  • This is an illegal jazz. Police has to arrest them.

  • Now that is what I call holding it down!!!

  • Chris Dave is in-vogue now, and everyone seems to say that he's got it going on. For me, the jury is still out. I'm a drummer and I grew up listening and learning from Tony, to Bonham to ?uestlove, to Jojo, to Mark Guiliana, to Cobham, to you name it... But Chris Dave doesn't make any sense to me yet. And I say yet, because I'm trying to let his style and concepts sink in. I think that my #1 problem with him are his tones and his sense of time. But there must be something I'm missing.

  • @mpmrecords hah. man. i can't also feel the way he's playin. for me this is song is one big noise.

  • @mpmrecords this is him at his most extreme. look up some of his work with robert glasper, especially some of their live stuff. i look to these kinds of performances to challenge me, but i look elsewhere to find rhythms i can relate to. there's genuinely a fair amount here that i can't even conceptualize yet, but that's why i'll keep coming back to this video.

  • Noise

  • I'm not doubting skills, I'm not doubting ability, especially the drummer's, but this stuff annoys the fuck out of me, and yes I'm a bass player, I have played with and do play with some badass drummers, and i don't care how much somebody can play games of hide the fuckin '1', or 'what time is this shit?' a good musician in my opinion can make himself understood to the layman-listener, he can make all that stuff sound good to somebody with no concept of time signatures etc.

  • @madbuzz90 you see how hard the bass player is concentrating? Man that dude is sweating this one out!!!

  • am not a bass player but is this to test his skills at keep the groove amongst chaos and irregular beat patterns? real question

  • @FLpolo I'm bass player and our drummer in the band does that to me all the time, he loves that... kinda yea and soetimes it's hard as fuck if he's in a good mood

  • what is sad is that almost everyone is so negative about this drummer. If you can hear this cat is killin' it then don't listen. Can you play better than he? Everybody thinks they are a critic. Usually the ones that speak like this can't play, so they do the only thing they can do is dog someone else and make themselves a critic. If you don't dig it turn the channel. peace.

  • This song is called "attempt to get the bass player to play out of time" hahah

  • Great stick technique, but, oddly, no beat- no soul. Cobham could do both. This guy's young- maybe in time...

  • @uncasist Ever hear of Adele's album "21"? Well, it won multiple Grammy awards yesterday and I think it is fair to say that the drumming contained on the album is pretty groovy/soulful. This guy played the drums on that album.

  • @andSometimesY I haven't heard it. Good for it winning grammies. I think it's great that this talented person can play a beat with life. That is a good thing. I'm a bit spoiled for really good drummers.

  • @uncasist I know what you mean. Check out Dave DiCenso if you like soulful players. He is really under-appreciated. The guy has amazing chops and an amazing ability to play with passion. Right now he teaches at Berklee.

  • @uncasist ????? maybe you're an old dog but you can still learn some new tricks.

  • @pootershnitzel !!!!! Newer doesn't always mean better- i'm still learning that. Trix are for kidz- already learned that one. If you'd like to learn, check out Cobham, DeJohnette, Smitty-Smith and Tony Williams @1970-1990. Woof, woof, I can shit and sake hands.

  • The bass player is a heroe!!

  • 7:24!!!

  • The bass was giggling with Foley at 7:08

  • Playing drum but not doing the beat rhythm routine. A very brave & innovative approach.

  • en voilà une belle jam session,, trop fort

  • Where's my pocket at....? Oh, Foley kept it.

  • Make an album alreadyyyyyyyyy

  • music is math... this is a clear representation of that... very complicated but simple and it will never lie to you...

  • Foley and Chris Dave have played together for a long time- over 10 years- so they have an intuitive feel for each other's groove! Foley is also a good drummer (played drums with George Clinton and P Funk around the time of this show), so he has an even better understanding of what Chris is doing, and of how to play 'straight' while Chris plays all that nice chaotic grooviness around him!!

  • what the fuck.

