what joey says is true. im no longer classed as a newbie, im taking landscapes shots thats matching up to the pro's. well sometimes:) i still use a cannon 1000D and pentax k super. but i have invested in some good lenses and filters. how many people have you seen with lenses the size of rocket launchers and camera stuck on auto lol if your not gona listen to what a pro like joey says, you might as well just buy a compact or a phone with built in camera
people hate on joey, saying he's an arrogant, condescending douche. maybe the arrogant one is YOU, YOU people that just can't stand the fact that he's so good & sure of his talent/craft. YOU people are a part of "THAT" class of idiot people in the world that feel like they're being talked down to every time they receive instructions by people that are superior in skill. Well newsflash, Joey IS superior to you, that's why you watched his DVD.
He's doing you guys a favor and telling you guys what not to do, what to watch out for, what worked from his experience, etc. Of course it sounds condescending. He's making sure you get what he's trying to tell you. Why don't you arrogant people drop your egos for a second and really absorb what he's saying. And if he didn't gloat a little about his big clients and achievements, you idiots wouldn't listen. And when he does mention achievements, you guys call him arrogant. Come on, gtfo here.
To those who hate on Joey for "being a condescending douche", maybe he's trying to convey his success while emphasizing the lack of need for fancy equipment. DUH. so obvious. YOU PEOPLE are just hating just to hate, trying to pick at things and taking them out of context just to find imperfection among perfection. Rather than appreciating good things, YOU people look for the clouds. Also, it's a tutorial, he's one of the best, of course he's sure of his craft. Why don't you people stop whining?
It's funny how people hate on Joey for being so good at his craft, saying dumb sh*t like "oh if he only had this this & that, he'd be lost". That's like saying the world's best tennis player would be lost if he only had a tree branch for a racket. STFU and stop hating. If you can't produce better shots, then learn how to, rather than trying to tear others' great achievements down to your level just so you feel better about your lack of achievement. At the end of the day, he produces winning art
This is exactly what I want to accomplish in my life. I just bought a camera that cost me a fortune and I want to be successful like this guy. I think to be a photographer is the best job on the planet!!! I can't wait to see where it takes me. I want to explore the world as a photographer!! : )
artwork? sorry, shooting images for twilight ads and documentry photography is not considered artwork. get real. Go shoot some more tampon commercials, nothing you do is artwork.
the guy may be good at what he does, business and commercial photo.... but he looks and acts like a goofy ass douche.
@bglasss Dude... have you not seen his Personal work? Go buy his Faces of a Vanishing World DVD and get ready to have your mind freaking blown!! Do research before you call one of the best photographers in the world a "goofy ass douche"
@EvanSimpkins His work is exceptional.. his attitude is not. Just because he is what you consider "one of the best photographers" does not mean he isnt a douche. I couldn't stand watching his DVD's he acted so full of himself every single second. Id much rather look up to humble photographers like Zack Arias or Strobist that are confident in their abilities but dont act like superheros.
@bglasss I have watched these DVD's and I completely agree. While he is able to take some amazing photographs that look beautiful. I feel that his attitude throughout the whole DVD was condecending and "douchey". Although his photos are inspiring, this is the type of photographer I hope never to be.
He spent most of the DVD telling us how many famous people he had shot and how many places he had been and didn't teach me much at all apart from how not to act. Id rather look up to humble photogs.
He says, "More equipment won't make you a better photographer". The next shot was a photo shoot with lights, softboxes, reflectors, etc. Joey - it might not make one a better photographer, but it sure as hell helps. Otherwise all your work would be done with a cheap SLR and on-camera flash.
@dima9944 He is more referring to the fact that you don't need to buy $1000+ professional lights in order to get photos like he does. You need to know the equipment you have. You can always MAKE a softbox out of a bedsheet. So many photographers think "I can NOT produce images as good as he did because I don't have the same quality equipment as he does" and that is not true at all. If you know your equipment, you can create amazing stuff.
Purist some times have a hard time grasping the simple fact that for as long as there has been photography , photographers where manipulating images in the darkroom to modify or inhance the image beyond its initial exposue. They sandwiched negatives to create montages, they dodged and burned to correct exposure. They tweeked the chemicals to create different texures. The last true purist professional photographer died off in the 1850s.
I don't get the "SOOC vs Photoshop" argument. Apples and oranges my friends. Do you "purists" not think Ansel Adams is a real photographer? He spent more time in the dark room doing post production with his prints than he did exposing his plates or film. He manipulated how his images turned out just as any PS artist might. Using graduated, polarizing, ND, coloured filters, or even gels on artificial lights isn't manipulating the image? Pre or post production .... it's all the same.
@KEBokeh the technique and composition are the work of ar, though not innovative for a profi but is great but frankly 99% of upcoming photographers should not use photoshop.half of his work looks heavily processed and he tends to use that dodge tool a little too much for my taste.
