As for Indy 4, it has some big story problems, but there's a lot of evidence that Spielberg hasn't lost the chops to make a great movie. The motorcycle chase is one of his best action scenes, and the way he shoots dialogue scenes, with wide shots, long takes, and precise camera movements show a level of class and craftsmanship unseen in modern blockbusters. Watch the early Peru scenes when Indy and Mutt first arrive, and tell me those were shot by a filmmaker who doesn't know what he's doing.
Frankly, he just needs better writers who can contribute new, modern, sharp ideas of their own, and keep some of his more extreme sentimental urges at bay. No more "yes men".
Tin Tin was written by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim) and Steven Moffat (Sherlock). War Horse was written by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Lee Hall (Billy Elliot). With that kind of talent at the writer's desk, I'm crossing my fingers for a true return to form this Christmas!
Thanks so much for posting this interview. "Indiana Jones 4" was bad. Very bad. But to look at the different films that Spielberg has directed, it is amazing that they all came from just one man.
IN November 2010, Spielberg confirmed that Daniel Day-lewis (who replaced Neeson when he pulled out) has been cast as Lincoln and that they would be shooting in Fall 2011 and that it will be released in fall of 2012. Spielberg was seen scouting for locations in Virginia in November as well. The script (by Kushner) is finished finally. I haven't heard yay or nay since.
I prefer his serious movies. They make much more sense and you could feel Spielberg's passion and his inspiration while in his populist movies they are hust crowd pleaser.
0:25 Click! KABOOM! The low end over LCR and partly S and LFE.1 scared the living daylights out of me. easy on the level Skywalker sound!
Not sure about Indiana Jones IV it sucked with lousy what the fuck end credits John Williams score that sounded so fucked up! Please don't screw up Indiana Jones V.
Indy 1 2 and 3 perfect sounding.
E.T. I think is his best in the innocence way it has scares cries that serves all ages.
Moviola cutting machine. I like 35mm film texture.
@MegaSpliffster It could be Steven has shown his top and when you show your top, you have nowhere else to go., which is the case with Indy IV it sucked 10 out of 10 I hardly play the bluray its that bad! I hope Indy V, well I think they should give it rest and should have stopped at Indy 3, because leave it to the audiences imagination, no need to spoil it with Indy IV.
Come on Speilberg, don't give us that shit about "the smell" of cutting on celluloid. The truth is he's afraid to become the student of digital editing, when he's the master of analogue editing. The benefits of non-linear computer editing are so vast that you would never rationally choose to cut by hand anymore, it's primitive. It's the same story for shooting on film. The old masters are afraid to become students again so they protest against video, which will match film in this decade.
very good personal interview. spielberg really talks about a lot of very personal things. especially when it comes to his religion and the critics of his movies. thanks for uploading
How on earth could they omit Minority Report? great movie - very good story, great futuristic designs, the effort put into designing seamless world for the characters to live in was really tremendous, much better than AI(mainly takes place indoors, the only effort they took to make it futuristic was to create ai teddy bear) or War of The Worlds, shame
I agree with frank1847.... you do talk absolute bollox. PAL and film run at 24 frames per second, which is what spielberg mentions. so whether you writing 34 is a typo or thats just what you think, your wrong. NTSC is 29.97 asswipe, haha....STOP PRETENDING!!!!
Other than thewse idiotic comments, great and inspiring documentary
It looks like Spielberg warmed to Kermode over the course of the interview. Kermode isn't an ass kisser, but he gave the man credit where it was due, and critcism where it was not. A very very good overview of his career.....
Good old filming standards, I have a book Adobe After Effects Studio Techniques a very interesting book, from an Image Engineering module I took in my degree year.
FPS I remember that from that module stands for Frames per second, 34 is the NTSC standard for America and a few others (UK and certain parts of Europe its PAL thats like 23 FPS), basically every second you'll have seen 24 frames flicked infront of you, when Ive done animation in 3D work, its a process of rendering each frame.
