I wish I could get the satisfaction by running a 5k race, but I can't. The only satisfaction I get is when I do something very few people can do like skiing a first descent because people like me who society deem as losers have to overcompesate by doing the unthinkable. Maybe the day I ski Everest people will be my friend.
Wow...I am so glad that you posted comments because it made me curious enough to take a peak at your page and I found this video. I need some motivation because I am planning to do my first 5K next month. I am on week 5 day 1 of the couch to 5k program and I am still having trouble picturing me doing an actual 5k but since I am a true couch potato this should be interesting to say the least. Any advice? How do you like that Garmin gadget?
@qochemist Aww thanks for taking a peak girlie! Welcome to my side of the YouTube world :o)
This was my very first 5k. I was scared as heck but I had to face my fear....and now I run like a running fool. I just completed my very first full marathon (26.2 miles) this past June. It was an awesome experience!
Oh wow! I'm excited for you and your first 5k. You CAN do it! Just remember, its not a race against anyone else but yourself!
You're running against that little voice inside your head that'll tell you to stop running and quit! Just keep going. Whether you walk, run, or jog it, it's still a 5k and when you cross the finishline you can proudly say, "I ran a 5k!" :o)
I actually bought a newer model Garmin. Its the Garmin 305 (its an older model now b/c Garmin is always upgrading). I LOVE it! It's a runner's best friend.
@Smile2DayTears2Morro - Thanks for the encouraging words... A full marathon!! Wow I am impressed... How long did that take? Any dietary advice that you can give me? I am not looking to loose weight and so I haven't changed my eating but I know that if I did make some dietary adjustments my body will perform a lot better. Any specific things that you can recommend? I know I need to intake more water and I am doing that.
I am interested to know how your time is now. I just done my first 5k race last month and came in at 32:16. I am doing my 2nd race on Apr 24 and hope my time has drasticially improved.
then again the farthest I've ran was (only) about 5mi during XC practice and (my) Coach said my time was about 49 minutes.... which is good... I think
Yeah if you start heavy training right away you will drop 5 minutes within even a month. It's more mental then anything. I run highschool cross country. 5:03 mile 17:52 5k and the more you run the more you realize it's all about learning how to race! Keep doing local 5k's or find a Susan G Komen one around you. They are a blast! Keep it up! ~Texas
great job! if you train for a couple months before your next one, you'll drop tons of time. 5k's are great because they dont take a lot from you, and u can be ready for another one in a week easily!
The finish line is always "somewhere up there!" Glad you had fun with your first 5k! I hope you have continued running! I have been like a yo yo when it comes to running...I remember when my wife ran her first 5k with me, she was so afraid of coming in last place! Actually, she finished in 33 or 34 minutes and was ahead of about 10 other runners. I was so proud of her that day! Now I am trying to get my 9-year old daughter into running!
i started out just like you. running 11 min miles. i stuck with it 3-4 times a week of running. after 1 year i could run a mile in like 6:30. i didnt even run all to much. just run 2 miles a day. then when the race comes up then boost your milage to 4 or maybe 5 a day if u can. but remember. list to ur body. if its sore or injured. take a day or 2 off. other then that keep running! it helps u live longer!!!
I will be training in fours for my 4th Marathon,I have done three... 1. Rock n'Roll Marathon 26.2 miles,2. Nike Marathon 13.1-half marathon,3. S.F. Marathon 13.1-half,so I am hoping to run a marathon in July 2009.
Congratulations on your weight loss and first 5K ! I just did my first one last weekend in Denver. (I use my Garmin, too). Keep going ... Tony from San Diego.
When is your due date?? I'm sooo excited for you! Anyway, running 5k's is getting to be very very addictive now. I completed my second 5k last Saturday. I even cut my run finished a lil over 4 minutes than my first one. Theres anothe one coming up soon....hopefully my shin splints are healed by then :o(
I am so proud of you. It is a hard thing to do. I ran my first half marathon in April, I was so glad to be done. Places i didn't think I had hurt but my training came in handy. I would do your watch me shrink but I am going on vacation to the states in a week and I haven't been home (Chicago)in three years so i plan on eating just about everything in sight but when I get back I will get starting shedding my Checkers, Olive Garden, and Applebees weight. Continue working out, there's an end.
Nice job, cool video. I read your description and the only thing discouraging is that more people don't decide to get up and get back in shape. Good luck at the next race!!!
I have just started a couch to 5k program. This video was awesome and inspiring. My 5k goal is sept 27. It is sponsored my miles for mammograms. I can't wait to run it.
YEA!!!!!! I am sooo proud of you.. YOU DID IT!!!!! :)) You guys put a smile on my face. Great way to spend some family time to be supportive and encourage each other. I like how hubby was running with you ( AWW!!).
SOOOOOO proud of you, i would have passed out about half a mile in to it...I won't even run towards a doughnut....lol. You and your family are awesome the way you all support eachother...it's refreshing.
Great start for your new plan! I can hardly wait to see you do the 10k. It's not bad and you'll be ready for it. Keep up the good training and thanks for sharing. :0)
good job you are doing good girl, you are blessed with the kids running to good job kids and hubby, lets stay moveing smile lets get em them jeans......
(Great Job Amy) That was such a nice family outting.I am going to see if me and my family can do something like that. How often do you and your family go to the YMCA.I asked because we go four to five times a week.
So far...just once or twice a week. I'm slowly increasing that. I work-out while the kids swim or play basketball! AND the Y has exercise clases too....AWESOME!!! :o)
Omg, this was so inspiring! And you made it a family affair, which is great! So amazing to have the support of your family there...I want to run, too, now!
wow i gotta pick up that Garmin Forerunner 101! i had no idea they had that! I'm so proud of you Amy! I knew you could do it, but your sweetie did play you a little with the finish line. lol. "it's right here." "it's right here." lol.

the most important thing is that you finished...I know it ain't easy...I have to start getting myself in shape too...just cause I'm skinny don't mean I'm healthy :(
A 5k is 3.1 miles :o) I saw a few of us colored folk!! Haaaa! lol Seriously though, there were only a few of us out there. Sweetie ran with me the entire time. He ran ahead at the end so he could record me at the finish line. He's been in the Army for almost 16 years....so he could have EASILY beaten me....FOR NOW....Buuuuaaahahaaa!!!
I wish I could get the satisfaction by running a 5k race, but I can't. The only satisfaction I get is when I do something very few people can do like skiing a first descent because people like me who society deem as losers have to overcompesate by doing the unthinkable. The Forerunners are AWESOME. They have so many upgraded models (201, 301, 305....) but the 101 was the cheapest one I could find. It was $99.99.

the most important thing is that you finished...I know it ain't easy...I have to start getting myself in shape too...just cause I'm skinny don't mean I'm healthy :(

LOL @ "here we go like a herd of cattle"!
You said the 10K's 6.2 miles. How many miles is the 5K?
Where are the black folks??! LOL! YAY, I saw one! One of us!
Sweetie finished before you? Come on Amy, you can do it! You gotta beat him next time!
The last pic is so cute!
