  • The best FF game I've played, good storyline, multiple characters, lots of loss and gain hope, it's all about friendship ---- from different parts of the world, waaahhh it's a sad sad world how hard they're fighting for this crazy and doomed world.

  • Whichever the translation, one thing remains certain... Aeris' death is NOTHING compared to Cid's death and Celes' subsequent suicide attempt. I damn near cry every time I see this scene... Aeris' death, while still pretty sad, doesn't even compare to this.

  • The dead dove, they come back in a big way in the ending

  • lol i prepared for battle at the end when i heard the random encounter sound.

  • Aeris' death, while pretty sad in its own right, was NOTHING compared to this. Everything about this scene, from the absolute sadness, horror and despair of Celes believing she was the only person left alive, to her suicide attempt, tot that soul-crushing music... It all makes for one of the saddest scenes in video game history. It's so sad, that after seeing this scene one too many times, I ALWAYS make sure to do everything I can to revive Cid every time I play through this game.

  • @PsychoBurgundy6

I don't think I've ever agreed with a comment as much as I agree with this one, Psycho. For people playing through the first time, this was it. No one knew where the game was going to go from here. It couldn't get any worse. Kefka destroyed the world (something Sephiroth couldn't do ;) ), killed all her friends and then took away the only family she had. it just doesn't get any worse than that.

  • @AbsolutZeroGI1 Definitely agreed with you and PsychoB. The censorship in the SNES version kind of dampened the impact of the scene. It makes much more sense when the original script is restored.

  • This is one of my favorite scenes in the game..

And this is a lot better than saving Cid.. i'm sorry old man

  • Even though i was a small kid i knew she was commiting suicide here. And her crying as she's falling...WOW!! DArkest and most adult of ALL Final Fantasys. I mean Kefka killed Cyan's WHOLE city and made his little boy insane. Now thats....EVIL!

  • @oopopp - Same here. I played this game at age 7, and still got that she was trying to kill herself. The suicide context was pretty clear in the original version. I actually prefer the original version (even though Woolsey's translation has a lot of WTF lines), it has a touch of dark humor to it, which fits with the overall tone of the game.

  • With the woosley version, i didn't even know she tried to commit suicide.

  • wow... as soon as the music came on, a sense of sadness hit me... yea, this scene makes more sense than than Woolsey's version.

  • *birds on the rocks below* Hey you gonna jump? Lemme get a crack at that pussy first. Lemme find out.

  • When I first played this over a decade ago, I didn't make it this far I think .. and by the time I got there, I knew what was really being said and this scene is pretty sad. Although I think the dove was removed ..

    C-A

  • Way better than "took a leap" and "perked em right up!"

  • UR A TERRIBLE GRANDDAUGHTER! D=<

  • I heard the music at 0:12 and I thought it was going to play Zelda Fairy music for a second there o.o

  • There is nothing in the whole Final Fantasy XIII that can top this scene, or Aeris death... and it's not much because these were fantastic games rather than because today's Final Fantasy games suck ass.

  • Are these....tears? o.o

  • Question: what happens in the ending if you don't find Locke?

I always saved Cid, btw. I couldn't bear to see this.

  • T_T @ 1:17 till 1:26

  • And people wonder why I hate the new Final Fantasy games.

  • @rmyoung87 be happy the guy/chick/robot uploaded it

  • Who else liked her a whole lot more after this?

  • "One died quickly, another went mad and killed himself, another died of sorrow, one drowned himself, and the last one jumped of the cliff at the North Cape... perked 'em right up!"

  • @number154

"One downed an entire bottle of sleeping pills... Perked him right up!"

  • Comment removed

  • This scene makes me want to jump off a cliff now, too. : (

  • Woolsey?

  • @Valientlink

Yeah but stopping the vidoo stop the music, and kinda break the feeling...

  • Hey, this is all wrong! Jumping off the cliff was a nice pick-me-up, like drinking a good cup of coffee or taking a quick, cold shower! :P

  • No matter how many times I see this, I cry every time :(

  • DO YOU KNOW THAT THIS WILL BE THE END OF-

    *sees her jump off cliff*

    What.

  • I would so pound Celes's tight snatch.

  • in my opinion this is sadder than aeris' death

  • PROTIP:

    Jump on the rocks.

