  • I have been using this as my last song of the night for most of my Record Hops sinci it came out. I had to find a re-issue on Red Scepter so I could put my Pink copy away. It was also very popular here in the Boston area. Are the white Scepter lables Promo copies for DJ's? I have never seen white at the retail level.

  • YEP,

    THE" DANCE IS OVER"!!!

    TOO BAD!!

  • love it, Doris was always my favorite Shirelle...

  • LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!

THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY , WELL ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!

IT SURE IS UP AT THE TOP OF MY FAVORITES!

    I JUST LOVE THIS SONG!

    THANKS PJ!!

  • Beautiful record PJ!

  • Hi, PJ. I screwed up.I must be getting old. LOL I just checked,it`s on the PINK Scepter label. I have DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE on the white label. Both records are brand new.It was (is?) considered a classic oldie in Philadelphia. There were about 10 local radio DJ`s working clubs and school dances in the 60`s through the 80`s, not only Jerry Blavat and Hy Lit but loads of other guys and about half of them used it as their closing theme.

  • That makes sense. I have seen this on pink. It doesn't show up all that often

  • I have a stone MINT copy of this on the white Scepter label I paid dearly for many, many years ago. Last song at many school dances in the 60`s in the Philadelphia area. Great to hear it on youtube scratches and all!

  • I never knew this was on a white label copy. Must be quite rare. The popularity in Philly explains how Billy and The Essentials got their hands on it

  • Once again, PJ, Thanks for the rich memories, the laughter and the tears.

The Shirelles, my favorite female group of ALL-TIME and the best female group of the 50's and 60's. They never put out a bad record.

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs, I found it on Itunes but it doesn't have the awesome vocal bit at the end

  • I never heard the copy on Itunes. It's a shame they edited it

  • @PJDooWop I knowwwww! i was sat there waiting for it and... nothing.

  • This song reminds me of 1966--- prom night! "The Dance is over"

    I LOVE,LOVE this song!!

    I have this song

    Thanks to YOU!

    Thanks pj

    cynthia

  • Thanks for your reply! Barry!

Thanks for the information about the movies, I much rather just stay into the music

    But thanks

    Take care

    Cynthia

  • I love this song PJ, I just can't stay away from your page!!

But this really is one of the BEST!!!

Thanks so much for finding this & posting this so I can have just a part of it!!

    Thanks again

    Cynthia

  • This is for my Joey Bear. In 1963 we danced at St. Camilius Church dance to Kathy Young's "A Thousand Stars in the Sky." When the dance was over and we went our separate ways, I went to look for you soon thereafter and found you dancing with a blond headed girl and I left . But just so you know that I did look and as it turned out my bear, you'd be the only man to dance a slow dance with me in my lifetime.

  • Don't tell me Patti LaBelle & the BlueBelles were not taking notes on this one - I am sure this inspired them greatly. Great job from a singer's singer - Doris ("Dedicated") Kenner-Jackson - the Shirelles' other lead singer!

  • So glad you found this song PJ,

You know this is a favorite!! Right?

    Thanks for posting

    Cynthia

  • fab song you are great picking everthing i like

  • If you don't care for the violins, listen to Billy and the Essentials version.

  • NO MATTER the song, I still go back to this song!!

    Fantastic,

Well this is still a BIG favorite of mine! Always will be

    Thanks PJ

    Cynthia

  • Thanks PJDOOWOP

    For all these wonderful songs!

    GREAT MEMORIES!

  • O LORD, what a song!

I love this and it sure brings out the memories!!

  • great!-- except that its another example where violins which soften it too much...as a purist i don't think ive ever heard a doowop that was improved by adding violins, only removing them :)

  • I agree, but there are some exceptions.. Stardust by The Dominoes, Come Back To These Arms by Vic Marcel and The Four Bars and I Wished On A Star by The Pentagons are a few exceptions that I can think of

  • This was one Shirelles song I had never heard before. It is great! Thanks for posting.

  • I completely forgot The Shirelles recorded this. Love this version Thanks!

  • I love everything you post!

  • Thank you so much :)

  • I love this song. I searched many years for this record and found it a few years ago at the R&B record shop in Upper Darby, PA right outside of Philly. Jerry Blavat "The Geator with the Heator" used to play this all the time as part of his B sides. Thank God for DJs flipping and thank you for the post.

  • @comingout05 was it Val Shively's? They got it all!

  • @BigAssPain

yes it was. I agree they've got it all. I am always amazed and overwhelmed when I go to the store. If I only know the chorus or just a few words of the song, amazingly they always know what song it is and have it.

  • I'm glad someone mentioned that it was Doris on lead. Thanks!

  • Looks like this was supposed to be the A-side (see the A to the right of the record number?) but then DJ's started flipping it over to make for another hit B-side.

  • Back in the 50's and early 60's, we ended up with the b side becoming the hit side a lot. Sometimes when the b-side became a hit, the label had to pay royalties to a writer they never intended on paying (or buying off). Also, there was a thing called a "split hit", where both sides were hits in different cities. A split hit was good if both songs were national hits simultaneously or sequentially. However, if the hit was split between different regions, this wasn't always a good thing...

  • ... (continued).. One of the main reasons that a regionally split hit was bad for a record company was that if one side was a hit in one part of the country and the other side was a hit somewhere else, neither side was actually a national hit. That regional hit competed with something else that could have been a national hit for them.Labels basically wanted all or nothing.. What labels ended up doing down the road was making one sided promos or pressing promos with the same song on both sides.

