Such a tragic loss. I'd think the murder of his friend in Chile by Pinochets fascists put him on the very edge of wanting to continue. The most sensitive and insightful are the ones who are hardest put to merely survive.
it's a little to meandering feverishly stretching for a Dylan and not a strong enough melody at times and lyrically funny but maybe that is intentional and so I say Bracero I mean Well-done bravo ?? Sometimes it just knocks your socks off. But to say this is a masterpiece is nuts. The hammer was hard in the chrome of the car then we took off in a spin .. great line .. and all the highborn ladies sing Lou Reed's walk on the wild side.
@j6460887 I agree this one is amongst his very best....however since he was such a prolific writer thankfully there are several other 'masterpieces' out there from Phil.
Ghouma, thanks. This, for an old geezer, was a particularly treasured recollection of previous times, pretty much unavailable on cd, tape, vinyl or any other format. When it was 'removed' from Youtube a while ago I thought that was it and it was gone again for ever...fantastic that you've taken the trouble to post it again.
Thank you Ghouma for posting this masterpiece. I think you did a pretty good job matching the photos and art to the lyrics, without them I wouldn't have been able to understand most of what Phil was singing about. I think it is a sad lamentation of the dark side of U.S. history, the side not taught in schools nor the side that most don't want to think about.
Hey, does anyone have an Mp3 version they could send me? Also, Id say the song is about morality, and the quick way in which is has changed and will continually change. Thanks so much for posthing this Ghouma!!!
I have had the "Tape From California" LP forever and this was my favourite cut. He was always under-rated, I could never get people to listen to this album. I think he'd be better appreciated today, actually. It is poetry; it is genius. I must get a turntable! Thanks for posting this!!!
This is superb, I've never heard this song - I've got 3 or 4 other Phil Ochs albums (cds, you can find some of his stuff). Just pulled the lyrics up, but I have no idea on first reading/listening what it might be about.

Brilliant, depressing, exhilarating, exhausting. This amazing song is Phil Ochs in a nutshell.

This is one of Phil's most moving songs next to "Changes". It is just such a moving song.

Alas I have never seen this video but always admired his work!

All of Ochs' A&M albums, including "Tape From California", are currently out of print.
It's a shame that the later works of one of the greatest songwriters of the '60s are now nearly impossible to find.

if you search isohunt, com for phil ochs they have like 8 cds but its not legal.

There are worse things to do then downloading music, and most people do them every day.

This is great. I recently picked up the "Tape from California" LP lying around a friend's house and this song stood out.
Thanks for posting the video!

Ya, it does stand out. There are some other good songs on that album aswell (foremost; the war is over) but this one makes the album.
