  • the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump - we got some flyin' to do.

  • thumbs up if Jib Jab brought you here

  • I am english, and I don't know much about this, can someone explain about the union and the south to me. Thnx

  • @thatlemondude

the Union(northern states that opposed slavery) were fighting against the southern states to abolish slavery and the southern states tried to separate and form their own country but the Union fought(and won) to keep the country together and abolished slavery

this didnt really stop the racism in the country but it was a step in the right direction

  • @thePoetsTime

    kwl. thnx :)

  • @thatlemondude Basically, slavery as an institution was allowed by the state, until our president Lincoln was elected. Because he was an slavery abolitionist, amongst other things, he came to the conclusion that war was the only thing that could solve the problems between the north and the south. This was a huge ideological battle, it was over so much more than slavery. And the north (USA) eventually won, because of superior logistics and greater numbers. Horrific war though.

  • I wonder if johnny ever did come marching home....or he marched straight to the battle of gettysburg.

  • Makes me feel like a true american patriot. And i'm from Norway and have never been to the states.

  • UNION FOREVER!

  • This tune was originally a war protest written by the Irish while fighting to establish the British Empire in India. Now it is a rallying call for young men to go fight, kill and die.

  • @Gingerfacer "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye" wasn't a *war* protest song so much as an anti-recruitment song, and a attack on those who would involve themselves in wars that have nothing to do with them for the sole purpose of attaining glory in battle.

Wars are sometimes unavoidable. This one manages to avoid glorifying the combat itself and focusing on the moment that everyone really longs for: the moment the war is over and our loved ones return home.

  • @Gingerfacer "instead focuses", I should have wrote.

  • @Gingerfacer When Johnny Comes Marching Home is an anti-war song...the lyrics reflect the mood of the families and friends of those fighting and wanting to have them return safely, preferably in victory so their losses were not in vain.

  • Millist reaalsust Sa ise tahad? Kas minu unelmate tõelus, vähemalt üks laps, ühine argipäev, oleks see peale surutud?

  • Special gift for the union : ..i..

  • for the union!!

  • this should be the american national anthem sounds way more badass.

  • @koreathreekingdoms Badass? It's a song of mourning. Sad, very sad and beautiful.

  • @lehtorja Well, this version projects a very different kind of feeling, of victory or something more epic.

  • @koreathreekingdoms naw ill stick with the star spangled banner, it was also a war-time song written as underdogs against the mighty british

  • Greate song for greate people!!!!

  • Johnny, I hardly knew ya...

  • Why do I feel the relentless need to swing a sword by listening to this?!?!?!

  • is that flute or piccolo? Prob Piccolo

  • my school bands playing this! WAHOO!

  • lovely song it shall do on forever

  • GOD BLESS THE UNION, the South will never rise again!

  • @Litterboxer529 are you a real soldier?

  • @45BigBoss45 I'm not, no. My father was, my brothers both were, both of my grandfathers and I plan to be when I'm older. Being in the military runs in the family.

  • @Litterboxer529 i would like to be a soldier to but only to defend my country

  • does anyone else think that this song should be used in metal gear solid games to?

  • I like Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye better....

  • @Litterboxer529

Brilliant stuff - i bow my hat to your great - grandpa . I hope you are as proud as his journal excerpt makes me feel.

  • @scruga NP...GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! UNION & CONFEDERATE!!!

  • @scruga NP GOD BLESS AMERICA ε☺...UNION & CONFEDERATE!! :3

  • this song doesnt work on a mobile device for some reason

  • i whistle this song everywhere, and my friend thinks im weird :( but i like this song

  • @Litterboxer529 must of been a moment to remember and a event to forget

  • @jantiification Those Wacky Nazis

  • we have one EPIC song.

  • incredible

  • It's a really good song, almost as good as Dixie.

  • is it the same music of die hard 3?

  • @Archj86 indeed it is ^^

  • Black Lagoon Brought Me here.

  • @animesol

    same here

    roberta's blood trail is awsome

  • @dethonius I guess I'm not the only one who knew this song but forgot and remembered through Roberta's Blood Trail. LOL

  • @animesol Yeah, just finished watching the last OVA. Pretty awesome, slightly digressing from the manga.

  • usa all the way we are coming back we are 1number 1 in the world

  • i bet you more than 50% of any atheist still love this song lol

  • @giantsdudeful Why do you say that. This doesn't have any reference to religion that I can hear.

  • @Litterboxer529 fuckin nazis after that im sure he wanted revenge

  • @catkiller60 Thats where his sons came in (my grandpa and great uncles)

  • 1:51 James Headfield's grandpa??

  • @Debbie321lopez LOL!

  • i like this song

  • @Litterboxer529 My grandfather was also in the Somme. 1st battalion, The Essex Regiment. He was also in the first day of the Gallipolli landings in 1915. Luckily he survived the war, otherwise I would not be here now. Tough men for tough times. I wish we were like them. Kind regards,

  • @MCYoung1969 i have a cousin that fought in ww1 im not sure where he fought but his little brothers joined the army airborne core and were in operation overlord and operation huskey

  • all hail the red white and blue we kick ass we are the number 1 feared nation in the world ur either with us or against us

  • @drillerblue35 Now that's a very narrow way to look at things...do you really want to be "Feared" that much? Do you know what happens to countries who attempt to thrive on fear, they fall eventually. Due to their greed and insolence.

