If Phil doesn't convince himself that he's best, and find an explanation for every hand he loses, he will break down. Any good contender in any competition looks for an explanation to their losses. Phil is just a bit more vocal about it that others, he is actually talking to himself when he's ranting. Lots of people do this.

Semi-agree. You just think he'd realize sooner or later that poker has changed and amateurs aren't always going to play hands the way he thinks/wants them to. Lots of these guys will play a wider range of hole cards than he expects. He wants them to adjust their game to how he sees fit, when that'll never happen.
