If I was Obama, I'd have an M60 mounted on the side window, popping off .50 cal rounds at the tourists, screaming "GET SOME!" like in Full Metal Jacket! HAHA!
I do not think it is right that the President of the United States should be transported in a foreign made fleet of helicopters. The President should and ought to be traveling in American made helicopters made by either Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, and Boeing.
actually, the VH71 Kestrel (the new Marine One helicopter) is produced by Lockheed-Martin, so its not actually made by foreigners (who are your allies, by the way).
The design is based on the EH101 Merlin, an Augusta Westland aircraft and one of the most advanced helicopters today, especially compared to the Sea King...
Lockheed-Martin is the primary contractor for the aircraft - essentially a foreign made product. They've been until now, primarily a system integrator, not a helicopter manufacturer. Numerous components of the aircraft continue to be made overseas. Clearly the better aircraft it lost the bidding war due to political pressure. The South Korean recently bought 3 VIP configured S-92s for their president, and orders for the helicopter keep the company on their toes to try to keep up with the demand.
The current Marine One helicopter VH-3Ds and VH-60N Whitehawks operated by HMX-1 Squadron are being replaced by the VH-71 Kestral or EH-101, which is a non U.S. made aircraft... strange, the President should be flown around in aircraft made by his own nation.
I think you mean the 'Merlin'. It is made in the UK but is being engineered by US Navy and Marines at the moment. The current HMX-1 is also British, I think so he's not doing to well.
It is the 'Merlin,' but when in service with the U.S. Marines, the designation will become VH-71 'Kestral.' Just like the Canadians call their SAR Merlin the CH-149 'Cormorant.'
HMX-1 is "Helicopter Marine Squadron 1," the squadron responsible for presidential flight in the U.S. Marines.
Oh. I didn't see part one. I only mentioned that because I didn't see two other choppers follow closely as decoys. Maybe it's not technically Marine One, but we know it still is... ;)
thank you! it was really exciting to watch. you have to stand around awhile and wait for the copters to come (they shut down the road in front of the white house for some time before they show) but if you ever get the chance you should stick around to watch it. It was fun.
Hauling Obamas ass is such a waste of fuel!

Looks like they just finished dropping the President off at the White House instead of picking up.

They did. Part 1 was the landing. So I guess once he's off the copter it's not marine one anymore, but oh well.
