I first realized I was gay in my 40s, came out at 48. I'm still best friends with my ex-wife, one of the most wonderful people in the world.
I treasure the years we spent together and the times we get to see one another (she lives in Chicago, I in Berlin). My regret is that I hurt her: I gained a new freedom in life to be who I am. She lost a marriage.
Had messages like yours circulated when I was your age, I might have realized my sexuality earlier, and not caused her that pain.
