I asked a friend, who was in WWII, what they tasted like and he said they were faintly chocolate but mainly had a bland taste. Allegedly , every now and then, they would receive rations with actual candy in them (Mars bars, Hersheys, etc..) These were convented and traded readily with civilians...

@sturmovikdragon MREjap? I like his vids. They show rations that I can't get very easily. I mean there is a place where I can get 'em but they are a tad pricey most of the time. I will do a few of them though.

I just read that the d bar was made intentionally bad tasting so that soldiers would not eat it unless they had to. the requirement sent to Hershey said "...a bar weighing about four ounces, able to withstand high temperatures, high in food energy value, and tasting just a little better than a boiled potato

@grooveclubhouse I've read about that to. From what I've read, it was the most despised rations at that time. The one's I tried weren't ungodly hard and didn't taste like crap. So something tells me they weren't like the originals. lulz