  • Great post PJ-this was a Blue Light Basement and CYO dance classic from back in the day,Also love "Blue Holiday" and "Thing of the Past"! I know the Chantels were first but the Shirelles killed back then with hit"A" sides and great "B"sides.Have a merry

  • At this still early part of their career, the level of sophistication on this is amazing! Listen to the phrasing at 1:38 to 1:45 and the word "a-gain". Terrific track, P.J!

  • They were great right from the beginning. The Shirelles had other great ballads too, like A Tear Fell

  • WOW, what a beautiful song.Thank you.

  • You're welcome

  • NICE!

  • Thank you

  • Glad you liked it PJ. Its a great thing you are doing, putting up the rare tunes....Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • It's hard not to hear the influence of Arlene Smith & the Chantels on this one, but then lots of girl groups were influenced by the Chantels.

  • This is true Mike

  • Oh My God---check YouTube for Climb Every Mountain" by the Victorians, you will love the great version of this tune....^-^

  • I did... Thank you for the suggestion. It's a good song

  • Ive fallen in love with this girl groups doowop sound the past few days at the office. somehow stumbled upon this while going through some Shirelles stuff here. I dont know if its rare or not, but its a pleasurable song and I wanted to post a thanks because of it. so THANK YOU!

  • The record itself isn't rare, but the song is quite often overlooked. It's a flip side that I think should have been released seperately as it's own A side

  • do you have "Climb Every Mountain" by the Victorians?? So gorgeous.....^-^

  • Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with that one

  • This is a great track PJ...however my friend has a song with the same title by Bettye swann is it the same song?...although they do sound different!!

will see if she will upload it anyhow so you can hear it yourself or have you already?...Sarah x btw didn't realise that you were only 28!!...what knowledge you have of this music!

  • Yes, I'm 28. Thank you for the kind words. I have not heard the Bettye Swann song. I'd love to hear it. It would be great if she can upload it, thank you.

  • 28? PJ, how in the world did you find your way into this kind of music? Wow, I didn't know you were that young, God Bless ya, you got some real nice 45s! Did allsoul61 ever send you Bettye Swann's version? I have it if you want it. Actually I have 5 other versions if you want them.

  • Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I'll be 29 in November. Collecting records has largely been my life's work. I was not aware of Bettye Swann's version. I only knew of this and Billy and The Essentials versions. Yes, I'd love to hear the others

  • PJ send me a private message with your email & I'll send them!

  • So, so, soulful....

  • Since Jennifer Giordano threw all them low light "Makeout Party's" back in `64 -`66...I've been living for the day when I get the chance to sloooow dance to this song with ~~~~ Linda Palmeri

  • I believe the Shirelles had better romantic songs than the Supremes..They just did not get the publicity that MOTOWN RECORDS did for the Supremes..thanks for the clip

  • Diana Ross and the Supremes never made my favorite girls group list...give me the Hearts, The Crystals, Chantels...

  • nice! im right there with ..doctor of hearts!

  • This is very Cool.

  • Luther Dixon was one hip cat!

  • I agree... He was a prolific lyricist and did some damn good stuff

  • Also...not for nothing...but...it's been a secret wish of mine for well-nigh twenty years to see, now get this, to see Madonna do an album or CD of Shirelles classics! Could any of you Doo-Woppers imagine that?!!! If she did it with the best of intentions I bet she'd win over many a 55+ fan! ~ GREAT POST PJDooWop

  • For my money The Shirelles were the greatest of the "Girl Groups" and that even includes The Supremes w/ Diana Ross. I remember forty plus years ago cherry-picking the album, that "TDIO" was on, from a record rack in a Rayco auto seatcover store. I still have it. It's magical how the sight of a 45rpm record can evoke so many memories. I NEVER thought I'd see this song, however, on YOUTUBE!

  • It's a great 45.. I also have this on the first pressing pink label but it's not in great shape.

  • I always liked the Shirelles and this has to be one of their best songs!Great job,PJ!

  • great doris kenner-coley lead. RIP

  • @lajas46 yes indeed...

  • u did it again!!!!!! beautiful song

  • sorry but this was not to my liking or my cup of tea but thanks for sending it my way

  • Great group and a lovely song thanks

  • Beautiful tune!

  • Great one. Boy u got the tunes of a life time, johnnie ! Thank you for sharing

  • Oldie Goldie,.ktf.

  • Wonderfull Song!

  • LOVE this song, thanks for posting!!!

  • You're welcome

  • some out of a movie music....

  • So beautiful - thanku PjDooWop!

  • Thank you... Joe from Bayonne is the one that needs to be thanked. He requested the song.. I honestly forgot all about it.

  • Thanku also to "Joe from Bayonne" much appreciated :)

  • It's been so many years since I heard this song. Thanks a million for getting on for me.

I'm glad others have also enjoyed it.

    Bayonne Joe

  • Interesting note.. As you said, this record was a b-side of one of their hits. I just noticed by looking at the label that The Dance Is Over was actually released as The A-side. The other side, Tonight's The Night, was the hit. This wasn't so uncommon.. Coney Island Baby by The Excellents is another 45 that the intended hit side became the "b" side.

  • Stunning,absolutely stunning.

  • I agree.... haunting chord structure

  • Songs like this always send a tingle down my spine.Doo Wop at its finest.

  • BRILL LOVE IT KTF

  • Thank you... You got some brilliant stuff too. That Barini Brothers record you just posted blew my mind away. Wow!