  • Oh god this breaks my heart every time I see this....or hear it for that matter.....

Wake me up when games are like this again.

  • Shitty translation. Fixes censorship, but it's too literal and awkward.

  • @CCrockyourass I have to agree somewhat. I didn't like magitek being called "Magic Based Armor". everything is just "magic based"

  • Good grief, I didn't realise it was quite this DARK in the Japanese...

I vaguely remember this part of the game but for some reason I don't remember a suicide leap. How did they cover it up?

  • @DGneoseeker1 She still tried to kill herself in both the GBA, SNES, and PSX versions. Just the dialogue was censored... Basically the US dialogue in this scene suggested that the other survivors jumped off the cliffs and it "perked em' right up".

  • @Valientlink I always took that to be facetious.

"Oh yeah, leapin' off that ol' cliff totally fixed all their problems.

Yep. They didn't need to eat or sleep either."

  • The first time I played through this scene, it never even registered in my brain that it was a "leap of faith" to "perk" someone up. I knew damn well that it was suicide, it didn't matter what words were on the screen.

That speaks volumes of how well the scene was set up (I feel sorry for those who used a guide to save Cid, and missed a pivotal point in Cele's character development.)

She lost everyone, and lost all hope; I don't think I've seen ANY character who had so much taken away.

  • NO CELES DON"T DO IT *GASP*

  • I cry everytime

  • I have to be quite honest, when I first played this game (not too long ago, I didn't grow up with it), I actuall thought that this was the ending of the game. I thought it was supposed to be sad with everyone dead, like Shadow of the Colossus. (I thought Kefka died when he got crushed between the statues by Shadow.)

    Really sad scene.

  • This part of the game kinda pisses me off. It gives you a mini-game about keeping Cid alive. If you 'win', you get a very dramatically flat scene with Celes being ushered off to the mainland unceremoniously by Cid, in contradiction of everything he has said to date. If you 'lose', you get this, one of the most powerful and moving scenes in the entirety of Final Fantasy. Basically, the designers were encouraging you to kill the old bastard.

  • Has someone put up a playthrough of this version on youtube? If so, I can't find it =/

  • shit, where are the golden ff times?? all old ff games are awesome: ff4,ff5,ff6,ff7.. ok ff8 and ff9 are great too... ff10..hm okay, its good!... ff12...... hm i dont know... its become worser and worser

  • @Kaworu235 As a gamer who played all 13 final fantasies...FFIV random encounters killed the game for me, FFVI is still one of my favorite game ever..but I really don't understand the hype around Final fantasy VII(and even VIII which I liked)... FFVII characters and story were bland and boring.... I thought XII and XIII were better then them...even if it's a different gameplay and feeling...they were still pretty good games(I know XIII has flaw...equipement upgrade system is horrible..) ...

  • You know what's funny? The "leap of faith... perk you right up!" translation really works. When I played this as a kid, the whole suicide scene just confused the heck out of me! lol.

  • @klutterkicker No it doesn't. Leaps of faith to almost certain death were far more confusing.

I think Woolsey made a point of obfusticating the situation. The Japanese were one arrogant bunch back then, who had no understanding of America. Same crap would have happened to FFVII, too, if not for the Unofficial Squaresoft Homepage petition.

  • @tcaudilllg I think you misunderstood the intention of my comment.

  • @tcaudilllg I was not trying to say that it works as an accurate translation.

  • Where can I find FFIV, V, VI fan translation roms? FFIV: cause of the difficult, FFV: because was never released in US, FFVI: because of the name of the magics ( prefer Firaga than Fire 3... ) and the translation.

  • evrey one knows the line "YOU SPOONY BARD!" but the true line(jp vershon) is "YOU SON OF A BITCH!"

  • @3q89396 I heard the latter from the crazy guy who yelled at his cats, and no,it is not the Tourettes Guy.

  • At the point in this scene where you can control Celes, I decided to go on the world map and see what happened. Well I got into a random battle, got killed, and got sent all the way back to the floating continent. So Celes actually did end up killing herself lol!

  • How did you get killed in a random battle? The enemys are so weak on solitary island they die without hitting them and they dont do anything for damage.

  • After the last fight, Celes was only a few points away from death and I thought I was healed up in the next world. That clearly wasn't the case. One of them hit me, did a few points of damage, and I died. Then it sent me back to the floating continent before the ultima weapon fight.

