I pulled Moe's tour bus out of the ditch one winter night on NM Hwy.44, in the mid 70's and he gave me cassette tape of his latest and been a fan since. I wonder what he's up to.
Flashbell, I couldn't agree with you more on your comment about so-called country music today. Once in a while one comes along, but rarely. I think that Moe was at about the end of the line.
I hate to tell you this, but country is going to pop rock music and may end up to hip hop. So long to the steel and fiddle, as the record label wants to make more money. Traditional country is long gone.
That is the problems with Texas Music, it is way too much steel and not enough honky tonk country piano. Real country music from Nashville from the past, had a true balance of honky tonk county piano and steel that blended together well. This is one hell of a song to get drunk on! One of my favorites of Moe Bandy, a true honky tonk hero!
Moe didn't write the song. Don Tankersly wrote it with Wayne Carson Thompson as Co Writer. He also wrote Slide off your satin sheets, Johnny Paycheck song and Whiskey Trip for Gary Stewart.
Barstool Mountain was written by Donn Tankersly & Wayne Carson Thompson both from Springfield, Mo. Donn also wrote Whiskey Trip for Gary Stewart and Slide Off Your Satin Sheets by Johnny Paycheck.
Wrong.....Barstool Mountain was not written my Moe Bandy. It was written my friend's late husband Donn Tankersly and co-writer Wayne Carson Thompson, both from Springfield, MO.

I hate Texas Music as it is mostly steel guitar and no honky tonk country piano! Some of the Texas music really does not sound country, more like hill billy crap. Nothing like good ol' Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Moe Bandy. Charlie Rich had great classic honky tonk country piano in his songs, no Texas music artist will have any part of honky tonk country piano, just steel guitar. I am not against steel guitar, but that is mostly what you hear is steel guitar and no honky tonk country piano!
@patsaxon, Texas music is twin fiddles and steel gitar. What are you listening to? Maybe you should stop listening to Chesney and Paisley. Have you ever heard of Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizzell, Floyd Tillman or Gearge Strait?
@flashbell It has never been said better. We should all stop listening to Chesney and Paisley they SUCK SO MUCH. And don't forget Rascal Fags. I have a 10 year old daughter that could kick all their asses. They keep forcing the same shit on us. My local country station in Boston plays about 10 songs a day. We listen in work and by 9:00 AM you're hearing repeats. BAD REPEATS. They should have left the New Opry under water. Ray Price is the best. But may I also add Bob Wills and Waylon and Willie
From what I hear, modern `Country` frowns upon steel and fiddle. It's all MOR pap or pop! I like a nice bit of plonky piano, ala Pig Robbins, but one of the modern day steel pioneers hails from Texas. Reece Anderson is virtually responsible for the universal tuning used by many steel players nowadays.
Next, You'll be telling me Bob Wills is not the king. Reece also played with Bob.
@patsaxon country is fiddles and steel guitar. where the hell you come up with country piano is beyond me. charlie rich was rock a billy and you talk about hillbilly crap. go study some more.
I have been fortunate to have seen Moe twice in Branson. What a terrific performer. He is always so kind after his show to sign autographs & pose for pics. His voice is fantastic! Thanks for the post!
good call but there is some good stuff coming out these days its a pitty the good stuff is few and far between but yeah this is when country was at its best anf finset
I have to agree with the postings of Today's so-called Country Music...IT SUCKS...I don't even listen to Country Music of today. Give me the Old Classic stuff...THAT was Country.
I don't know who wrote it but johnny paycheck cut it first both did a great job on it but I like moe;s job on it a little bit better.I was a firm beleiver that once paycheck sang a song it was sang but moe did a great job on it!!!
I first heard Moe Bandy's 'Barstool Mountain' on an SAS flight from NYC to Oslo, Norway, on March 17, 1980, and I simply could not believe what I was hearing. I just cried and cried, and thought to myself; - who is Moe Bandy and who wrote this uncredible song?
the only music i listen to these days is classic country and i support my texas music, the crap that comes out of nashville aint even worth listening to,hell it aint even good beer driken music
@TulsaCrew They still play classic country music 24/7 here in Chattanooga Tennessee I hear this daily and nightly on FM radio. 97.3 and 99.3FM.. Listen live online its nothing but classic country. Jones, Haggard, Wynette, Strait, Stampley, Bandy, Hart, Jerry lee lewis, but what u will never hear is the NEW bull shit they call country today.
I've never lived in TX, but I was sent there by the US Army twenty some years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I have no real deisre to listen to 'modern' country, so this kind of music has a special place in my soul.
Well we can all thank the likes of Tony Brown, who was with MCA, he and the rest of the cronies at the top of the record labels did this. It is best said in the song Murder on Music Row, by George Strait and Alan Jackson. It is really sad when music executives make up our minds what we want to hear. I don't buy the new crap, I have over 600 country and western albums, yes, I still listen to vinyl, you can't beat it,
So it has taken me a year to find a comment from someone who knows what happened to Nashville! In the 70's a lot of the rockers were losing money and shows. Back then if a country artist had one good song, they had a loyal following for their whole career. (ex. Easy Loving--Freddy Hart never needed another hit, he is still loved.)
Anyhow, there was T Brown, Jerry Brown's buddy-Mike Curb, and more silently--Mark Lindsay.
bigart i agree 1000% with you i have a friend that was in country music back then he feels the same way there is no heart&soul to the music today we need to start a club for real country music lovers iam glad to see some one feels the same way as me i was starting to think it was me
This is cOuntry ,,not the Shit they call country today! Gretchen and Miley and Taylor and the fuckin music mafia sing CUNTRY shit. What in the hell have they done to the real country music? CMT and GAC mite as well join MTV with the garbage they televise!! Moe Bandy is true country!
I really loved this kind of Country Music. Back before it became so popular, and they changed the music to try and make it appeal to teenage girls and soccer moms. Those old drinkin and cheating songs were what Country music was all about
