Hi i have and 05 altima and having that problem, and i would like to find the pre cat if you can help on where to find it on ebay, that would be awesome, thanks
i have an 05 altima 2.5 s and i was goin' to replace de precat with the header but my mechanic told me that he wasn't sure if this was legal here in raleigh nc, do you know if there's a web site where i can find out if this is legal here???? thanx
@eddgiles being a former resident of raleigh myself, since its bolt on why dont you keep the stock header on until inspection then bolt on you new and improved headers but like he said if you got two cats so you will still pass inspection no worries
I have the 05 Altima and it has never had problems with the Precat. I dont think it continued with the problem after the 04 model. I'm buying OBX headers for mine.
cool... I am getting some headers and going to install them... we'll see how that turns out lol...you think with a stock exhaust and only a CAI...would headers give me any HP?
How many miles did you have on the altima before you change the pre-cat?(because I have a 06 2.5s with 50,000 miles) and what type of header do you recommend (nismo or other brands?) so far no problems but I better be prepare! (help, please :( )
@yellowfever180 did u get a catalic converter on that header ....i have the 3.5 se model and the header doset come wit catalic converter....please respond thank you....great video thoe
@yellowfever180 i have an 02 nissan altima 2.5L 4cyl, the spacer you're talking about is called a spark plug defouler, i have some videos up of my car if you want to check them out. thanks travis
I just replaced the headers on my 2003 Galant and the Oxygen Censor tripped the check engine light so I replaced it, and same problem occurred again. Where did you by the spacer and what is it exact name? Could you send me a link?
that shit happened to my 2001 2.4l, the pre cat ruined my engine and caused an engine leak that led to very low compression..... although it was kind of a beater everday driver and it probably could have been avoided
i remember i looked up this information at the time, but don't remember the values. as for lubing up any parts i don't believe so. i may have used some anti-seize, but its pretty much take off bolt on.
Thanks for posting this, very informative. Question for you: Do you know if 2006 qr25de engines (i have a 2006 sentra se-r spec v) still have this Pre-cat prob and the butterfly screw problem?
I think the butterfly issue was taken care of in 2006. I'm not sure about the pre-cat. Just look at the header on the front of your motor. If it looks like the one in the video that I replaced then you have the same problem. Essentially, you are looking for the bottom round (precat) section. Peace.
butterfly screws were revised in 05 models and on and your precat should be OK but just in case, installing a header wouldn't hurt. I think as long as it's not a 02-03 model QR25DE engine then it's in good shape. I have an 04 altima and I replaced the precat which didn't look too bad, it had 34K miles and the screen in the cat which had potential to break up and scrape cylinder walls looked in good shape so your 06 should be fine.
hmm. i guess that depends. if you live in california or the chicago area where they visually inspect vehicles you might have a problem. they would likely fail you. if you live anywhere else they are as legal as any other modification. again there is a cat behind the headers so the vehicle would pass the emissions test in terms of emissions, but the inspector may fail you just for having changed it.
you have no idea what you are talking about. ask any nissan tech how many they have seen. do you know anything about a precat? it is located right at the exhaust port. anyone who has had freshman physics knows this is very possible. if you don't believe me do a google search. there are plenty of people who have personally experienced this. the material in the precat can and will score the cylinder walls and will lead to massive oil consumption.
Wrong, nissan replaced thousands of engines due to this fault. The precat gets sucked back up into the engine and scores the cylinder, causing oil consumption which if goes unchecked blows the engine up.
on the QR25DE the exhaust valves open slightly during the intake cycle to burn unburnt fuel so when it breaks it gets sucked back up and total failure occurs.
The guy I bought mine off of was a seller on ebay; I think he quit selling them. I used to have a link to another one. I'll see if I can find it and will post it if I am successful.
This might have been posted before but who's the manufacturer of your header? I've got the 03 2.5 sl and I can't seem to find it anywhere. I also wanted to make sure I didn't get the one with the single 02 senser. Can you help?
I have purchased an OBX sports header for my Altima 2.5 S '06, it appeared to have a single hole for an O2 sensor and without the catalyic, but yours has two O2 sensors and i have one!!! how is that?
and how can i get rid of the check engine light after installing? i really appreciate your reply.
You have to place the second O2 sensor behind the second catalytic converter if you bought the one hole model. This means you will have to have an exhaust shop drill a hole that the second O2 sensor will fit in further down the exhaust line. If I were you I would send it back and find a two hole version.
The light will go off if you properly install the second O2 sensor behind the second cat. There is no other way with a one hole header as far as I know.
that's why i am surprised from your header that has two O2 sensors! mine has only one and it's 2006 model! from what i know Altimas 02-06 have the same engine QR25DE!!!
anyway, so as long as if i install my OBX header and the O2 sensor is fitted properly into the hole, the check engine won't appear, right? because i heard it will come ON no matter what, because of the ECU's fixed program? is that true?
Like I said, the second one is further down, not on the header but further down in the mid-pipe. I'm about to get this done to my 04 altima. Your header is probably made only for 2004+ altimas.
you can get a megan header on ebay for about 195 shiped and get those spacers [antifoulers] at a autoparts store for like five bucks. you have to drill the the one that the sensor screws into
thnx for the info i will take it to my dealer and see what they tell me hopefully its nothing big ill reply back with what they tell me for whoever want to know
I have a 06 altima 2.5 and I did have to take it back for a ECU recall...the dealer swapped my engine and it works fine but recently
as I turn the key to start my car it needs that extra kick to start I think it could be my starter IDK but this didn't happen before when I had the old re-call engine in, I would just turn the key and it would start instantly.....I still love my car (dammmn Nissan)
why did they swap the engine? the ecu recall wasn't an engine swap. you must have had major issues. i know there have been some issues with crank/cam issues that might apply to your problem. from what i know the precat and butterfly screw issues are the only ones that could result in total engine failure. if your car is dying or not starting right look into the cam/crank sensors. good luck.
are you saying your car just shuts off? could be anything. i would guess, knowing the altima, that it is a crank or cam sensor, but i'm no mechanic. just a guess.
not sure. a guy on ebay sold them in the past, but if you can't find it there you would have to make it i guess. maybe take the o2 sensor somwhere that sells that kind of stuff or a machine shop and have it made.
i haven't noticed any excess fuel consumption. there is obvious h.p. gain on the low end. i wanted to see how quick it was so after the install i took off from a dead stop against a friend in a grand prix gtp (supercharged). i stayed even with him until the shift to third. the increased air flow makes it really move through first gear. i'm guessing i got between 15 and 20 h.p. gain. again i didn't do it for that reason though.
My mothers ALTIMA 2.5 shakes really bad when its 50 and below. But once it warms up completely it runs like new.with 112k on the dash

