.

coal will fail us miserably unless people simply stop demanding so much and they won't.

  • do you realize that there is nearly 1000 years worth of coal left on the earth? its not that were going to run out anytime soon, its that it burns so dirty...

  • after the year 2030, it will not even matter to me because I'll be in a much better place.

    Peace be with you

  • maybe your expecting too much. they can work and work well. don't expect to push anything back to the grid. but to power some DC lights around the house and maybe even a stereo. they can work great. you can also collect enengy on a less than windy day. raise the windmill higher up the post the better the results. very simple. but to say they are a bad idea is silly.

  • It seems that you need to do alot more research. If thousands of people made these for their own use look how much green power would be used and how much it would save on the big picture, you can also make your own solar cells for when the wind isnt blowing.People like you with negitive thinking never would better themselves or the world and you try to keep it from getting any better.I know windmills and solar and hydrogen cells do work!! so before putting people down do some more research!!!!!!!

  • Wow. I have. But here are the facts. Wind and solar dont work on an industrial scale or for private use. It can save you money but if everyone does it, the power plants will increase there rates and it is back to square one. Why? Because wind and solar fluctuates. So they need backup 100% of the time. And when you do get power, it just puts a power plant on standby. Do some research. Where you going to get your power wind the wind isn't blowing. It is coal. Nuclear is the only clean option.

  • No one should rely on just wind power, when the wind dont blow which is not to often you go to back up plan B which is solar cells.Tell me how many days when there is no wind or no sun?The world ususally has one or the other.I dont rely on just one thing to help me,even though just one does help with the electric bill. This forum is to make something yourself that will help you and the world at the same time.

  • Sounds like you are thinking that electric utilities are unregulated capitalists... they have been fully supported and have many exclusive rights... the thing that made David Kucinich so popular among his constitutes is the fact that he kept the electric utilities from going private, where they would rap the public... So utilities do not have the right to rap the public.

Next... Check out Mike Strizki and others who have gone completely off grid and live with energy to spare for home and auto.

  • EXACTLY!

  • Nuclear CLEAN?! YOU ARE A MORON. You really don't know wtf your talking about. THE CONTAINERS LEAK, THEY HAVE POLUTED WATERWAYS & WATERSHEDS= LIKE THE UPPER Columbia river!!!!!! And do you really think that arbitrary behavior by the PWR plants is any kind of reason to not change the world FOR THE BETTER? I believe when that rate hike becomes higher because of independant energy, the people/gov will regulate and soften the blow. Imagine the public outcry of all the ways thats wrong!

  • Look Mr "no we can't"! Industrial is totally possIble, in near future if not already! With step up transformers etc.. 2 bad no 1 has put the years or long thought to it! till nowadays.Matter of fact I just remembered somewhere in europe they run a factory on it! Fool. Wind & sun fluctuate?!Yea SO WHAT! Your batteries are a back up system in themselves! & you can add more! Besides even if we got 1/5 of our energy the clean way, that would cause MANY positive effects- ACROSS THE BOARD! so STFU!

  • I have done a lot of research on solar and wind. I even have a website. The fact is that the energy you get from solar and wind fluctuates. This means you need backup. You don't understand how the grid and how the power plants work. Because solar and wind need 100% backup, a coal power plant is going to be on standby when wind/solar does generate energy. When it stops, it comes online. When a power plant is on standby, it burns fuel but does not generate power.

  • WHATEVER. The facts speak for themselves. Toxic nuclear waste, stored for 1000- ? years, in leaky containers. The original argument (if your 45 like me you might remember) was that technology was supposed to cure the problem of the waste. WE NOW KNOW that is

  • just get a rotozip. much easier

  • you two are very good on camera!

  • Very good idea provided you have the wind to turn the vawt. What would you use to generate the electricity? DC generator, geared alternator? Keep the videos coming

    DS

  • Never learned this trick in wood-shop! COOL STUFF!

  • Thought you or your viewers migh enjoy some origami wind art.

I've created an wind turbine (of sorts) created from folded paper. It powers an Aeolian Shadow shifter. Follow the link to Firstfold to see this in action.

  • Most excellent video guys! 5*

  • DAN WIFE"S HOT! someone had to say it.