  • well on this island theres a worm which spam sandstorm or pound i think and..it hurts ;\

  • Oh man... nostalgia. I totally cried the first time I played this. This, Aeris's death, and (oddly enough) saying goodbye to Saria in Zelda: Ocarina of Time are the only scenes in gaming that have made me do that... or come close to it, anyway.

  • @gatotsu911 Wanna cry like crazy because of a game? Watch Illusion of Gaia's ending.

  • mmm... good point. that's definitely a lot more emotional than this scene.

  • what is the name of the sad song, not from this video.. terra's sad song (not celes')

  • The first song is Celes theme and the second is Forever rachel

  • Which is kind of ironic, because Rachel is Locke's ex-girlfriend, and Celes loves Locke. :p

  • Thats like the saddest song in the game and the saddest escene also, I love it.

  • spooky

  • You can save Cid, anyway

  • Yeah, but arguably the story is better if you don't.

  • Lucky for you, Cid gets riencarnated agian in the next game.

  • To paladn95:

    LOL

but anyway the saddest scene in video game history

  • Idk, Areith's death was also very depressing.

  • aeris's death had no weight cause they killed her off way too soon in the story. not to mention the characters in FF7 had no personality and were all 1 dimensional. all i felt for aeris when she was slain was the fact that sephiroth took a life. it had nothing to do with aeris herself as a character.

  • Totally agree.

  • @corvettez06usa

Ah, what blind favoritism. if you can honestly say the characters of ffvii didnt have any personality, you most likely havent played it and only hate it because of the fandom. A game isnt good or bad because alot of people like it, stop it. All ff games have their pros and cons, I would know, since Ive played almost the entire main series.

  • @fruitytuttiluigi I really don't see why you want to start a debate with a comment that is one year old.

    Chao.

  • @Valientlink

Why does it matter how long you posted that? You still have those views do you not?

Of course, anything can happen in a year, so just ignore me if your views have changed.

  • @fruitytuttiluigi I don't see what you are trying to say. The reason I said that to you is because the odds are, the person won't respond rendering your comment useless, unless someone else comes along to either agree or disagree with you. But what you have to understand is that, if this was an Aeris death video, people would get thumbed up for calling FF7 the "best game ever" because the internet just works that way. If you tried to call FF6 better on an FF7 video, it wouldn't work, vice versa.

  • @Valientlink

Oh woops, i swear i thought this was the guy who made that comment, sorry, should have checked the name

Um, so whats your point? Are you saying ff7 is a worse game because theres a large fanbase because of it? Otherwise do you mind helping me understand what you're trying tosay?

  • @fruitytuttiluigi What I'm trying to say is that everyone has an opinion over their favorite FF. FF6 and FF7 are often compared because of Kefka and Sepiroth. I think FF6 and FF7 are both unique in their own way, but FF7 is so popular because it was the first 3D FF that came out. But what I was saying before, is that if you commented on an FF7 video saying it was the best, people would thumb up your comment. If you commented on an FF6 video saying it was the best, you'd get thumbed up there...

  • @Valientlink

Ill be honest, I cant take that opinion argument seriously because of the fact that many ff players are purists, they dont really see a game for what it is and would rather compare it to their favorite ff game.

And oh, I see what you're saying now. Good day then.

  • @fruitytuttiluigi I've played and beaten FF7 probably 6 times since its release. Blind favoritism? Hardly. More like a formulated opinion.

  • @corvettez06usa

No offense but if you honestly think the ff characters have no personalities, then I really doubt you played the game at all. Seriously you have to be a blind idiot to not see the characterization, and I'm not even that much of a fan of ff7.

And you cant exactly pull the cliche card either, considering ff7 was the game that started the cliches =/

  • @fruitytuttiluigi And you accused me of blind favoritism...

  • @corvettez06usa

How exactly am I being a hypocrite? All Im saying is that ff7 doesnt deserve the hate that it gets. Also, I never said that ff7 was the best, just that its not the crappy game haters point it out to be. You cant judge a game by comparing it to other but by playing it as its own game.

I personally like all ff games to an extent so you cant really accuse me of blind favoritism =/.

  • @fruitytuttiluigi Everyone has a different opinion... thus, arguing about which game is better is completely redundant.