  • My ears bled after listening to this...

  • Foley must be some sort of demigod....

  • Get in the pocket and stay there.

  • i bet chris and the sax guy try out bassists and see if they can stand up to this test hahaha

  • @drumma771 Actually Foley is a mainstay of the trio, and the sax-player was just filling in for their usual saxophonist.

  • ...speechless!

    that's what I am!

  • 3:03 you're a bad man, Chris Dave

  • It's like they are playing in a different language. If you want to understand what they are playing.. learn the language!

  • fucking foley

  • Chris Dave is da bomb!

  • i could be wrong, but is zhenya playing with his mouthpiece upside down?

  • anybody noticed 7:26 ????

  • Wow! Chris' chops are friggin radioactive!! No wonder the bassist looks a bit sick, thats what happens when you get too close to nuclear energy.

I guess that protective jacket they got him isn't working...

  • Chris Daddy Dave is the best drummer alive.

  • Grosss licks (In a good way)

  • how to shot down a poor tiny bassist

  • i just realised! this bass line is from how we get along - jurassic 5

  • @Bentoss612 It's actually James Brown's "Licking Stick" which I'm sure Jurassic 5 just sampled it.. Classic line..

  • Freaking love monk!

  • @kyledrummer92 lol i dont even thinks this counts as monks criss cross anymore

  • @Smilinggoose No, the bass groove is James Brown's "Licking Stick", from 1968!!

  • It's interesting to notice the real "trying to mess Foley up" stuff doesn't happen so much in Chris Dave's playing or the head, but the part at 1:44 (and others like it) where CD gives Foley the illusion of comfortability, before quickly snatching it away and trying to break him down again.

  • his drums sounds sik and the style is dope'

  • wooow

  • Hmm those guys' music seem really nice and smooth, but I don't understand why this is SO legendary? Maybe I'll get hated with this comment but I am a bassist myself and this guy is only playing the same riff over and over again in different rhythms with an awful sound (maybe its the camera but this tone is like he has dead strings) and becomes boring ...

Drumming is cool tho, complex and stuff, but saxophone is fuckin gay ...Well I don't know this bassist well, so excuse me for this :)

  • @dimlebrules I'm a bass player too and I could imagine trying to play that same riff over and over again with that crazy drumming and sax playing would be pretty hard. This is pretty different music though, I think it would take a bit of getting used to. I can see where you are coming from.

  • @bunkabusta01 Thnx for the replay, first of all! I watched some other clips of this band and now I know that at least this bassist is decent ..Not my style, however. And you got a point there :)

  • @dimlebrules You shouldn't have to look at any other video's to be able to classify foley as 'decent'. Good bass playing is good bass playing, and that is tight as anything I've ever seen.

  • @dimlebrules Yea. Basically you don't know how to listen to this yet. It's cool.

  • @funnyguy1321 @dimlebrules wrong... there is no right way to listen to music. I know what they're playing, and I still don't like it. Facility and skill both groove wise and rhythmically can be misused. This is a prime example. You may love it, and that's fine, but this is tasteless in my opinion. First , it rushes and ends up being at a different tempo towards the end. I can appreciate Chris' technique/talent but those two things do not equal tasteYou'll never hear Jordan or Gadd like this

  • @Jazman1942 Whatever man. Yes it is slightly faster at the end. But who gives a shit? Are you assuming that Chris dave or Foley are fucking metronomes? Who cares? You don't like it? That is fine with me. I find it very interesting and out of my comfort zone of musical styles. I am a more Metal/Progressive Metal/Fusion kind of guy.

  • @Jazman1942

Well that's because dave isn't jordan or gadd :)

  • @Jazman1942 You'll never hear jordan or gadd like this because or their character, style, taste etc etc.... chris dave can play whatever he wants... same goes as jordan and gadd... the good thing is dave is beyond everything and he is makin it right.... and still i consider gadd and jordan still have their own thang.. this is dave's thang.... not gadd or jordan's thang... so why should gadd and jordan be like this if they have their own thang? damn...

