To me the issue comes down to greed. People are basically forced to live in a consumer society of cyclical consumption and drive fossil fueled cars, and this is because industry has repressed new technology that would help us live in a better, cleaner way for the sake of profit. It's easy to say ride a bike but it does nothing to address the real polluters, which isn't the average person.
Richard Alley is the host of the PBS series Earth: The Operators' Manual - an exciting new show on sustainability and climate change that travels the globe as it gives you practical knowledge and tips.

There's no "debate". If you got proof that humans are not causing serious climate change right now, go submit it to a peer-reviewed journal in climatology and get it published.

I have always been skeptical of global warming claims, believing that thousands of factors control our climate, not just one. But if Richard Alley is sounding the alarm on global climate I tend to believe him. When I was at Ohio State studying Geology, Richard was a teaching assistant. I met many bright people at OSU, but Rich was the brightest.
That's lunacy. The statistical correlation between warming and CO2 presence in the atmosphere that is due to fossil fuel burning is very strong. Dumping CO2 into the atmosphere at about a million times the rate at which non-human nature can create them leads to warming. The wobble in the axis doesn't explain the difference between this warming trend and what it has been before. Physics and chemistry show you this.
Actually from my research at the INL the statistical evidence supporting human caused CO2 increase is very weak. Statistically speaking mankind only accounts for less than 1 % of all CO2 emitted annually. Add to that the fact that H20 is a far larger climate driver and there was nearly 8 times more CO2 in the atmosphere 200,000 and 70,000 years ago than their is today, long before humanity had an effect on anything.
@Santaflin This is my problem with this debacle. One scientist produces data stating that the temperature is going down from an allegedly reliable scientific method and another produces data stating that temperatures are going up...who is right and who has skewed data? I have personally plotted the NOAA data available since 1983 and the temperatures outside of big cities are going drastically down and the temps in cities are going up, somehow I doubt CO2 is causing that.
So how do does one explain the trend of global surface temperatures over the last decade given said statistical correlation and the continued increase in atmospheric CO2? I agree anthropogenic emissions are now certainly a piece of the global temperature puzzle. But it might behoove our credibility to ignore surface weather stations before the infrared satellite data (where many fewer systematic errors and biases are present).
Use the brain God gave you. Does anyone doubt that the tilt of the Earth's axis gives us spring, summer, fall and winter? And if that tilt wobbles (and it does) would not that affect global climate?
The last ice age was about 10 or 15 thousand years ago. We are due for another ice age in about 12000 years.
Vostok ice core samples prove my point. C02 levels rise for 21,000 years and then stop. The ice core samples go back 400,000 years. Plato knew more than this guy, he called it the 'Precession of the Equinoxes' because the stars were observed to fall back 1 degree in 72 years (360 X 72 = 25,920). Plato divided time into 12 Ages (Leo was the golden age about 6,000 years ago). Aquarius on December 21, 2012 is the very bottom of the cycle!
I don't understand why there is a debate? Everyone knows co2 is a greenhouse gases. It's a fact that greenhouse gases raise earth temperature? The earth has natural cycle of producing these gases, with spikes and valleys. Then human's through it industrial activity, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation add to what the earth naturally produces. The accumulation of these greenhouse gases of both natural and human activities are causing global changes in climate and weather.

Why do we keep getting the phrase 'debate' thrown down our throat?
A debate evokes two logical points of view.
There's no debate. This is about fact vs. emotion.
Just like what took place when it was discovered that the world was round.

Temperature isn't going down. 2000 - 2010 was the warmest decade on the measured record since 1990 - 2000, which was the warmest since 1980 - 1990.

What matters is that CO2 from burning fossil fuels and coal is what puts the emissions over the amount being absorbed.
And sorry, your CO2 data is wrong. Search for data on the Vostok Ice Core, and you will see.

Carbon Dioxide levels are .038 percent. Nitrogen and Oxygen make up 98 percent with argon and water vapor making almost 2 percent.
Global climate change is caused by the wobble of the Earth's axis, not human beings.
AcePilot101 3 years ago
Is todays temperature perfect? A hotter planet would be better for human survival, everyone knows co2 and heat help to create more food.
I'm more worried about global cooling, which imo is more likely.
