True to a point, but Cameron isn't the only director with that level, and let's face it the more popular a movie is, the more it'll take at the box office. And since Camerons' other movies - Titanic and Avatar, for eg - broke box office records, can you blame him ?? The point I was making was, in the first film quality was more important than box office results. But it achieved both, and established Ridley Scott as a top quality director.
I wish that damn cat had been killed instead; I hate the damb things. Good-for-nothing, I mean it led Brett to his sticky end and I am afraid that one day my sister's cats might do the same to me, just without some 7 foot alien to drag me off into the rafters, but the point remains the same.
Definitely a science fiction movie well ahead of its time. The soundtrack gives an unsettling feeling throughout the film, which combined with the unique choices of set design, dialogue, and cinematography, creates a constant instinctive feeling of vulnerability and fear of the unknown.
3:11 - 3:30 make you feel like your really float'n in space. One of if not the best soundtracks ever made at a time when movie making was taken really seriously.
The best theme ever known. "In space. Noone can hear you scream" of all the horror movie lines. that one terrifies me the most. Because it is absolutely true.
And the scary part is... there might be an organism like that in space... maybe not exactly like it but maybe as dangerous. "in space. noone can hear you scream"
What happened to the score during the scene in the film when they are trying to take the facehugger off of John Hurt's character and the blood drips through the platform and the team are investigating it? That was one of the creepiest parts of the whole score and its nowhere to be found....anyone know?
@TheGhens It was from another Goldsmith score, not the score for 'Alien'. Much to Goldsmith's chagrin, Ridley Scott and editor Terry Rawlings decided to keep parts of the 'temp score' for the finished product (which featured Goldsmith music from other scores).
The LOTR was a great musical trilogy, but I understand what you are saying. Goldsmith is my favorite composer and was nominated many times, but it seem the academy wanted to favor someone else at times. Alien is brilliant and it isn't even my personal favorite from Goldsmith. It was criminally ignored you could say---but NOT with us fans.
I still say this film was the scariest I've ever seen. Not a lot of blood and the aliend was never fully seen, but that was part of the thrill. The curving halls of the ship and the lighting were incredibly effective. Of course, the chest explosion and the looks on their genuinely shocked faces helped a lot. A masterpiece of filmmaking.
@jemjean Less gore are the best scary movies. It's a psychological thing. Gore movies, I don't have the stomach for them. Movies like this, "The Shinning" and the 1970's "Invasion of The Body Snatchers" are movies that use less gore and more psychological effects. You better not have a bad heart when viewing these movies.
@jemjean I agree. The real creepines of the movie does not lie in the alien itself, but rather in the atmosphere. The claustrophobic Nostromo, the dark and eerie planet, the alien ship with The Pilot. Every scene is precise. And when, at the climax, you find out that the "real" enemy is actualy one of the crew members, you are left barenaked in the darkness of hope. A masterpiece of cimena. Aliens, on the other hand, is slightly overrated.
Awesome ! Combines the terror of the unknown with the mindbendingly incomprehensiveness of the size of deep space. If offered a one-way ticket to space, i'd sure take it lol.
@thundermaxking YA until the Xeno comes out of her belly and goes for ur NECK! lol lol lol or out the pussy to bite ur dick off like alittle dushbag! lol
I love the drifiting flute melodoy that plays throughout the entire score. It emphaises the beauty of space, but masks the evil undertone of the alien.
I won't watch the movie but I will listen to the score.

Alien 2 was always meant to be an action movie, which is why it would never be as good or have the depth of the original !!

I don't know why, but 2:28 always makes me think of Tatooine from Star Wars for some reason...

why does music from lord of the rings get an oscar and this music (which is much better in my opinion) gets none?

OSTs get a lot more respec now than they used to. I really like LOTRs score though.
I like this better, but they're both fucking incredible.
