This poem is not playful at all. The mirror is a burden on the woman's life, telling lies and placing itself within godly status. She struggles with finding her identity and fights with the fact that she faces judgement everywhere, not just in front of the mirror. Some interpret that the woman is Sylvia herself, and she turns from the lake to the liars, moon and candles, romance, to resonate on her past experience through divorce and marital struggles.

it is not a playful poem...the mirror reveals the passing of time, the loss of youth and the grief that comes with becoming an older woman, in a society where the young are gods.
I don't think it's exactly playful...I'm pretty sure it's about how she feels frustrated she can't be herself, plus she killed herself not long after writing it... :s