  • @Raiks I would not equate the temper of an entire nation from the response of one youtube poster.

  • @rexlibris99 Yes, if your view of humanity is based on anonymous fools on the internet you'll lose faith in humanity.

  • When little Jimmy come marchin home horah hoorah

R truth were singing this on WWE Wearing a confederate uniform with this song in the background

  • usa all the way . boys red white and blue stands forever

  • Wasn't the original written in the 1790s? I know there is some dispute... but I think that's part of what makes both versions interesting.

  • @Litterboxer529 Thats friggin awesome man. Your great-grandpa is da Man! :D

  • Y todavía así se atrevieron a odiar a los Irlandeses, desgraciados americanos, después de la cultura que les trajeron.

  • i wish people in the south would give up the south isnt going to rise up again just give up

  • @GrandReaper6713 Not to mention the Civil War's been over for almost 150 years!

  • @GrandReaper6713 When the federal government pushes one step to far.. you had bettter believe it will. I guess people give a rats ass about the Constitution these days as long as they can rub their ego cause "the north won". It was a good victory for ending slavery but it was NOT a good victory in protecting the people from a oppressive federal government. LIve free or die. Dont let the government make you its Bitch.

  • @ambigroove Odd that you should say that because more than one state objected to Richmond's interference in it's affairs. Oppressive? What about Unionist East Tennessee being denied the same rights that Richmond claimed for itself?

  • @GrandReaper6713

And if it ever does rise up again, I know that many, MANY people who even live in the South will fight for this Great Union once more!

  • @GrandReaper6713 Of course, most of the south is overrun with us mexicans (:

  • @GrandReaper6713 You are an idiot, I am British and I even think you are an idiot.

  • Austria-Hungary.

    daaam :D

  • Inspiring as hell, makes me want to stand up and salute the U.S of A! :D

  • too bad that no american forces were in somme or was your grandpa english?

  • @NoobSnoopy,

Littleboxer529's great-grandfather was probably Canadian. One of my great-great grandfathers was naturalized American, but enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force because he thought it would prove his loyalty to Canada and help him advance in their society. At the time, Jews had a hard time in certain parts of America. There were Americans at the Somme in foreign forces!

My great-grandfather from another line actually fought for Austria-Hungary.

  • @NonyALBieber no im hearing this in 1862

  • whats does this song and ghost riders in the sky have in common they are both ageless and unless our taste in songs changes rapidly they will continue so for all eternaty.

  • I love this march and hope, that we play it once in our corps.

  • I can't listen this without stupid grin on my face, because i always remember the words from a finnish kids song "captain hook"

Captain Hook was a cruel man, hooray, hooray. He knew the best fishing places, hooray, hooray. He cleaned all the turkey bones and to his skull flag he wiped his mouth, he was the horror of the seas that captain at his times...

  • @Litterboxer529 Why would anyone be singing an American song after a battle in which Americans didn't fight?

  • @BorisGodunov I don't really think nationality would matter at that point, and the song was so old, that it really was a classic.

  • @BorisGodunov Because they all liked the song?

  • @BorisGodunov cus Americans kick ass ^_^

  • @BorisGodunov True it is a song originating in America, but it's not a song about Americans, it's a song about the hope of the soldiers in battle come marching home to be with their families.

  • @rexlibris99 actuallly this song is a rip off of the irish song, Johnny i hardley knew ya, which was an anti-recruitment song written BEFORE this one

  • Im doing a school project on Dixie, John Brown's Body and this song. Im also going to preform this song on my trumpet in class. Listening to this song has helped a lot.

    :)

  • I was searching this since forever and i found it

i don't why but my friends think i am weird for liking it .all day yesterday i was humming it and everyone was like "WHAT THE"

  • @rexlibris99 - They also adopted 'Battle Hymn of the Republic,' which is a Union marching song as well.

  • @jimbosaurus This isn't a Union song, it's an American song. Both sides sang it. With the same lyrics. It's from the Irish drinkin' song "Johnny, I Hardly Knew You"

  • @evilkillerwhale Read the intro material.

  • the instrumental version by the usmab is an awesome rendition of the quintessential civil war tune - thanks rexlibris99

  • es buena...lo es,,,la buesque por muxos lados

  • es buena...

  • Im not american but this song just floats with proudness and courage and i love it!

  • Fernando Torres Liverpool's number 9 !!

  • @rexlibris99

That's interesting since Georgia fought for the South. If I remember, this is a Union song.

  • @pen24 It's traditionally an Irish song though if I remember right....I believe its called Johnny, I hardly knew ya...

  • @alexamerling20 Yeah!!!!

  • @pen24 That was my mistake. I was making comments on the video I made for Battle Hymn of the Republic and had that on my mind. The Battle Hymn is what Colorado and Georgia both adapted. I'd be very surprised if it hasn't been used at sporting events in the US, UK and in Ireland.

