For some mysterious reason I love listening to this album during sunsets in the dead of winter. The crowd noises give me chills. Zawinul was such a powerful wizard with those keys.
@halfmonk when WR released this album , one of their best , Josef Zawinul exclaimed "This...is the Baddest shit on the Planet !" i thought so , ha ha !
I dont consider myself a world traveler, but these are some of the tunes that would accompany me on my many visits to different cities throughout the meditteranean when in the Navy in the mid seventies. This brings back some fond memories of sights sounds and people never to be experienced again. Thanks!
the green and blue thing in the sky on the album cover looks like a ufo i saw with a friend about a month before i stumbled upon weather report on youtube while looking for some jazz/fusion.
I remember seein' them here in Baltimore once and drank a fifth of Manichevitz Cream straight down b4 I went in. Larry Coryell and the Eleventh House opened. Miraslov was the bassist then. They just simply TOTALLY kicked ass !!! Coryell and dem wasn't no slouches either !!!!!!!
@A2theD1 Yeah you don't get anything likr it on the rest of the track do you? Zawinul embraced new instruments to make music better. Just think about the myriad of jazzers who stick with formula.
Hot/Tight groove!!. I have several 70's albums collecting dust somewhere and am trying to explore tunes I haven't heard. Growing tired of all the "Jaco worship",I decided to look for other albums. Don't get me wrong, I dig him, and listened to it much in the late 70's as a teen. This was & will ALWAYS be Joe Zawinul's band. He surrounds himself with talent, so all eras were great. There's something about Joe's harmony that penetrates so deeply. "Second Sunday In August" is another great example.
I got this album for Christmas when in 10th grade. Best present ever, it literally changed my life. WEATHER REPORT has been my favorite band for over 30 years with ZAWINUL my #1 musician and composer. BUT this song is my favorite song. Not favorite jazz, or even WEATHER REPORT song BUT song period. Although BROWN STREET did beat it for about a year! BUT this is #1 again. Thanks for the post and the high quality. IT IS VERY APPRECIATED.
What a first track! I'm sure I'm not the only one who took the album home, whacked it on the record player and......(no sound)....volume up.....and up......whoooosh!
this album and the one before it, Sweetnighter, were WR at their shimmering best. Alphonso Johnson sounded more R&B than his successor and (dare i say it) fitted this music perfectly rather than swamping it IMO. A happiness descends upon me whenever i hear this majestic music. these two albums i take with me...
@RufusT9 -yep, I too think that this is their best album even though everybody loves the Jaco period. This album achieves what is so rare in fusion-that the finished 'whole' is so much more than the sum of it's parts. I get the same thing with Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Visions of the emerald beyond'-awesome yet foot-tappingly accesible. I went to a Santana concert in the 80's and was pleasantly surprised to see Alphonso on bass and Buddy Miles singing-what a bonus-though Buddy seemed a bit high!
@RufusT9 - I'm with you on those two albums Rufus T9. Absolutely love Mysterious Traveller and Sweetnighter and can still listen to them over and over - whenever I get the urge - without getting sick of them. Actually still use them to rev me up and get me feeling upbeat and ready to go. I love ALL tracks on these two albums but probably my two faves from the first time I heard them are Nubian Sundance and Boogie Woogie Waltz. Anyway , enjoy.
It was a great listen with the headphones back then and, ummm, you know, but who ever knew that they'd reach the heights they did back then? Airto Moriera just visited USF in Tampa and we spoke of this album. What memories!
For me the Best album from Weather Report JAzz Fusion World Mysterious Traveller. So much great Musicians - Alphonso Johnson / bass - Don Um Romao / percussion, drum ( Brazilian RIP Don ! ) - Wayne Shorter / soprano & tenor saxophones, tac piano - Miroslav Vitous / bass (2) - Ishmael Wilburn / drums - Joe Zawinul / acoustic & electric pianos, synth, kalimba, organ, tamboura, clay drums, tac piano, melodica ( Chzec RIP Joe ! )
Fantastic Track.....Great Group. Zawinul (RIP) was a Genius. ....Wayne Shorter as well.......Very talented Musicians, all of them........Incredible drumming.........
they always had such offbeat intros, I guess thats what made them stand out, what a phenomenal band they were...the melodies were incredible and unique
@wsee YES it is.I agree ! I used to debate this all the time with a former coworker. People give 'Heavy Weather' more praise because of 'Birdland' and Jaco P's presence. It is a good album but 'Mysterious Traveller' is definitely the more adventurous and atmospheric of the two.Much of this album has an otherworldly feel which isn't as present on subsequent releases with the possible exception of 'Black Market'.Jaco P.was clearly a great talent, but I think most of their best work came earlier.
@TRANZEURO --Mysterious Traveller is from another dimension, man--it's music made by aliens on another world, across the Milky Way, light years away......it is literally "out of this world".
@TRANZEURO@TRANZEURO --absolutely agree! Anyone with an ear (an ability to listen to the song as a whole, total experience, rather than the piecemeal selection of a certain players role--when that happens, the listener does not truly grasp the intention of the composition) knows that the earlier Weather Report was superior. Jaco joining shifted the focal point of the band from a true group to that of a group with a featured, or star, player. Although still excellent, they lost the magic.
Zawinul was hospitalized He died from a rare form of skin cancer ()september 11, 2007
By 1970, Shorter along with keyboardist Joe Zawinul formed the fusion group Weather Report. The other original members were bassist Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira, and drummer Alphonse Mouzon. After Vitous' departure in 1973 Shorter and Zawinul co-led the group until the band's break-up in late 1985. evolutionary bassist Jaco Pastorius)
One of the greastest groups of all time! Those two drummers playin' at the same time was awesome. Zawinul is so on top of it all. World music .. like a BIG dog! Percussion ... Alphonso on bass! Takes you to the Sahara! Blow your face out!
It IS arguably their best album! Back then, fans and critics were totally 'united' on that.
Weather Report is my No 1 of all time! But only till 1976. Still, tones of amazing music. I can't find anything from Sweetnighter (except Miroslav's Will, which is one of my least favorite), Tale Spinnin (Five Short Stories!!!)
man...i seen them in pitts ,pa..in 1974 @ the old Stanley Theatre.standin' room only..they opened up with this song..a dear friend of mine "hipped" me 2 the album.and wala..2 weeks later?..here they are..truly unforgettable. greg, thom, and big inky..from new brighton pa.
they opened with this in pitss,pa 1974..audio was "whacked"..zawinuks keys werent workin & he was pointin at a roadie ..then all hell broke lose inna bout 45 seconds, kiched azz jack
