In the heat of the Stawell Gift, Dinan appeared to beat Carl Grant but the judges awarded the heat to Grant. With heat winners only advancing to the semi finals, it was a big disappointment for Dinan. He was running well at the time and as a past winner (1980) he would have been formidable in one of the semis. I haven't seen the 1982 heats for many years, but I do have it on an old VHS tape In my opinion, Dinan won by a few centimetres. The judges went for Grant & that's all that matters.
Your father Grant was a terrific athlete, technically very efficient with a well balanced fluent style. His win in the 1982 semi final was a classic 'Grant Riddoch' performance, full of poise, courage and strong to the line.