  • The hoodie is magic.

  • Legends at work! Chris Dave is something else, holy feel. And could you imagine laying down a groove with Foley? Fuck, I'd be so happy just to sit and play it for hours with him.

  • @PurcellTV I was just thinkin' that-what I would give to play over the top of these dudes' groove for a while...funny-that dude on alto looks like a baby doe in the headlights sometimes too!LOL!

    I guess that's the adventure though-eh???

  • @Guitfiddlejase Definitely adventurous! Strigalev does a great job playing his intended role as well.

  • @PurcellTV Indeed he does.I talked to another individual on another clip from this set and he told me that Strigalev was indeed filling in...can you imagine that???

  • @Guitfiddlejase Proof of a great musician!

  • @PurcellTV Indeed Sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A fabulous musician! I wish there were guys like these in my area-I would love to play with people like this!

    What do you play?

  • @Guitfiddlejase I play drums, starting at Humber College in Toronto this fall. Guys like Chris Dave are very inspiring to me and a fresh breath of air among the many drummers out there. Thanks for asking! Yourself?

  • anyone know what kind of metric modulation he goes into for the melody?

  • @dgjhmk Hey dgjhmk! I don't think it's a metric modulation per say but a shift in tempo.

  • this is the nastiest

  • @GuitarheroMatteo Seriously!? I'll agree Foley is tight, but Chris Dave is badass! And it's his trio so how could Foley fire him? WOW.

  • @GuitarheroMatteo Yes, that is why the drummer (Chris Dave) is playing the melody in unison with the sax player. Because he doesn't know the song. Right.

  • @GuitarheroMatteo :epicfacepalm:

  • @Nasute; Foley used to play with Miles!!

  • Comment removed

  • I'll admit. I never heard of Foley, but I am a new fan. This guy is ridiculous in this clip and the other ones.

  • Неплохо сыграно

  • ACOJONANTE!

  • when he was student he surely had to practice in a student's camp with millions of others practising as well ;-)

  • Monk would be proud

  • Fucking awesome.

  • I take it this song is actually called "Let's try to fuck up the bassist"

  • @Indextic I just saw him play with pino palladino on bass in Moers and me being a bass player i then and again thought the same. " okay i would go out of groove here.. and here and there.." man oh man :D

  • Like if this bass groove is burned into your head.

  • This is one of the sickest ideas I've seen/heard in a long time! Kudos!

  • they miss the time near 0:50 :D

  • @Poulet39 So what? you seem to be the only one who cares about that. what's more, - they do not miss the time "near 0:50", they keep it tight.

  • @Poulet39 WHAT time?

  • 7:24 omg

  • That's how it should be... the bassist grooves ten times harder than the drummer.

Then the drummer's got room for movement.

    Maybe not this much movement!

    Amazing chops though.

  • Woah! From about 6:40 to about is incredible. That hi-hats perfect and what he's doing is just amazing and creative. Great player

  • How is any of this possible?

  • JB's Licking Stick :)

  • This is why bassists don't listen to drummers.

  • Holy hell. o_O Bass? Much respect man , much respect.

  • This is the single most insane thing I have seen today. Bravo!

  • Charles Ives + T. Monk + Schizophrenic Machine Gun + Foley the Babysitter! Yeah!!

  • Houston's Own Jazz Great...on drums....Mr Chris Dave.....Chris "Daddy" Dave

  • Q cagada es toda esta mierda ? Q aprendieron d tantos años de soul y groove ?

  • Q cagada esta toca el baterista ?

  • Q cagada esta toca el baterista ?

  • JESUS

  • has anyone realized yet this is the true meaning of "Criss Cross"?

  • I watched this Video 70.000 times - who are the other 224 people? ;-)

  • Bass line-James Brown- Lickin' Stick

  • NUTZ......Foley is Sik wit it on DRUMS too...Chris DAve He inspires me..

