The original tune was used in the English civil war (1645). Used by the Irish in 18th Century. Taken to USA in 19th century and published. Used by loads of bands in 20th Century, final finding it's rightful home in 2012 with Anglo Saxon.
the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump - we got some flyin' to do.
the Union(northern states that opposed slavery) were fighting against the southern states to abolish slavery and the southern states tried to separate and form their own country but the Union fought(and won) to keep the country together and abolished slavery
this didnt really stop the racism in the country but it was a step in the right direction
@thatlemondude Basically, slavery as an institution was allowed by the state, until our president Lincoln was elected. Because he was an slavery abolitionist, amongst other things, he came to the conclusion that war was the only thing that could solve the problems between the north and the south. This was a huge ideological battle, it was over so much more than slavery. And the north (USA) eventually won, because of superior logistics and greater numbers. Horrific war though.
This tune was originally a war protest written by the Irish while fighting to establish the British Empire in India. Now it is a rallying call for young men to go fight, kill and die.
@Gingerfacer "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye" wasn't a *war* protest song so much as an anti-recruitment song, and a attack on those who would involve themselves in wars that have nothing to do with them for the sole purpose of attaining glory in battle.
Wars are sometimes unavoidable. This one manages to avoid glorifying the combat itself and focusing on the moment that everyone really longs for: the moment the war is over and our loved ones return home.
@Gingerfacer When Johnny Comes Marching Home is an anti-war song...the lyrics reflect the mood of the families and friends of those fighting and wanting to have them return safely, preferably in victory so their losses were not in vain.
@45BigBoss45 I'm not, no. My father was, my brothers both were, both of my grandfathers and I plan to be when I'm older. Being in the military runs in the family.
@Litterboxer529 My grandfather was also in the Somme. 1st battalion, The Essex Regiment. He was also in the first day of the Gallipolli landings in 1915. Luckily he survived the war, otherwise I would not be here now. Tough men for tough times. I wish we were like them. Kind regards,
@MCYoung1969 i have a cousin that fought in ww1 im not sure where he fought but his little brothers joined the army airborne core and were in operation overlord and operation huskey
@drillerblue35 Now that's a very narrow way to look at things...do you really want to be "Feared" that much? Do you know what happens to countries who attempt to thrive on fear, they fall eventually. Due to their greed and insolence.
@GrandReaper6713 When the federal government pushes one step to far.. you had bettter believe it will. I guess people give a rats ass about the Constitution these days as long as they can rub their ego cause "the north won". It was a good victory for ending slavery but it was NOT a good victory in protecting the people from a oppressive federal government. LIve free or die. Dont let the government make you its Bitch.
@ambigroove Odd that you should say that because more than one state objected to Richmond's interference in it's affairs. Oppressive? What about Unionist East Tennessee being denied the same rights that Richmond claimed for itself?
Littleboxer529's great-grandfather was probably Canadian. One of my great-great grandfathers was naturalized American, but enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force because he thought it would prove his loyalty to Canada and help him advance in their society. At the time, Jews had a hard time in certain parts of America. There were Americans at the Somme in foreign forces!
My great-grandfather from another line actually fought for Austria-Hungary.
whats does this song and ghost riders in the sky have in common they are both ageless and unless our taste in songs changes rapidly they will continue so for all eternaty.
I can't listen this without stupid grin on my face, because i always remember the words from a finnish kids song "captain hook"
Captain Hook was a cruel man, hooray, hooray. He knew the best fishing places, hooray, hooray. He cleaned all the turkey bones and to his skull flag he wiped his mouth, he was the horror of the seas that captain at his times...
@BorisGodunov True it is a song originating in America, but it's not a song about Americans, it's a song about the hope of the soldiers in battle come marching home to be with their families.
Im doing a school project on Dixie, John Brown's Body and this song. Im also going to preform this song on my trumpet in class. Listening to this song has helped a lot.
@jimbosaurus This isn't a Union song, it's an American song. Both sides sang it. With the same lyrics. It's from the Irish drinkin' song "Johnny, I Hardly Knew You"
@pen24 That was my mistake. I was making comments on the video I made for Battle Hymn of the Republic and had that on my mind. The Battle Hymn is what Colorado and Georgia both adapted. I'd be very surprised if it hasn't been used at sporting events in the US, UK and in Ireland.
@Litterboxer529 I say thanks to your great-Grandpa and to all the soldiers fighting for our freedom. Can we please have some peace soon? I am weary of all the war. My little brother lost his best friend whom he has known since he was 6-7 years old, lost to the effort in the Helmand Province - Afghanistan.
It's all about propaganda, getting men to go off to a war they might not come back from. I think that's why people would dislike this song... A perfect example is the song "Over There" (A.K.A Johnny Get Your Gun).
I am proud to be a freaking AMERICAN! Hooah! May the creator be with our men and women over seas and may he bless the ground which we live upon. Since colonial days to present days we are "the" blessed nation!
@spenceleeisback Jajajaja I understand what you are saying. I´m Argentine and I like very much this song. And I think that this may make Americans to fell the same way we Argentines fell when we hear rather the Anthem or the march of San Lorenzo Combatt, "La Marcha de San Lorenzo".
@zappbrannigan420 I said Creator, not the god of the abrahamic religions. Lets just listen to the patriotic music instead of bring up religions. Ty :)
ok its obvious that johnny i hardly knew ye came first. as much as i would like to believe america wins in this one (the pat i am) its well known that the irish version came first
@jonde1123 It's an amazing song and it's not possible for a man not to love it. I'm from Bulgaria we also du have such marches..well the are not the same but day make your blood go wild!so..so nothing strange that this one is still so loved.
It's funny how an anti-war song was made into a pro-war song and then the pro-war song is used by many modern bands to express an anti-war message. (e.g. The Clash, Guns 'n' Roses)
@qlight I disagree. There's nothing distinctly "American" or "Northern" OR "Southern" in the lyrics. What it defines is the military family and the "home front".
The minor key to this song has always struck me. You have the lyrics repeatedly asserting that the son is coming back, he's coming back, he's coming back... But always the minor tune threatening that he might NOT come marching home. It gives you a window into the family of a soldier, proud of what he's doing and terrified at the possibility they well and truly face. Really forward thinking in so many ways.

It's funny how an anti-war song was made into a pro-war song and then the pro-war song is used by many modern bands to express an anti-war message. (e.g. The Clash, Guns 'n' Roses)

this song and its lyrics define USA

@qlight I disagree. There's nothing distinctly "American" or "Northern" OR "Southern" in the lyrics. What it defines is the military family and the "home front".

The minor key to this song has always struck me. You have the lyrics repeatedly asserting that the son is coming back, he's coming back, he's coming back... But always the minor tune threatening that he might NOT come marching home. It gives you a window into the family of a soldier, proud of what he's doing and terrified at the possibility they well and truly face. Really forward thinking in so many ways.

@klebmo, Amen, I'm the son of a Coastie, so I know how it feels. He used to be away from home for at least a hundred days or so.
