Jeff left his mark not only with his music- not just his one completed album, but his unfinished work and his live performances - but also by the type of compassionate, caring person he was, by the way he affected so many people whom he met and who observed him at his performances.
Can't understand why Sketches has received a lukewarm press, comparing it unfavorably to Grace. True, Jeff never finished these songs, and one can argue the 2nd disc shouldn't have been included. But, what we have is quite impressive!
Anyone with bipolar could watch his interviews and read what friends have said and see it. If he even he told people he had it why wouldn't people believe him? A person with bipolar feels what everyone else does, just stronger, deeper and for a longer amount of time. The highs can cause accidental deaths by way of wrecklessness. Mood swings, up and down, two different "personalities" Surrounded by shame, it goes undiagnosed and lethal accidents "just happen." Oh yeah..it's hereditary..
I suppose my morbid curiosity has gotten the best of me, meanwhile Jeff's voice resonating in my head hypnotising me to ask the question "How did he really die?". Everyone has known about his drowning in the Mississippi River, but has anyone really looked any further into his passing? The facts truly point to innocence and greed, truth and lies, love and hate, angels and the devils who kill them.
The Buckley's story is so tragic... first dad Tim in 1975, Then Jeff himself in '97. Both left way too young; at least Tim left us several albums- Jeff barely had time to even make a mark, yet he did with just one record.
@lordsardonicvids Well he left just one record, but he also left a lot, and I mean a lot of demos, that give us at least 8 or 9 cd's of his own. It took me ages to collect them.
I wonder why he went to swim in that river, by night, without even took out his boots?
@jay33jay It's sad he did that. I think he was on to one of the greatest albums of all time had he finished it. It would have made Grace look like just a preview. But the same thing that compelled him to take that swim was the same thing that drove his music, his love for the moment. On one level it was just foolish and rash, but on another it was the way he lived every moment of his life.
@jay33jay 2 "I wonder why he went to swim in that river, by night, without even took out his boots?" me either... it's just strange :\ wish we could go back in time and warn Jeff to take is boots off or not to go swimming to far... : ( he was such a loss....
@jay33jay I was wondering the same thing. And the fact that Jeff could sing like 30 seconds without taking his breath, drowning sounds suspicious and ironic!
from what i understand of him from listening to his music, swimming fully clothed in the river at night was exactly the sort of thing jeff buckley would do.
I love this song so much but i have a question. He hadn't recorded this song but how did this track get made? Is that mick, michael, and matt in the background or no?
Jeff has the no peer, no equal. Every time I listen to his songs, no matter how often I have heard them before, the man connects with me like no other artist!
I'm not sure about here the recorded Sketches, I know the song were ready, but he used to record a lot of songs in his home studio. Those tapes exist and from time to time Sony "give" us a new song from those tapes.
He said he doesn't care about being remembered.....just remember the music...remember his ART...live a life full of experience, in the current moment NOW....and each of us be true to ourselves and each other
@carlito I feel ya, no diss man, but I think if all the people who really dig Buckley could do it they would don't you?
What I mean bro maybe he did that very thing for the people that you say freedom from the earthly chains that we are doomed to carry everyday. @ least he did alot for me in lightening the load.
jeez im sure hed be flattered by all these people thinkin hes like jesus, but Im sure hed want you all to do your own thing and free yourself from the chains that are "following someone else". Make your own damn prophercies!
Well done Jay Jay, tks for posting. Liner notes for "Sketches" quote producer Tom Verlaine saying he thought it could be released as is. Jeff, the perfectionist, wanted to make it better. Can"t imagine what he would have changed, because I love it, as is, myself. Saw Jeff and band at the Cup Of Joe in Raleigh NC just after "Grace" was released. I still can't explain what an AMAZING, UNBELEIVABLE, EXTRAORDINARY show that was. Never seen anyone like him. Never will again.
I never talked to anyone that actually saw and heard Jeff playing. It is you the 1st person who saw him alive, just confirming that the guy did his music in an amazing way. Tkx for that!
jay!!!! awesome!!! amazing video, amazing shots, amazing! wonderful way to characterize new years prayer, just being you, no strings attached...amazing, Jeff buckley xever!!!
did you guys know that this is brad pitt's favorite song? i read that angie gave him an awesome bike and she wrote "my sweetheart, the drunk" on it with her own hands :-)
I love this whole album. He said he wanted to write it as though he'd never relased "Grace", as though he was a new artist and no-one could expect any certain things of him.
Ian Moore experimented with a sound similar to this on his "And All the Colors" CD...and STP sort of experimented w/ a sound similar w/ their CD, "No 4" song is: "No way out" -Sting also experimented with this sound. I believe this is called "world music" -but it's awesome and I'm glad you posted this...I had to have this song off iTunes. Jeff Buckley was just amazing!
This song is so different from the usual Buckley sound, I think he was looking for new beats, like growing in new sounds, this is part of his unfinished album.
Maybe try "Repentance" by Dream Theater (although its not all instrumental) and try "Bankok" by Steve Vai, instrumental and very Middle Eastern sounding vibes... You might also like "All about Eve" by Steve Vai
one can be affraid of the resembling of him and me, never the same fate has grown into two persons, but everything has its first time.. hope in every of his pains i can feel mine!
thanks for posting this. I first heard Jeff Buckley in '95 when Grace came out and thought he had a remarkable voice. I was saddened when he died and still am. Just think of what wonderful work he could have done!
!st time I heard Grace I found it dull, but my father heard him so much, that I started to enjoy. Only some years later I really study Jeff work. He died young, but he did a great work. So he remains the mystery white boy forever
My God... As an Elvis fan (so what? ) I must say that this guy was reaaly really something. So shame that he left us early, God Bless his soul and I hope we lives on forever.
This song, although odd, with a dreamlike, druggie quality, is very uplifting for those of us oddball outcasts, the misfits of society. -,_,- It just fills you with a calm peace when you listen to it.... ahhhhh.... That's the kind of song to paint to!
