  • CLUTCH... My HDD just died on my 2 yr old Panasonic. Wont read. Looks like I'm just going to give this a shot. You can hear the old HDD clicking away so its shot. Thanks

  • can you also upgrade hard drive on a sonydcr-sr68 80gb camcorder ????

  • Hi, You have a great video there!

    I would like to know if a "1.8" 240GB TOSHIBA MK2431GAH HDD1905" can be installed into a JVC GZ-HD7U (stock 60gb)?

    Thanks!

  • thanks you really help me

  • Does anyone know how to replace thebuilt in flash on a sony hdr-sr12?

  • You need precise soldering skills or a friend that's good at it, to upgrade. Same goes for any other internal flash device. Check specs before buying, buyer beware. SSD or Hard Disk cams are best to upgrade with, not Flash sadly.

Radio Shack or Canada's The Source should have soldering kits. But, precision is important.

    Otherwise, I wouldn't go there.

  • i opened the camera and the hard dive is Toshiba mk1234gal 120 and its 1.8 zif, i connected with connector that form zif to usb, so i am using it as an external hard drive , hoping to get my videos out, the hard drive is showing under my system hardware profiles and when i connected to computers it recognize it, but i cant see the drive in my window explorer as for example C: or D: or F: , so not able to drag in our out , so i i am not sure how to have it show that way. any tricks, thanks

  • The problem might be a physical jumper setting (set as master) or a drive formatting issue.

    Hard Disk for Windows:

    Control Panel>Administrative>Computer Management>Disk Management

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Hardware Profiles

Toshiba at 1-888-592-0944 or Canada 1-800-663-0378.

  • it appears that your harddrive is a non-laptop hard drive with a iPod connection (zif ide pata).

As long as the zif to usb is for iPod Hard Drives, it will work. Just make sure its for ide pata zif, not sata zif.

It doesn't matter the brand of harddrive that's installed, as long as the part number is the same as in the manual or info on the cam.

  • thanks dude u rock

  • I HAVE A SONY HDR XR150 With a Hard Drive 120GB , my camera wont power up, and have Disneyland vacation videos for my kids that i have on that hard drive , my little son drop it in water so no power comes on. my most important thing is to get the hard drive out and some how to connect it to the computer . and get my videos if the hard drive is still good. 1- i like to know what kind or brand of hard drive my camera has. 2- how to take it out and what connections do i need to connect to pc. thx

  • it will either have a 2.5" connection (laptop connection) or a 1.8" connection (ipod connection). In either case most likely a IDE PATA type (almost sharp pins end) and the drive size itself is 1.8.

If it has 43 pins (4pins extra are jumpers) than its most likely a 2.5 IDE PATA connection on the 1.8.

Not sure of the brand, but PS3 and 360 use Seagate.

I'll need to know how many points are on the cam screws. When your able to open it, let me know the connection type to help you better.

  • @CrewRite thanks crewRite , so far this what i found out on the hard drive, it should be a Toshiba 1.8" 5mm 120GB ZIF MK1231GAL. see this link for the hard drive. on searspartsdirect if you search HDRXR150 Sony it will show pix of parts for hard drive .. i found on amazon zif to usb connector case, i like to know if it will work if i go that way , next few day i should have the camera back and open it to get the hard drive out , warranty company send it back for me to get my videos out .

  • I have a Sony DCR-SR200 and it just stopped working and will not power on. My most important objective is to retrieve the data off of the hard drive. Is there a way that I can remove the hard drive as you have done in this video and then use some thing to download the data off of the removed hard drive?

  • @casingletoncc

you'll need a hard drive usb enclosure designed for 1.8 IDE ZIF or a converter such as 3.5 (Desktop SATA or IDE PATA) to 1.8 than hook up a 2nd (Slave) drive. Once connected to computer use free/safe download called Recuva to Recover.

  • just gotta ask, does this one have nightshot? if so, how good is it?

  • great tutorial! i'll be doing that same thing on my sr10 as well. thanks for posting this informative video.