Just accept his opinion and accept your own, and move on.

  • @Valientlink

The problem Im having though is he accuses ff7 of having flaws but doesnt back them up. Im all for opinions but there's a difference between a good opinion and a cop out opinion you make to hate on a game because of either a large fanbase or it overshadows some game they like.

I've come over that kind of opinions many times, you cant imagine how much I want to put my hands through my computer screen and choke someone....

  • @fruitytuttiluigi What cliches did FFVII start? One of the protagonists getting their village burned down? FFII and FFIV already did that.

  • @corvettez06usa ya good way to put it. FF7 wasn't as good as people say it was OH MY WE GOT TO GO THERE" WHY" CAUSE SEPHIROTH SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING. No story no romance almost as bad of a story as FF1.

  • @corvettez06usa Indeed. And I always thought Cloud's sudden bout of emoness at her death was unfounded. I mean, I am a romance buff. But they had like, two scenes with each other where they never said anything. There was no foundation to establish the basis for that romance. Cloud just suddenly falls in love right before she dies. Why? What did they share? Nothing.

And lets be honest, Sephiroth is a horrible villian. Want an awesome villain? Try Kefka or better, Luca Blight.

  • @corvettez06usa Idk about that. It made sense since it was said in the game that if a soul seeking the maigc, Holy, reached the planet, then Holy would come to stop the meteor. Aeris died seeking Holy, and that caused the magic to awaken. Also, the characters did have personality (ex. Barret pretty much losing it when he thought his daughter Marlene had died when the Sector 7 plate crashed down). And, Aeris's death DID have weight as it was named one of the most shocking scenes in video games.

  • @JohnnyRockerman

I do agree... I was spoiled about Aerith's death and it made me kinda sad... Celes suicide, of wich I wasnt even spoiled about it, never really got my attention... maybe because there was the option of saving Cid... or because she didnt die at all

  • @BinaryDood Well, I thot Celes "death" was pretty sad. Even thought she didn't die, you don't know that the first time you play it (though I've never played it either). I kinda want to play VI though. Looks like a pretty good game.

  • @JohnnyRockerman

    one of SNES's best

  • @corvettez06usa

I can see that you are simply blinded by unfair comparations... and awfully biased aganist a great game... and everything you just said.. god, so much wrong in that

  • @corvettez06usa While I wouldn't say that the FFVII characters had no personality, I definitely think that most of them could have definitely used some more mandatory screen time. If they had Cloud build up a relationship with Aerith as they were chasing Sephiroth, then it would have been a sadder scene, but since they ignore their relationship after Midgar up until the date scene (which you don't even have to have with Aerith), it didn't have much of an impact on me.

  • Cid must probably the oldest ff character I saw him from IV to VII

  • He's in II, too, and pretty much every single one afterwards.

  • I think your thinking of the same thing between 2 and 4 the american one is 2 the Japanese one is 4 so both of us is right

  • No, Cid was in the actual FFII, the one with Firion and stuff.

  • I remember crying on this point of the game. I coudln't sleep the next night when I played this game. Luckily it was a weekend :D

  • So in the SNES FF3 version, Celes took a jump to regain her hope, but in the original, she tried to commit suicide?

  • not really... She did that becouse of Cid and Locke.

  • It was just the shitty translation. There's no way a game back then could have mentioned someone actually starving themself to death or drowning themselves, so, they had to dress it up so they didn't explicitly mention suicide.

  • They can in Japan.

  • And they can now in the US as I saw it in FF3 DS when (SPOILERS) Alus's father stabbed himself.

  • FF games have become more mature since the dark ages of translation. (Dark due to censorship. Even with some of the errors, there were a lot of great lines, like "YOU SPOONY BARD!")

  • Haha, Edward was so useless. :D

  • @PAMuffinMan

    Years later.....

    The Spoony One was born.

  • @Valientlink

Japan and America are two very different countries. Granted that by today the US has gotten used to gaming enough to where they can tolerate more, but no way would talking about suicide have flown 15 years ago when this game was released.

  • What translation is this? I know it's not the gba version, and it's not the NES version, so what is it?

  • This is the SNES version translated from JAP to ENG. Ask megamanNG for a link if you are interested.

  • To get this scene, feed Cid only bad fish.

To save Cid, feed him the best fish.
