Tom Joad was a character in novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Tom was a migrant worker which is what the song was about: migrant workers. The last verse is basically a quote from Tom in the movie. Migrant workers are still around today, but the book refers to those in the depression. They were some of the worst off of the depression. Also @Muggadoogy, you have Hitler to thank more than FDR. His New Deal was largely unsuccessful in fixing the economy. It was actually WW2 that fixed it.
History does repeat itself. This video is excellent- as is the song. This applies to the crash of 1929 AND the crash of September 2008. We need to go back to the values and integrity that BUILT this Country. I believe, IMHO, that this song echoes this sentiment. Simply, give, love, show compassion.... bring back Humanity . "Waiting on the Ghost of Tom Joad". The world is waiting..... LDK
@YachiruXx Great song, its been my favorite for years! That said and with all do respect ITS NOT ABOUT the great depression... Its about the future economic collapse caused by the new world order. Its quite prophetic actually.. The first lyric says it all! In 1933 there were NO highway patrol choppers, or highways for that matter.. Boss wrote this song in 95' and its coming true sooner than we wish. Its why RATM chose to cover it.. Its a 1984 style prophecy. But great choice though.. Love it
My grandparents lived through the depression with 8 kids. When they moved around, they would take their shanty house apart nail by nail and rebuild in another town..can't imagine...Grandpa ended up in Pa and Oh and worked in coal mines and made glue in his garage. Grandma made all their clothes and canned. I never met them but I've heard all the stories. My Dad had to write the Governer when he was 12 to get a drivers license and they issued him a special permit. Hard times indeed...
I had to register in Youtube just to be able to comment on this. This song is one of the most powerful songs ever, especially if you've read The Grapes of Wrath. And this video is brilliant, it follows the spirit of the song! Simply brilliant.
GREAT TUNE....GREAT VIDEO.....SPRINGSTEEN, DYLAN, GUTHRIE, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT LIFE/JUSTICE/TRUTH THAN ALL THE TALK RADIO/POLITICIANS/CAPITALISTS/"EXPERTS"/CORPORATE MEDIA/ETC ETC TAKEN TOGETHER...................THEY ARE PROPHETS!
I was looking for "Have you seen the ghost of Tom? Long white bones with the flesh all gone. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?".
@MyRhinoDrankTheJ00ce That's called "Have you seen the ghost of Tom" (sometimes John) but it's a children's song so I don't know if there's an official/professional version of it anywhere. Hope this helped and you find it!
I'm the next generation after the Depression. My parents, aunt and uncles lived through it. Thanks to a Union job my father and family were able to have a steadily rising standard of living. Everyone I knew had quality of life because of FDR. I had the kind of life you see in the old TV shows-- Mom home, dad working, family together. My brother was a Marine, I was a Sailor in Vietnam. Thank you. I know how much work it took to assemble this.

I enjoyed your clip so much, and love this song by Bruce.
The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the best book I have ever read.
Reading it now for the second time, and it won't be the last.

Grapes of Wrath is one of my favourite books. I love this song, although I've always heard the Rage Against the Machine cover. This one is good, too.