  • hi i have a video camera and its sound soooo bad can someone help me to improve it plzzzzzzzz im useing my laptop to record videos

  • do you have a desktop computer or just a laptop?

Do your computers in general, have pins or card-like connections on the HardDrives, themselves?

  • I have a JVC HDD 30gb Camcorder Everio and I accidently deleted my grandson talent show :( on the hard drive is there any way I can retrieve it.

I Hope to hear good news from you soon :)

    Thank You

  • @hp77

Zif Drive usb adapter will work. than Free/Safe piriform recovery to recover.

  • @hp77

USB 1.8 ZIF HardDrive Enclosure could be your other option. Than use Piriform Recovery.

  • I had a Sony XRDXR150 that had 120 gigs internal. I was drunk and went down a waterslide with it on a cruise ship to Jamaica and fried the camera. I was ables to recover all of the files myseld for less than 100 bucks instead of paying Drive Savers 1400 bucks. All I did was buy an Addonics 1.8 zif adapter, connected it to a universal hard drive adapter, and used software program to read and transfer the files to an external hard drive. If you have a similar issuer I can help you.

  • Can you use larger than 120GB hdds in this range? I already have an SR12 camcorder and newer Sonys have larger hdds.

  • @damnusename

You still need assistance with this issue?

  • @CrewRite I'd just like to know if I can go larger than 120GB in my sr12 or if I'm limited to the internal drive already fitted. thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • @damnusename

You won't be limited, but any limitations can be based on the year. Unless your able to tell me the year it was made. The only thing I'm able to tell you at this point is that its most likely a Zif type IDE PATA HardDrive (commonly found in iPod Classic, but iPod Touch uses Zif type SATA Solid State Drive instead). Since your cam has 120gb, SATA won't be compatible for sure.

  • @CrewRite i'm thinking of doing the same thing on my sr10. planning to buy a second hand ipod classic just for it's hard disk then i'll replace it with that of the sr10 so the ipod is still usable. can i go for the ipod classic 160Gb version?

  • @damnusename

What year was your camcorder manufactured or built, is what I was asking before. It should say somewhere on the cam or manual.

I'll be able to help you further, if I know.

  • @CrewRite I can't see a date anywhere, but I bought it in April 2008.

  • @damnusename

Thanks, there's a high chance than that it will accept 500gb or under.

I *can't* confirm that any drive above 500gb will work.

  • 2 Weeks ago I got the most annoying error (E:31:00) on my HDR-XR150 with 120GB HDD. I don't really want to buy a new mechanical hard drive and I join to the question posted by couldkill420.

I've searched the net and did not find any explanations regarding limitation specs or compatible hdd lists...

  • @08WhiteDoGG80

You still need assistance with this issue?

  • For those who are facing HDD problems and have any Sony camera with memory stick slot , try this:

    1- Place the memory stick

2- Go to "Home" -> "Manage Media" (or something like that) -> And select the option to change to the memory stick, instead of HD.

3- Go to "Manage Media" again, then to "Format Media", so choose to format the HDD! - Now that you are running the camera from memory stick, you'll not have any problem to format the HD.

At least worked with me! I think it worths the try!

  • @SrFFurtado will a ssd work in it i have a 128 gig ssd i like swap out the hdd

  • @couldkill420

You still need assistance with this issue?

  • are they always ZIF drives?

  • @bakonfreek I mean are all HDD camcorders using ZIF drives?

  • @bakonfreek

You still need assistance with this issue?

  • @CrewRite nah, I got my camcorder from a 60GB HDD to a 500GB HDD

  • @bakonfreek

Must have been expensive, unless you know a place that discounts them like heck.

  • @CrewRite I have a cousin who...knows people...if that counts

  • My Panasonic SDR-H60P 60GB looks very similar to this Sony! Think I might be able to do the same thing with mine?

  • You needed to have a small dish or coffee cup... to put the Parts into. And REMOVE the Strap... Also! Other than that... this is a Fantastic Presentation...!

