Radio Shack or Canada's The Source should have soldering kits. But, precision is important.

it will either have a 2.5" connection (laptop connection) or a 1.8" connection (ipod connection). In either case most likely a IDE PATA type (almost sharp pins end) and the drive size itself is 1.8.
If it has 43 pins (4pins extra are jumpers) than its most likely a 2.5 IDE PATA connection on the 1.8.
Not sure of the brand, but PS3 and 360 use Seagate.
I'll need to know how many points are on the cam screws. When your able to open it, let me know the connection type to help you better.
@CrewRite thanks crewRite , so far this what i found out on the hard drive, it should be a Toshiba 1.8" 5mm 120GB ZIF MK1231GAL. see this link for the hard drive. on searspartsdirect if you search HDRXR150 Sony it will show pix of parts for hard drive .. i found on amazon zif to usb connector case, i like to know if it will work if i go that way , next few day i should have the camera back and open it to get the hard drive out , warranty company send it back for me to get my videos out .
I have a Sony DCR-SR200 and it just stopped working and will not power on. My most important objective is to retrieve the data off of the hard drive. Is there a way that I can remove the hard drive as you have done in this video and then use some thing to download the data off of the removed hard drive?
you'll need a hard drive usb enclosure designed for 1.8 IDE ZIF or a converter such as 3.5 (Desktop SATA or IDE PATA) to 1.8 than hook up a 2nd (Slave) drive. Once connected to computer use free/safe download called Recuva to Recover.
I had a Sony XRDXR150 that had 120 gigs internal. I was drunk and went down a waterslide with it on a cruise ship to Jamaica and fried the camera. I was ables to recover all of the files myseld for less than 100 bucks instead of paying Drive Savers 1400 bucks. All I did was buy an Addonics 1.8 zif adapter, connected it to a universal hard drive adapter, and used software program to read and transfer the files to an external hard drive. If you have a similar issuer I can help you.
You won't be limited, but any limitations can be based on the year. Unless your able to tell me the year it was made. The only thing I'm able to tell you at this point is that its most likely a Zif type IDE PATA HardDrive (commonly found in iPod Classic, but iPod Touch uses Zif type SATA Solid State Drive instead). Since your cam has 120gb, SATA won't be compatible for sure.
@CrewRite i'm thinking of doing the same thing on my sr10. planning to buy a second hand ipod classic just for it's hard disk then i'll replace it with that of the sr10 so the ipod is still usable. can i go for the ipod classic 160Gb version?
2 Weeks ago I got the most annoying error (E:31:00) on my HDR-XR150 with 120GB HDD. I don't really want to buy a new mechanical hard drive and I join to the question posted by couldkill420.
I've searched the net and did not find any explanations regarding limitation specs or compatible hdd lists...
For those who are facing HDD problems and have any Sony camera with memory stick slot , try this:
1- Place the memory stick
2- Go to "Home" -> "Manage Media" (or something like that) -> And select the option to change to the memory stick, instead of HD.
3- Go to "Manage Media" again, then to "Format Media", so choose to format the HDD! - Now that you are running the camera from memory stick, you'll not have any problem to format the HD.
At least worked with me! I think it worths the try!

I bought the Sony HDR-XR520v... With the Newest Technology, 240 Gig HD, and a 12 Mpxl still built into the Camera. Video and Still can be saved to HD or a 16G memory stick. Never use the GPS function. Oh yes... FORMAT at least 3-Times!

@ROGER459 You don't need to remove too much, I left my strap on JVC as well, got just the cover off fine! Format is recognized by PCs or it would not work with PC transfers, If you use USB, look under My Computer and EXPLORER to see the files needed, MPEG likely
@MetallicBill Sorry Bill.... I thought it the Best Price for the Money! And YES... I do need that much... for an Extened Trip. That way I... DO NOT... Need to take my Laptop...! Thanks,
@ROGER459 Ok, answer the tough question, if the HDD offers enough time, what about the battery? That's all I have, no proper AC adapter and it's woefully short. The battery has no Stamina edition like Sony TR Handycam...best batteries in the business that I know of. Over 12 hours on one battery! Mid range I bought recently is about 7 to 8 hours!
@MetallicBill Before I left for London UK this last week... I went to Amazon.com and purchased 4 ... info Lithium 100 batteries for ONLY $23 each. They have other there of the same for $98 each and my local Best Buy has them for $100...! With that Battery I get OVER 5 hours of HD Recording timezzzz1
@ROGER459 I bought two replacements for my Sony TRV99, the best of the TR XR series for the analogs. Only thing is, Canon beats Sony with it's audio capabilities in Hi8 format. The batteries and size were the two factors that forced me to go with Sony. I'd like a Stamina cell for the JVC ones! haha
Let me clarify. My camera is destroyed. I want to pull the drive, get a zif converter and transfer the HDD data to my Mac. Does the Sony HDD have a proprietary format? Thanks!
Sonysr10: Hi, do you know how to get better sound on live recordings? I have the Sony HDR-SR11, but the audio is real bad. I record rock bands on stage and the image is real good but the sound is terrible, because for sure has no "limiter". I will apreciate your opinion. Greetings from Argentina.

