50 serial killers a year? I understand it's a populous country but why are there so many of them in the US? In Finland there are only 5 million people but to this day there hasn't been a serial killer in recorded history. Sure, it's easier for the police to catch murderers in a country the size of Minnesota but still... Any theories?
@one4455 You're right. Haapoja committed several murders in the 19th century. Nykopp was a quite recent case. While working as a nurse, she killed five of her patients by drugging them. Doctors concluded she had an antisocial personality disorder with several psychopathic elements. There was also a third one, Ismo Junni, who killed his wife and four men in the 1980s. He got a life sentence.

@RehabNemesis It still is a lot and I feel bad for the victims. Even though in principle I'm against the death penalty, in cases like these I'm reconsidering my view on it. Oh, btw, researches have suggested that the reasons for the relatively small amount of serial killers in Finland (three) are both the small population and the effectiveness of local and national law enforcement agencies.
It seems that it is actually a mixture of nature and early years nurture that determines whether someone will become a serial killer. I believe people are born with the potential to become a SK, but it takes a combination of factors to allow that propensity to develop.
i give ressler credit. he must be a very stable man to be able to see what he does and have to look for these killers. what he see's and has to read is so terrible..and thankfully we have him to help us catch killers. i can't imagine doing what he does.

I notice that nobody ever focuses on the fact that the victims are almost always women. Why are we still in so much denial? Probably because if we acknowledge that, it would lead us to the conclusion that there is something pathologically wrong with men in general, only exacerbated in some individuals. Of course, everyone is going to disagree, but this is my opinion nonetheless.

I know we men are more aggressive and deal with our mental health far less effectively than women due to the stigma men still place on seeking help, but when you look to murders committed against those whom both sexes are far physically superior to and hold positions of power over, their kids, then men and women do pretty much 50/50 of the killing.
If women weren't weaker than us they would be in positions to act out violent fantasies far more often.

Today, most crimes are perpetrated with the use of firearms, which doesn't require physical strength. Poisoning the victim is another possibility. I still think that the aggressive obsession with the female body and the fantasy of destroying it is typically male. On the other hand, women have more self-destructive behaviors.

@one4455 You're right. Haapoja committed several murders in the 19th century. Nykopp was a quite recent case. While working as a nurse, she killed five of her patients by drugging them. Doctors concluded she had an antisocial personality disorder with several psychopathic elements. There was also a third one, Ismo Junni, who killed his wife and four men in the 1980s. He got a life sentence.

It seems that it is actually a mixture of nature and early years nurture that determines whether someone will become a serial killer. I believe people are born with the potential to become a SK, but it takes a combination of factors to allow that propensity to develop.

I notice that nobody ever focuses on the fact that the victims are almost always women. Why are we still in so much denial? I know we men are more aggressive and deal with our mental health far less effectively than women due to the stigma men still place on seeking help, but when you look to murders committed against those whom both sexes are far physically superior to and hold positions of power over, their kids, then men and women do pretty much 50/50 of the killing.
If women weren't weaker than us they would be in positions to act out violent fantasies far more often.

@Chousakan In a way, you could be right, but I don't think that physical strength explains anything. Today, most crimes are perpetrated with the use of firearms, which doesn't require physical strength. Poisoning the victim is another possibility. I still think that the aggressive obsession with the female body and the fantasy of destroying it is typically male. On the other hand, women have more self-destructive behaviors.

@axilea67 You hit it right on the nail We destroy ourselves because we know we have little chance of ever winning a physical fight with a bigger, stronger(and usually practiced in fighting, and maybe even trained for combat, and are often crazed by drugs and or alcohol or jealousy or fear of losing control) male!! Women who DO kill their abusive partners are almost always charged with murder and sentenced to a life in prison. Often they get pardoned. Or decide "ANYTHING'S better than him".

@Chousakan Little girls are conditioned from birth to be weak and gentle and helpless, and to look to men to be "saved". This is slowly changing. But there is something in some men that makes them become transfixed by females - more pretty than not - to the point that they must overpower them and "consume" them. It can be uncontrollable and I suspect it's related to hormones or an emasculating mother or whatever. Pathology isn't easy to explain.Strength is good. Sick longings and actions aren;t
