That is soooo cool! how much does the ground breaker end up costing once ur done? I would love to try this but I wouldn't want to spend too much money on them.
How many layers of mache do you put on these awesome groundbreakers? What do you recommend for sealing? I'm assuming a spray works best to get into the voids. How many coats?
Your technique is fantastic and your videos are VERY helpful. I'm just about finished with one groundbreaker and already I wish I would have started earlier so I could build more before the big day this year.
@ourvids4u Thank you! It varies depending on the size of the prop and what style I'm going for, but it's usually around two to three layers. First layer provides coverage of the entire body, then the next two are for details. I don't currently seal my props since I only display them on Halloween night, but many haunters use a sealant on their mache (prior to painting) like Thompson's Water Seal.
Thank you so much for your kind message. I'm glad the videos are helpful. Happy Halloween!
@chaz1031 Sorry I didn't include any info on music in the description, but I actually created all the music that plays during the time-lapse sequence myself using an audio editor/sampler. The software provides basic tracks and I mixed them and remixed 'em until I achieved the sound I wanted.
@gennova Thank you. I don't really feel like it's genius... rather I'm just pushing and tearing some paper towels until they finally look the way I want them to look. :0) But I so appreciate your kind comment!
LoL, you know John, NOW part of the Halloween ambiance for me is watching your HHR videos AGAIN......I'm just itchin for fall to arrive! I'm still floored at how detailed your work is, truly outstanding my friend.
Thank you so much LPF767. I'm glad the reality videos cause you to itch! ;) Keep an eye out - a new version of Halloween Haunter's Reality is coming soon - with a whole new twist.
Thanks for your comment. Spray painting a coat or two on first is definitely the best way to go, then I apply latex paint with brushes. I usually use two or three colors of latex: a base coat (on top of the spary paint) and then another color or two dry brushed on for high-lights and low-lights.
The dry brush is done exactly like it sounds - I use a dry 1/2 inch or 1 inch brush and dip it lightly in the paint, then I "smudge" it around on newspaper to take off any excess.
When spray painting, choose a color that is close to your final base coat latex color. If you go with a lighter color of spray paint and your prop/mache constricts; the lighter color will peek through the base coat of latex.
My next video is going to feature paint application, I'm just not sure when I'll have it ready to go, as I am going to build a brand new prop first, prior to filming the paint job.
Sorry if I missed it, but what materials did you use to build the frame for the body, arms, hands, rib cage, etc? Damn I love Halloween!!!. Too bad it's only one night a year. Thx.
When I get enough money,i'm gonna get a full bucky skeleton.I'm gonna cut off its legs and cover the bones so it looks like a reptile demon thing.I'm still not quite sure what to call it.
Thanks! I'm actually still adding texture to that corpse. I'm hoping to film the paint process in the next few days, but probably won't have the next Haunter's Reality video up until after Halloween.
I should have a final photo up, however, in the Season of Shadows Blog very soon.
I really like the nail head effect and the amount of time he spends on that finger, making sure it looks just so. I tell ya, he could do this professionally easily!
Thanks a lot! I get the old tunnel vision thing going and I don't stop until I'm satisfied with the detail work. :) I've already spent 30 to 40 hours on the prop in this video

Those nails and screws come in handy. :) I give them most of the credit for the texture!