  • agreed!lol

  • Thankyou

  • Hey! Leave my wife out of this

  • lol

  • @komanoise I was just about to say it also and I wondered who said it before - I knew someone did , I agree - with all due respect to science ,alternative forms of energy , Propulsion systems of the future and force of green technology that requires a comment , yes – Denise is HOT !

  • and yes, your circle-cut-on-table-saw is a damn good idea. I can't wait to win a bet with it sometime!

  • Funny "X"

You should have drawn your lines from the corners.

  • your wife is awesome. What is your day job dan? You're an eclectic guy.

  • why is everyone bashing them on wood cutting techniques and proper tool control....THESE PEOPLE ARE GIVING YOU FREE ENERGY PLANS....omg...you want a tutorial on tools go to home depot and buy a book. The purpose behind the clip is to show you how to tap into a free energy source.

  • Thank you for the comment:-) We actually do tons of wood work for a living and have routers rotozips etc and nothing cuts a circle like this. I have used other tools in the past and while they do work, you cannot knock out a bunch quickly. Cutting circles is actually a neat way of making money, turns a $15 sheet of plywood into $75 in under 15 minute:-)$

    Thanks again for the comment.

  • There is no HQ option

  • I dig the graphic over Dan's face, funny, Denise is numero ono;-)

Great video by the way, you guys are a trip.

  • Seeming you are "rough" cutting the squares a hand held circular saw with a fence guide will do the trick safely... cutting circles can be done with a router.(using a trammel jig)

  • Sorry if this sounds like a beat up, its not Im concerned when people demonstrate bad powertool habits to others who dont know better

Rip cutting up sheet goods like into your squares without using a rip fence is asking for a kickback... especially on a saw that wobbles/moves like yours. A kickback of this kind has a good chance of being lethal.

Excellent video otherwise, entertaining and for a good cause. Thankyou

  • wow guys you guys are the best! i just love wind turbines and your videos! cheers DeanC993

  • hurry!! we can't do this all day!!! lol

  • :-) SHAMWOW LOL

  • LOL!

  • Super cutting tip. 5++

    You always have great videos.

    -Pete

  • LOL, nice! Stick your rating bubble over his head. You tell him . Thanks again

  • Hi Dan! A super trivial way of getting exact center is to draw a line from the upper-lefthand corner to the lower right-hand corner, and another line from the upper-righthand corner to the lower-lefthand corner. This creates an "X", and where the two lines intersect, that's the center of the wood.

This only works with rectangular-cut wood, though, note that it does not need to be a perfect square. Any rectilinear shape will do.

  • Neat idea !

  • Thanks alot for vid Dan; I still can't figure out how you got that beautiful wife. Tell me the secret. lol keep posting!

  • Awsome video Dan and Wife! LOL! You guys are awsome!!!!!!! 5 stars! You too are such a cute couple I swear. I also caught the whole "20 inches thing" The wife laughs and says "I wish! LOL! I spit my coffee all over my keyboard with that one. That was damn funny. I love you guys! Keep the videos coming. Denise is absolutely beautiful Dan and you sir are one lucky man. peace out you two.

  • That is some sure work. I told my friend who builds furniture for a living. Custom stuff, perfectionist, about the circle from the other video. He said it was not possible, I just showed him this and he thinks you are a genie. This guy is not impressed by much when it comes to woodwork, not a computer guy so youtube is new to him but he thanks you for the idea. He could not believe how simple this is. Ditching his bansaw.

  • Finding the perfect center is easy. You just put a string across both diagonals and the center of both strings is the center of your square.

  • These are great videos. Denise is funny. She makes me laugh. Keep up the great work.

  • Fantastic information! Thanks for posting :)

  • You guys are my heroes.

  • I have done the same thing to my table saw for the same reason! We do wat we have to to build what we need right! My reason behind it was for table tops but now I have a new project thanks to both of you!

  • :-) It works great, what is the thickest wood you have cut. We did a 2" thick block.

  • As I recall it was a 2 1/2 inch thick piece of rough cut lumber at a 3 foot radius.

  • Good stuff! Looking forward to part 2

  • Great tricks!!! Thanks for sharing

  • *****

  • nice to see you working as a team

  • Great work, i like easy tricks.

    well done.

    regards