Very good instruction video. I use a sony HDR-SR10 and this video made me order a new hard drive of 80 Gb in the USA (in Europe you can't buy these disks). I just received it a few hours ago. Unpacked in and start replacing the disk.
Awesome! Back in 2008 I was contemplating the idea on my ex-camcorder Sony SR7, but was hesitant to screw something up. Searching for "hacking hdd camcorders" back then didn't yield any results. I knew it could be done because all electronics are becoming nowadays like little computers with storage. I applaud to your determination and success on this hack.
Hi, can I change the hard drive to my HDR-SR7E? Will the camera work with Toshiba MK1231GAL the 120 gb toshiba hard drive?Thank you in advance for your answer.
Amazing stuff, I never knew this was possible. Thank you very much and great video.
I have this camera and find outdoor videos good but indoor videos are very poor under low lighting, very poor colours on screen, can you recommend anything I should alter to improve indoor shooting?
Hi, I make some questions, you made the attempt to turn the camcorder without the hard drive? is possible according to common sense to use this camcorder no hard drive and memory card only? I have interest to film more than the recommended height by Sony and the problem is the hard drive, which will happen if I get disconnected directly when I film in height and just leave the memory card? operate the camcorder?
Hard drive cams have a built in "storage" for your videos. typically could fit 4-8 hrs of video on them. HD is for High Definition camcorder. They typically are hard drive or memory card
I just put in a Toshiba MK1231GAL 120GB into my SR10 and the camera records just fine but when you try and play any videos on the camera I receive a error stating "Data Errror:...
Is this possibly a size limitation for the firmware since this is last years camera?
Haha, only 5 hours, that's loads, the battery would run out before you could film that long.
I know what you mean though, it's not long if you can't upload the footage somewhere and you could carry spare batteries, they cost quite a bit though.
Side note, I didn't even think about being able to swap out the hard drive, genius dude.
Does this camcorder have a thread for lenses? Only asking cuz my TG1 doesn't.
awesome tutorial. My JVC failed and I was gonna throw it away but this video inspired me to replace the HDD and it's fine and dandy. again, thanks a million

The problem might be a physical jumper setting (set as master) or a drive formatting issue.
Hard Disk for Windows:
Control Panel>Administrative>Computer Management>Disk Management
Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

it appears that your harddrive is a non-laptop hard drive with a iPod connection (zif ide pata).
As long as the zif to usb is for iPod Hard Drives, it will work. Just make sure its for ide pata zif, not sata zif.
It doesn't matter the brand of harddrive that's installed, as long as the part number is the same as in the manual or info on the cam.

im look for a good camera for outdoors and indoors
god quality like HD
so plz help
btw whats the different in hard drive and HD camcorders

Hard drive cams have a built in "storage" for your videos. typically could fit 4-8 hrs of video on them. HD is for High Definition camcorder. They typically are hard drive or memory card

@fueledbymusic3 i was told that the best quality is High Definition camcorders with HD tape.

What if I want to hook up an external drive like a Western Digital My Book, do you know where I could find the info or how to do that?
Inteligento 2 years ago
You can´t do it.
WD external are USB 2.0
We are talking about SATA interface.
Two different beasts...
Unless you took WD apart, make a adapter cable, and do a new way to mechanical support it. Too messy...Too complicated...
Why you would like to do this?

I'm curious about one thing: Toshiba lists the original drive (MK6014GAL) as 60GB and you get 290minutes.
MK8009 are listed as 80GB. and you get 585 minutes....
Is it working smooth with no flaws?
jaymdouglas tryed a 120GB, but I don't know the logical addressing of the MK1231. This issue is a important one when replacing embedded HDDs.

I just put in a Toshiba MK1231GAL 120GB into my SR10 and the camera records just fine but when you try and play any videos on the camera I receive a error stating "Data Errror:...
Is this possibly a size limitation for the firmware since this is last years camera?

@jaymdouglas I did it with my sr7 and it works (watch?v=Jr7wjdvF_Lw)

Haha, only 5 hours, that's loads, the battery would run out before you could film that long.
I know what you mean though, it's not long if you can't upload the footage somewhere and you could carry spare batteries, they cost quite a bit though.
Side note, I didn't even think about being able to swap out the hard drive, genius dude.
Does this camcorder have a thread for lenses? Only asking cuz my TG1 doesn't.
