I wouldn't go so far as to call Tamaki "gay". I think this anime just has an abundance of "bromance" (which I find quite refreshing actually) ^_^ Certain guys seriously go out of their way to try and prove how tough/masuline they are, the very idea of getting close to another male is just appauling to them. One of the things I like about the guys in this anime is the way they're able to let their guard down around members of both sexes (I think the same thing applies to Haruhi too).
