I think Ace was an influence on Ed, because VH used to play several kiss covers in their early days, but I don't see how you can compare the pick tapping that Ace did in his live solo to Ed's Eruption. Totally different. Ace didn't pick tap on record. He did it live to get a reaction from the audience during his dramatic solo spot. Ed played a very interesting piece that was MUCH more musical.
Both fantastic guitarists, Ace however is just so cool when he plays the guitar and his style and attitude do it for me. He can do all the highly technical stuff but the way he takes a couple of notes and milks them for all they are worth inspired me to pick up a guitar. @Atreyufolife Van Halen can play pretty fast, but he doesn't do it all the time. If you listen to the first few records, you'll see that he is a pretty straight ahead rock guitarist. He just had/has lots of interesting techniques that he used occasionally. He doesn't shed or finger tap on most songs. He just uses that stuff to add "spice" to his playing. Check out DOA from Van Halen II. It will rip your face off.

I think Ace is better because he has a more unique quality to his style, like the great Chuck Berry, Angus Young, or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Ace just has fun and gets your fingers a snappin' and toes a tappin'. While Eddie is more up there trying to be speedy gonzales. Ace in my opinion.

I'm a hardcore Van Halen fan and always will be, but, you can't choose from these two. Ace got his massive charm and "hey, im Ace, lets laugh together"-trademark while Eddie is more like a tappingvirtouso.
In my opinion, EVH is a much more advanced guitarist. I'm an Ace fan, but I don't think there's any comparison. To me, Frehley has always sounded like a poor man's Jimmy Page, with a buzzy, mediocre guitar tone. Van Halen, on the other hand, is a fantastic all-around guitarist. His rhythm work is amazing, his lead guitar innovations have influenced young players, more than anyone else, and his ability to write rock and roll tunes with great pop style are unequaled.

I won't go anymore, because I saw them once with Tommy Thayer, and it was a joke. I'm not trashing Ace or Kiss. There first 5 or 6 albums are Rock and Roll classics. When it comes to guitar playing, I feel that Eddie blows Ace away. I feel that Jeff Beck blows every other guitarist away.

BTW when KISS was done with their tour Gene still wanted to sign them, but Van Halen got snatched up by Warner Bros. Records.

@Atreyufolife Van Halen can play pretty fast, but he doesn't do it all the time. If you listen to the first few records, you'll see that he is a pretty straight ahead rock guitarist. He just had/has lots of interesting techniques that he used occasionally. He doesn't shed or finger tap on most songs. He just uses that stuff to add "spice" to his playing. Check out DOA from Van Halen II. It will rip your face off.

I think Ace is better because he has a more unique quality to his style, like the great Chuck Berry, Angus Young, or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Ace just has fun and gets your fingers a snappin' and toes a tappin'. While Eddie is more up there trying to be speedy gonzales. Ace in my opinion.

In my opinion, EVH is a much more advanced guitarist. I'm an Ace fan, but I don't think there's any comparison. To me, Frehley has always sounded like a poor man's Jimmy Page, with a buzzy, mediocre guitar tone. Van Halen, on the other hand, is a fantastic all-around guitarist. His rhythm work is amazing, his lead guitar innovations have influenced young players, more than anyone else, and his ability to write rock and roll tunes with great pop style are unequaled.

@Atreyufolife the only reason KISS got noticed in the first place is because they had to resort to GIMMICKY MAKEUP to get noticed. Their music is average rock in roll at best! Not the worst, but certainly not the best! Van Halen redefined rock in the late 70's and early 80's, and had TONS of copycat bands trying to be just like them, and TONS of guitarists trying to be just like Eddie. And by the way, Eddie/VH is in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, Ace/KISS is NOT! Your just wrong dude!

Kiss has had no records reach the number one position on the US charts. Van Halen has had five number one records. Yes, Kiss has had lots of records go platinum, but several VH records have gone Diamond (10,000,000 units sold). Also, Paganini was tapping before he died in 1840. Ed didn't invent it, but he popularized it. Who's Steve Lynch???

I won't go anymore, because I saw them once with Tommy Thayer, and it was a joke. I'm not trashing Ace or Kiss. There first 5 or 6 albums are Rock and Roll classics. When it comes to guitar playing, I feel that Eddie blows Ace away. I feel that Jeff Beck blows every other guitarist away.

Then showed it to the rest of KISS, and they didn't like Van Halen. Now i love KISS BUT that was very stupid, because they turned down one of the MOST influential bands of all time. BTW when KISS was done with their tour Gene still wanted to sign them, but Van Halen got snatched up by Warner Bros. Records.

err, I have no idea what that one responder is talking about not being able to name one solo from Ace that's memorable, being a fan of both I can give you of one Ace's greatest solo of all time, and everyone knows about, and that' s Detroit Rock City, many people, albeit they play a guitar, or play the air guitar ,loves that solo from Ace's in Detroit Rock City, to me one it's one of my top 10 favorites of all time.

Eddie is so much more technial, Ace was great in his time but after the 80's with Eddie, Rhoads and Malmsteen, Ace is stuck in the 70's with Page.

Anyone who shares your view is just angry and bitter that "one guy changed the electric guitar forever". That was actually a quote from Les Paul about Eddie. Listen to the last part of this clip. That is the tone and technique that divided classic rock guitar and modern rock guitar. The word shredder was invented for Eddie.

@Atreyufolife did you know that when david lee Roth left van halen, Eddie was so bummed about not having a vocalist and a functioning band that he called gene simmons and asked to join Kiss as they were in the middle of tumoil w/ Ace and needed a more dependable player, but gene said he did not think it was a good idea. I can't imagine Eddie in that space suit, can you? it never would have worked, Eddie is a show in and of himself. he doesn't need Kiss and they don't need him..

I prefer Ace, but technically Eddie is better, but Ace and KISS in general get a bad rap for there music cause there remembered for explosions and face paint. It's a joke that some people think Ace is not in the same ballpark as Van Halen. Ace is still a great and creative fucking guitar player and defiantly the most talented member out of KISS. in closing in my opinion a lot of KISS music is underrated.