I bought the Sony HDR-XR520v... With the Newest Technology, 240 Gig HD, and a 12 Mpxl still built into the Camera. Video and Still can be saved to HD or a 16G memory stick. Never use the GPS function. Oh yes... FORMAT at least 3-Times!

  • @ROGER459 You don't need to remove too much, I left my strap on JVC as well, got just the cover off fine! Format is recognized by PCs or it would not work with PC transfers, If you use USB, look under My Computer and EXPLORER to see the files needed, MPEG likely

  • @MetallicBill Sorry Bill.... I thought it the Best Price for the Money! And YES... I do need that much... for an Extened Trip. That way I... DO NOT... Need to take my Laptop...! Thanks,

  • @ROGER459 Ok, answer the tough question, if the HDD offers enough time, what about the battery? That's all I have, no proper AC adapter and it's woefully short. The battery has no Stamina edition like Sony TR Handycam...best batteries in the business that I know of. Over 12 hours on one battery! Mid range I bought recently is about 7 to 8 hours!

  • @MetallicBill Sorry, I was thinking of all the JVCs I'd been researching., if your HDD Sony does have Stimina, you're in luck I guess! haha

  • @MetallicBill Before I left for London UK this last week... I went to Amazon.com and purchased 4 ... info Lithium 100 batteries for ONLY $23 each. They have other there of the same for $98 each and my local Best Buy has them for $100...! With that Battery I get OVER 5 hours of HD Recording timezzzz1

  • @ROGER459 I bought two replacements for my Sony TRV99, the best of the TR XR series for the analogs. Only thing is, Canon beats Sony with it's audio capabilities in Hi8 format. The batteries and size were the two factors that forced me to go with Sony. I'd like a Stamina cell for the JVC ones! haha

  • Let me clarify. My camera is destroyed. I want to pull the drive, get a zif converter and transfer the HDD data to my Mac. Does the Sony HDD have a proprietary format? Thanks!

  • have you tried to read the HDD data through a PC. Will a PC recognize the format?

  • Sonysr10: Hi, do you know how to get better sound on live recordings? I have the Sony HDR-SR11, but the audio is real bad. I record rock bands on stage and the image is real good but the sound is terrible, because for sure has no "limiter". I will apreciate your opinion. Greetings from Argentina.

  • @EDYLAFOCA1953 Always buy a camera with MIC jack input, add your own. For live gigs I also tape... see my channel for proof. I use ear-buds headset plugged into mic jacks...no batteries! It works at cutting DBs coming in!

  • Thanks a lot my friend, its exactly thats I was searching.Tank you so much

  • mann. i need heelllpppp.

the usb of my xr200v is not working. and i need the files in the camera. i did a backup of all pc files on the camera.

If i put the hard disk in other camera i can acess the files?

    thankss!!!

  • good job

  • Very good instruction video. I use a sony HDR-SR10 and this video made me order a new hard drive of 80 Gb in the USA (in Europe you can't buy these disks). I just received it a few hours ago. Unpacked in and start replacing the disk.

    It works excellent.

  • Do you know if this still works with other brand Hard Drives?

  • @fredstarNZ yes, I just put a Samsung 120gb hard drive in mine.

  • @Fisheyland dude you dont even have a camera

  • @monsterskater123 I have this exact same camera.

  • @Fisheyland oh sorry man when i went to your channel i thought the videos were just your favorites

  • WHER YOU BUY THE HDD MAN REALY NICE VID *****

  • Is it still working?

  • Awesome! Back in 2008 I was contemplating the idea on my ex-camcorder Sony SR7, but was hesitant to screw something up. Searching for "hacking hdd camcorders" back then didn't yield any results. I knew it could be done because all electronics are becoming nowadays like little computers with storage. I applaud to your determination and success on this hack.

  • i'm too scared that i'll screw something up on the firmware and hardware

  • This seems like a snap to do. Do the other brands of camera have similar 'easiness' of changeout?

Nice Wiha screwdrivers! I have set of them, the best i ever had. I'll never go back to USA type tools again! NEVER!

