a lot of it (if not all of it) is in minor keys. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was really the first pioneer in doom metal. Since he needed to ease the pressure on his finger tips (which got chopped off in an industrial accident), he tuned all the strings on his guitar down a half step. Hence, minor keys