@jsmith19810808 You talk so much bollix it makes me sick. You know nothing you troll around looking for arguments.Just another nobody ah smith 24 frames my arse PAL you might kid these nice guys but not me.
Good old filming standards.?.. just how do YOU know ??? Who the fuck are YOU??? Hitchcock ??? naw your a nobody who trolls you tube looking for argument by pretending to be knowledgeable. When we both know you are a hotel porter. Get my bags boy....lol or should that be bum boy?
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was great, same comic book style, pure fun action that fueled the original three films, and the aliens were unexpected and welcome. People today, they think Indiana Jones is some kind of hardcore, realistic subject, but aliens are actually kinda right up Jones' alley; the magical ark of the covenant? voodoo stones and ripping out peoples heart effortlessly? The holy grail healing hounds and making people rapidly age? Whats so bad about aliens?
@Shaolin214 well i think that everyone would have wanted a movie that wasnt like most movies today..a movie that was more laid back and told a great story..i think an indiana jones movie about the Inca Empire or something like that..more history than aliens..by the way there was way too much CGI work in the crystal skull
Im glad to hear that E.T. is still his favourite, as it has been for as long as I can remember. I was ten in 1982 when it was released, id like to think to most perfect age to go watch it. It was the first movie I saw without my parents, the one I picked out. And it still is my favourite as well....the magic of this story never dies, God bless mr. Spielberg for giving me this special memory, and us this special movie :-))
@MountDoomPictures The other ones had good acting, some realism, and actual entertainment value. "Indy 4" was boring, tedious, and ridiculous! And the cast didn't have much chemistry, which made the whole film become emotionally cold. It was a complete failure.
@Transformers217 stop being such a pretentious critique, realism? ridiculous? emotional? you're watching fucking indy, it's suppose to be a popcorn adventure, indy 4 is the same as the other 3 indys. you're smiply follwing what every other baboon who pretend they knows a shit about filming and tries to find flaws about everything they see instead of seeing that film for what it is.
@long0800 How am I being pretentious? "Indiana Jones 4" was overly ridiculous, unrealistic, and absolutely stupid. It was also boring, repeatative, and overblown. It also had an over-usage of CGI, and it was way too long. Forget that the story was lame and laughably bad.
It's not the same as the first 3 "Indiana Jones" movies. Those films had realism, good acting, exciting, and real entertainment value. "Indy 4" sucked!
35mm is the original medium I like and prefer film texture because that is what cinema is about. Shame it ends DNR to death on video medium with EE edge enhancement that ruins its quality. I’m, not really a fan of digital cinema nor will I ever be 35/70mm rules.
@Transformers217 Opinion noted. But all I can say is "Wow." There are a certain amount of people who really feel let down by him. Fortunately, I am not one of them. I've always approached him with an open mind and have found him to be a remarkable filmmaker. Even when he's not at his best.
@8825TWO Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of all time, and he's definitely one of the most successful filmmakers in history.
I just think that he missed the mark with "Indiana Jones 4." And it's not the first time that he hasn't done a good film. Hopefully, his next film will be great.
@Transformers217 I thought the alien approach to it was so weak and suprisingly unoriginal of him, I mean, E.T, A.E, Close Encounters of the third kind, come on Steven! I totally agree!
Harrison Ford is too old to be running around or least in short take that are edited together to make it look like his in his early 40’s this, isn’t the 80’s no more its 2000’s or 2000 and what ever. Ford is too old to be playing Indiana Jones now. Its like footballers once they reach their 40’s game over you start to slow down; you’re no longer in your prime, time for retirement.
I enjoyed all 6 parts of this interview... To me Spielberg just shows in my generation how magical the film process can be.. Whether it be light entertainment,,,or a film that shows the depths of some very serious topics...Spielberg is one of the utmost examples flaws included,,, of what awesome film making can do to the human spirit. May he live for another 60 years...
Me too. It was a very good interview and Steven seems very relaxed and comfortable. I think it's nice he shares his feelings with the audience. Always nice to hear what kind of man is in the director's chair.