a spacer can be made with 2 spark plug non-foulers, one has to be drilled out. Go to Auto Zone, it will cost like 4 bucks for 2 non foulers.
kostya53 3 years ago
so how do i ask for them, are they all the same?

it's part number 42009, there's two different lengths, two of those will do just fine.

you have no idea what you are talking about. ask any nissan tech how many they have seen. do you know anything about a precat? it is located right at the exhaust port. anyone who has had freshman physics knows this is very possible. if you don't believe me do a google search. there are plenty of people who have personally experienced this. the material in the precat can and will score the cylinder walls and will lead to massive oil consumption.

suikoayanajim2 3 years ago
You have to place the second O2 sensor behind the second catalytic converter if you bought the one hole model. This means you will have to have an exhaust shop drill a hole that the second O2 sensor will fit in further down the exhaust line. If I were you I would send it back and find a two hole version.
barkingelectron 3 years ago
i see...
so what about the check engine light?
i don't want it! I HATE IT!!! :(

Like I said, the second one is further down, not on the header but further down in the mid-pipe. I'm about to get this done to my 04 altima. Your header is probably made only for 2004+ altimas.

why did they swap the engine? the ecu recall wasn't an engine swap. you must have had major issues. i know there have been some issues with crank/cam issues that might apply to your problem. from what i know the precat and butterfly screw issues are the only ones that could result in total engine failure. if your car is dying or not starting right look into the cam/crank sensors. good luck.