  • this shit is so sick its not even funny!!! foley and dave, jesus!

  • chris dave reminds me of dennis chambers....how he will play this super quiet groove then bust into face melting patterns then go back to a groove seamlessly

  • no words...

  • Too complex for my mind. Haha. AMA

  • omg the bass!

  • THIS IS BRILLIANT GENIUS.

  • i could watch him all day

  • holygroove2 - No, I get Chris. His groove is undeniable as I've seen the stuff he's done w/ Mint Condition, Meshell N'dcello etc. and, yes, I understand most of what he's doing here as I'm familiar with polyrhythms and metric modulation. I was just putting in my 2 cents in regards to musical taste here as it seems as though this piece is more about math and less about music.

  • @groovemerchant19 Agreed this was more of a show off or a humor piece and the rest of the concert was somethin else

  • btw the horn player.could of not played at all..

  • Damn that bass player is SOLID. Like a ROCK, baby.

  • That bass tone is unbelievably incredible....ugh!

  • @drbisquit best electric bass tone i've heard. ever. lol

  • straight musical masturbation....

  • @rrradcliff Musical masturbation is when there's no RHYTHM!

  • @ivanbamford ..I agree....and i understand why you said that ...however i dont think you understood why i said what i said and that saddens me..you made a comment about something that you didn't care to inquire i am quite familiar personally wit the bass player attended high school wit him,,i dig this..and i understand music..

  • @rrradcliff Didn't mean to make you sad!:) Wow high school with Foley! Enough said! I like the sax player though. Maybe she's not in her element but she holds her own with these absolute BADASS MOTHERF&*KERS!

  • Comment removed

  • I dont get it But I LOVE IT !!

  • amazing! foley is solid as rock!

  • O.k. there's no denying this cat has changed the face of drumming as we know it. His facility on the instrument is truly phenomenal. But besides being a show of mathematical gymnastics, does this feel good to you ? Left me wanting some harmonic motion, mood changes and groove. Sigh.

My hat's off to the bass player for being able to lock his pulse down amidst all the chaos.

  • @groovemerchant19 Yeah, thats true, It is very impressive, but you wouldnt be able to go to a whole 2 hour gig and really enjoy it!

  • @sonicx666

    I sure could. :D

  • @qphox

    So could I :P

  • @groovemerchant19 - You have to hear Chris in different contexts to appreciate the fact that he IS a drummer, and can hold a groove. He does that on this video, but seeing as how it's his group, wouldn't you expect him to show his chops?

Goto his facebook page and check the tune he does with Bilal. His time and feel are great. There are TONS of mood changes here, but they're abrupt. He's an innovator, and they are not always understood.

  • Amazing!

  • There should be a statue erected just for Foley for keeping this groove so tight. HOLY SHIT

  • @TheDrFunkenstein My statue erected when foley kept the groove this tight.

  • @TheDrFunkenstein here here!

  • @TheDrFunkenstein SOOOOOO TIGHT!

  • Livelli moooooooto elevati ragazzi!!! ragazzacci!!!!!

  • F * C K N ' S O M E (i think every time i see this again, 898times a week)

  • without doubt one of the most incredible drummers alive. Outstanding.

  • Fucking machine!

  • Chris Dave is a genius - no two ways about it

  • it's heard like shit! but honestly it's the best composition i've heard!

    \m/_

  • i like the drumming and time signature

  • I feel sorry for the bass player.

  • @kkjhhkjhkj woooord omg that was o.d.

  • @kkjhhkjhkj i think you dont have to feel sorry for a bass player like foley... why should you? ^^

  • ok i'm pretty drunk right now and i dig this MORE if not as much as ever than when I was sober. Chris Dave knows how to be the hippest perfect robot ever.

  • Can someone get me a DVD of this?

  • this should be called "the bass player's workout".

  • thats how u stay in the pocket baby

  • @deseandy that literally HAS to be a joke!

  • @deseandy ...It HAS to be....

  • That bassline.....hypnotic.
