It's amazing how small the original breadbox mini's really were. My Mazda 5 is almost a half a foot longer than the classic T-body van. Heck, my parents new 1964 Dodge Dart was even bigger! we had a '95 caravan. It did it's job with little complaint. Tampa area seems to be where they are all going to die. I see tons of them still in various states of returning to dust...
You don't see too many of the early 1st generation's around anymore, I liked the 1987-90 style 1st generation's the best, about a year ago I've seen a cargo van with a 5 speed manual, were the majority of these vans built with automatics?
@Doobie1975 i got a '90, to be exact...Date of Mfg. 9/89... so I guess it's a '90. But yeah, they are extremely rare, and I've probably only seen 10 or so.
...now ...WTF did I say!!! ...hmmm? ...ONLY Communists preach revolution... HA?! ...fucken REDNECKS... and their always conspiring to overthrow the government ...HA?! ...and they NEVER pay their TAXES... HA?! ...and that's why their mad... HA?! ...and since they NEVER paid taxes... then NO unemployment for them ...HA?! ...hehehe...
My neighbor has a 84 dodge caravan LE I should take a video of it sometime but the vans not worth anything the paint is weather beat and the tired are low
I have owned 23 of them, still have my 2 1984 Caravans and my 1985 Caravan with wood. I collected all on these Chrysler made minivans over the years. All brochures, models, all magazines that contain the articles, MW road tests, dealer promo items, pics, you name it, if it was on the Caravan or Voyager I have it. Took over 14 years to find it all. Where did you get this footage and can you send it to me? I would love to add this to my collection (a file). Thanks and thanks for sharing
Las mas veterenas y la mama de todas las minivans; yo0 tengo una grand caravan 1991 y aun me emocio0no cuando la manejo... podriamos concluir que el que tiene un modelo0 de eso0 es por que tiene una classica!!!
Great Mini Vans my familly has had three they all get 620 Kilometers out of a tank of gas highway and 596 city..personally when I am able to afford to purchase a vehicle it will be a caravn even though i dont have children learned to drive on one wont drive anything else
yeah back then computer design wasn't very developed so really the best way of designing stuff was just to make it boxy since that was easy to draw i guess.
Indeed people "never seen anything like it" minivans very new back in 1984. btw, that reminds me, I used to have a 1984 Dodge Caravan Matchbox toy car when I was a kid.
The new Caravans don't get that kind of gas mileage. This one probably had the 4 cylinder in it. The Caravans and the K-Cars are what saved the Chrysler motor company. They were part of the Lee Iacocca brainchild.
Have you ever heard the joke about why the Caravans with the 2.2 liter engine all had 7 seats?...so the remaining 6 people could get out & push it uphill!
@palebeachbum it was 86 hp to start out with, it rose to 93 in 1986 when fuel injection was added as an option, although the caravan and voyager retained the carburator and fuel injection was added for 1987
The MPG were very inflated in car commercials back then. I think Ford said the Escort got over 50mpg in their commercials. I'm assuming they tested cars' fuel economy different back then. It's MUCH more accurate now, if not a bit harsh.
Really? My dads 1989 caravan broke down with only 20000 miles because of a defect transmission. The starter went out at around 35000 miles. After that, he got rid of it.
They tried and failed. The Astro was a work van disguised as a family van. I love those vans but under all the plush carpet and captains chairs, its a work van.
Dodge, an American "revolution?" Isn't that overstating things just a tad?

My mom had a gold dust 1st gen Caravan from 1986. She had it since new, but unfortunately wrecked 11 years after. :(
Those 1st gens are hard to come by these days. I like the 1st gens too.

They all had 4-cylinder engines for the first few years. Either a Chrysler-built 2.2 liter or a Mitsubishi-built 2.6 liter.

2.2L in a Caravan? Yikes, with like 93hp that thing must have taken a half hour to get to 60.
