Did someone compare Bird and Parish to a drug addict rapist who happens to be the least clutch player in league history in C-Webb and a no hustle no heart never won anything center in Divac. Wowzers.
Jordan jockers will never get that Bird didn't even have to score 20 to dominate games. It's sort of ironic considering their affinity for Scottie Pippen.
And People say Kobe Bryant is better than Jordan? Please! Kobe isn't even better than Larry Bird. Kobe can take over a game, just by scoring. Larry can take over a game by doing many things, scoring, passing, rebounding, stealing, and hustling.
This is the game where the Celtics misfortune began. In this game a key reserve, Scott Wedman, suffered a career ending injury. While the Celtics were able to win the finals that year Wedman's injury was the a sign of bad things to come.
This is Bird at his best, no doubt, but lets not forget he's playing with 4 future hall-of famers (McHale, Parish, DJ, Walton)...easier to "dominate a game without taking a shot" when you're passing it to capable guys. Still, Bird was the truth.
This is one of my absolute favorite videos on youtube. When the analysts nowadays talk about how only a certain few people can dominate a game w/o taking many shots or scoring many pts, this would be the prototype. Bird absolutely dominated and put his stamp on this game right from the start with his passing, defense, hustle plays and rebounding. The entire Celtics team at that time were molded in his play: unselfishness, hustle, and teamwork... things that are very lacking in today's game.
You know you're watching something special when the announcers of the game can't control their enthusiasm and are yelling about a players performance. Bird did whatever the team needed to get the win. A rebounding machine, passes out of this world, diving for loose balls, 3 point bombs, clutch shots--nobody in the NBA has ever had this combination of skills and inspired their teammates to play like he did.
I could be wrong, but I thought Wedman suffered a broken rib in this game, not the heel injury that ended his career. He didn't play again in the '86 playoffs until he came in for some garbage minutes in Game 6 as Boston closed out Houston.
he was basically magic johnson, just a better scorer.
granted johnson was less injury prone, but tragic johnson was never really clutch at fuckin all.
bird was just, so beautiful to watch man. listen im a pretty good ball player no lie.
i used to play a TON of ball, and my lil cousin who is an avid fan said if i was in shape i could've been a starter on a college team (i'm 6-2, 190, pretty versatile).
i feel he & magic were the same players, magic just a better ball-handler & larry the purer shooter, THEY BOTH were tremendous scorers when they wanted 2 score ... i honestly feel they could have put-up jordan-like numbers if they wanted 2, but they played the game from the team aspect ... i don't believe n a goat but their r only a handful of players that i will even listen 2 the argument: magic, kareem, michael, mikan, wilt, shaq & larry ... nobody dominated their eras like these i just listed
Even though the Celtics won this game this is when their misfortune started. A key reserve of the bench, Scott Wedman. suffered a career ending injury and more bad luck quickly followed.

4:20 - That's a SF/PF leading a break and passing off to a PF/C on the break. Reminds me of the Webber/Divac combo in 02.

@TheDOLMET I agree. I would take Bird of Bryant without hesitation.

Probably the greatest passing game by Bird ever when considering the difficulty of the passes.

@captainvaritek You're right, only it was two ribs in game 3. With a healthy Wedman, it may have been a sweep or a 5-game finals.