  • Hi, can I change the hard drive to my HDR-SR7E? Will the camera work with Toshiba MK1231GAL the 120 gb toshiba hard drive?Thank you in advance for your answer.

  • You have given very nice presentation I successfully upgraded my sony camcorder

    THANKS a lot. GREAT!!!!

  • Awesome, but I know I just don't have the guts to try it for real on my SR10.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice :)

But I will never do it

    I will break it xD

  • quasar camera for sale on ebay right now

  • i just bought the sony hdr-xr105e

what for Hard drive can i put in and how big???

  • it is a risky operation.

  • Amazing stuff, I never knew this was possible. Thank you very much and great video.

I have this camera and find outdoor videos good but indoor videos are very poor under low lighting, very poor colours on screen, can you recommend anything I should alter to improve indoor shooting?

  • Hi, I make some questions, you made the attempt to turn the camcorder without the hard drive? is possible according to common sense to use this camcorder no hard drive and memory card only? I have interest to film more than the recommended height by Sony and the problem is the hard drive, which will happen if I get disconnected directly when I film in height and just leave the memory card? operate the camcorder?

  • Hi

    Can i use bigger one

    like 200gb

  • you might but the camera might not recognize all the space maby like 160gb or so but google it

  • Do you know if this will work on a DCR-SR100? It comes with a 30gb.

  • nice job!

  • can you replace a Sony HDR-XR105E with a higher hdd - it comes with 80gb - whats the biggest i can put in?

  • im new at video cameras

im look for a good camera for outdoors and indoors

    god quality like HD

    so plz help

btw whats the different in hard drive and HD camcorders

  • Hard drive cams have a built in "storage" for your videos. typically could fit 4-8 hrs of video on them. HD is for High Definition camcorder. They typically are hard drive or memory card

  • @fueledbymusic3 i was told that the best quality is High Definition camcorders with HD tape.

  • What if I want to hook up an external drive like a Western Digital My Book, do you know where I could find the info or how to do that?

  • You can´t do it.

    WD external are USB 2.0

We are talking about SATA interface.

    Two different beasts...

Unless you took WD apart, make a adapter cable, and do a new way to mechanical support it. Too messy...Too complicated...

Why you would like to do this?

  • I'm curious about one thing: Toshiba lists the original drive (MK6014GAL) as 60GB and you get 290minutes.

MK8009 are listed as 80GB. and you get 585 minutes....

Is it working smooth with no flaws?

jaymdouglas tryed a 120GB, but I don't know the logical addressing of the MK1231. This issue is a important one when replacing embedded HDDs.

  • I just put in a Toshiba MK1231GAL 120GB into my SR10 and the camera records just fine but when you try and play any videos on the camera I receive a error stating "Data Errror:...

Is this possibly a size limitation for the firmware since this is last years camera?

  • @jaymdouglas I did it with my sr7 and it works (watch?v=Jr7wjdvF_Lw)

  • Haha, only 5 hours, that's loads, the battery would run out before you could film that long.

I know what you mean though, it's not long if you can't upload the footage somewhere and you could carry spare batteries, they cost quite a bit though.

Side note, I didn't even think about being able to swap out the hard drive, genius dude.

Does this camcorder have a thread for lenses? Only asking cuz my TG1 doesn't.

  • Great! thank you, very good idea! genius...

  • Hello there,

I need install any O.S or just put new HD, put it on, and format? Just It?

    Best Regards,

    LG

  • great stuff

  • awesome tutorial. My JVC failed and I was gonna throw it away but this video inspired me to replace the HDD and it's fine and dandy. again, thanks a million

  • Could you Please send more informations? Which HDD? etc?

  • great walk through.

  • I just got One of those and the Only thing that will make me take it apart is when I have confirm that there is problem with my original 40 GB.

good Video tutorials. I wont to cry It feels like you are taken my apart.

  • Cool, I just got the HDR-SR10 and I will someday upgrade my HDD. Thanks for Posting this!