Youtube has lots of videos on creating different looks and the use of basic tools. but if i were you i would buy the adobe photoshop manuel from adobe and get to reading. Then look up creative ways to use those tools as you come across them. that way you can use many tools many different ways and make any photo look just how you want it.
Photoshop is the digital darkroom now and we can do more than just dodge and burn. As the tools evolve so does the art.
Sometimes it's nice to take unmodified images of the world, but using your creativity to create an image that is not representative of what was really shot is just a natural evolution in the process of artistic expression in photography. It may not be your thing if you're a purist (and that's a valid opinion), but that doesn't make it less of an art.
@rustycageandrun So you don't have the photoshop skills, and cover it up by calling yourself a purist. Ok.
I admittedly suck at photoshop other than minor adjustments, but I don't degrade others work by saying it's not even art. How is it not a photograph? A photograph is created when the light hits the sensor and creates the image(or in a raw file, creates the data). If you want to be a pro you need photoshop skills. You can't just tell your clients "omg I only shoot SOOCS!!"
Hi, Michael, first don't put words in my mouth I never pronounced. I never said it wasn't art, see my comment below about it. I happen to work as a staffer in a few magazines (real magazines, not local comic sans/pixelated magazines) and we use heavy photoshop. When it comes to MY work (not personal work, let me clarify) I try to make the photograph, well you know... in the camera. I don't allow myself to upgrade the image using PS, *let me continue in another post
The post process they will apply after I send the image is up to them, they will listen to my input and that's it and sometimes I do it myself. I work at a car magazine, and if you know a little bit about car photography first thing you realize is the crazy amount of work those types of images need. My whole point is to try your best to make it look great when you shoot, if not, don't call yourself a photographer, maybe a great digital artist.
@rustycageandrun I agree that you should do your best in camera, but photoshop is also a great creative tool that people often ignore just so that they can call their photos "sooc". Photoshop isn't an image fixer, but it is an image enhancer. You can do some amazing stuff with it. JoeyL doesn't neglect the photo taking side of it either, he starts with great lighting and unusual compositions. A photographer is someone who professionally makes their income taking photographs. JoeyL does that.
@michaelh6 He recommended doing your best in camera to help the person your taking a photo of see the result without using their imagination. He explains how on photoshoot if you can show the person a close to final result on the back of the camera, it gets them more excited and they end up taking better photos after seeing it instantly. Photoshop is awesome, but don't ignore what your camera can do and tell your self you'll photoshop it later. To become a better photographer, learn your gear.
@rustycageandrun Yes you did lmao, read your own comments: "maybe it's still art, but it stops being a photograph, that's what we "purists" would like people to understand."
I know you never said it wasn't art, you said it wasn't a photograph. I'm saying how is it not a photograph? Sounds pretty snobby to me.
But I have a deep deep hate for Photoshoped pictures... in a sense that people don't understand that the picture they see in a magazine is not "really" the picture that was taken.
I am only 17 and learning, but I already feel most of my work or criticism lying behind Photoshop, I will explicitly separate my RAW work from my Edited work as much as I can.
Well i dont want to offend you but, honestly i think that when you are making a picture, which includes post production what you are doing is creating YOUR artistic impression of what you saw, and what made you want to take the photo in the first place, not making a duplicate of what was in front of you, which requires little skill or creative thinking. And that would defeat the purpose of photography being that it is an art.
Because if you think i was talking about joey i wasnt, i was just talking to that person who seems to think that a photograph has to be a simple snapshot of whats in front of you, which is tremendously easy, theres no question about that. So if you were offended because you thought i was talking about joey, dont be.. hes actually my favorite photographer :)
Not really, I respect him, I have his DVD's, but his photoshop-oriented style is not my favorite, I was referring to your comment that a photograph requires very little skill, or like you just said: "is tremendously easy", I work in photography, and it's nothing close to easy, that's an understatement.
what joey says is true. im no longer classed as a newbie, im taking landscapes shots thats matching up to the pro's. well sometimes:) i still use a cannon 1000D and pentax k super. but i have invested in some good lenses and filters. how many people have you seen with lenses the size of rocket launchers and camera stuck on auto lol if your not gona listen to what a pro like joey says, you might as well just buy a compact or a phone with built in camera

I 'ma dodge and burn your face in style
Leave you damaged like (...) file (?)
Softbox light is versitile
(...) response can take a while.
Bare bulb gives a gradient effect
The beauty dish reflects and rejects
Add a grid if the light is indirect
So your light is perfect.

add a grid if the light is indirect
so your light is perfect

No, but recreating your artistic impress of what you saw with 1 click is more of what I believe in.
I understand post production is a big part of photography nowadays, but it is too obvious when things have been photoshopped and whatnot.
Some pictures can totally be out of this world and physics defying, and the artist is still called a photographer... I don't see how that works.
