After watching the replay of the dunk, it is clear that the only reason Chandler even tried to dunk is because if he didn't, McGee would have knocked him down to the ground hard.

Had Chandler settled for the reverse layup - as he often does because he rarely dunks - McGee would have clobbered him.

Chandler ended up dunking in order to be able to hang onto something - the rim - and not fall to the ground.

That being said, Chandler is afraid to dunk. I don't understand why. He's great at it.