  • @Litterboxer529 I say thanks to your great-Grandpa and to all the soldiers fighting for our freedom. Can we please have some peace soon? I am weary of all the war. My little brother lost his best friend whom he has known since he was 6-7 years old, lost to the effort in the Helmand Province - Afghanistan.

  • @FoxvoxDK My brothers were both in Iraq/Afghanistan a while ago. My youngest brother just got back.

  • @Litterboxer529 Thanks to your great-grandfather and all the others who fought to keep us free. God Bless America!

  • This is a bad ass song.

  • The instrumental makes me want to be piloting a B-52 in a cowboy hat.

  • beautiful stretch of between 24 and 45 seconds

  • Haha die hard 3, awesome!

  • @Litterboxer529 that seriously moved me...my 11 year old wanted to hear this song, claims it is one of his faves:)

  • Thanks for the link to the song, I totally bought it!

  • @Litterboxer529 u should proud of ur great grandfather! Even he's my hero!

  • @gooserkaa I am, he died in 87' though :(

  • does any one else think this should be played by a football band after a extremely close game

  • @dimitikoroslav i think thats a bit disrespectful to the troops who fought and died to play the song at a football game

  • @dimitikoroslav hell ya man

  • @dimitikoroslav this song is actually chanted by a soccer team liverpool look it up "Torres Song"

  • @dimitikoroslav i do

  • THIS SONG I SO EPIC!

  • @Litterboxer529 Fucking epic.

  • i love this song

  • It's all about propaganda, getting men to go off to a war they might not come back from. I think that's why people would dislike this song... A perfect example is the song "Over There" (A.K.A Johnny Get Your Gun).

  • Nah more likely they're yellowbellied turncoat communists who would rather surrender their freedom than fight for it.

  • why or how could anyone dislike this

  • 01:49 : Who's this man ?

  • @Briselance he kinda looks like my uncle

  • @sonyadavis10

Hey, who knows ? Maybe he's a grand-grand-grand-father of yours.

  • I am proud to be a freaking AMERICAN! Hooah! May the creator be with our men and women over seas and may he bless the ground which we live upon. Since colonial days to present days we are "the" blessed nation!

  • @spenceleeisback Jajajaja I understand what you are saying. I´m Argentine and I like very much this song. And I think that this may make Americans to fell the same way we Argentines fell when we hear rather the Anthem or the march of San Lorenzo Combatt, "La Marcha de San Lorenzo".

  • @spenceleeisback Actually Israel is, however, as the book says, "Those who bless Israel I will bless, those who curse Israel, I will curse."

  • @zappbrannigan420 I said Creator, not the god of the abrahamic religions. Lets just listen to the patriotic music instead of bring up religions. Ty :)

  • @spenceleeisback Except same guy, so yeah, don't want to hear aboot God, don't bring up the Creator.

  • God Bless America

  • 44 commies dislike this video

  • 43 rednecks disliked this video

  • when I hear this song think that I love USA

  • Johnny is home and puts some tremendous music on

  • such a sad song

  • ok its obvious that johnny i hardly knew ye came first. as much as i would like to believe america wins in this one (the pat i am) its well known that the irish version came first

  • Goosebumps.

  • I'm going to Pennsylvania this April to visit Penn State University.

It's a shame I can't visit Gettysburg since that was the turning point of the Civil War.

I wish the war had never happened. So many innocent lives lost, and so many others ruined.

  • me gusta mucho esta cancion.

  • i used this song as a running cadence. I just changed a few lyrics. Highly motivational!

  • war sucks

  • Fkn Epic.

  • o how funny my last names Gilmore :D

  • its funny how a old song is still loved in the present day so much :D

  • @jonde1123 It's an amazing song and it's not possible for a man not to love it. I'm from Bulgaria we also du have such marches..well the are not the same but day make your blood go wild!so..so nothing strange that this one is still so loved.

  • God Bless America

  • this song and its lyrics define USA

  • @qlight I disagree. There's nothing distinctly "American" or "Northern" OR "Southern" in the lyrics. What it defines is the military family and the "home front".

  • @TaintedMustard

indeed, since it was a irish/british to begin with.. also see, johnny i hardly knew ye

  • andy carroll liverpool's number 9

  • The minor key to this song has always struck me. You have the lyrics repeatedly asserting that the son is coming back, he's coming back, he's coming back... But always the minor tune threatening that he might NOT come marching home. It gives you a window into the family of a soldier, proud of what he's doing and terrified at the possibility they well and truly face. Really forward thinking in so many ways.

  • @klebmo, Amen, I'm the son of a Coastie, so I know how it feels. He used to be away from home for at least a hundred days or so.

  • @klebmo The last 7 notes of when johnny comes marching home are the first 7 notes of the theme from COMBAT/

  • this song is the best pro-war song ever

  • I'm a redneck and but I'm not pro-confederate.

  • all of u shut up the good ole red white an blue is on her way back . we are the usa land of the free home of of the brave we kick ass all the way
