Chris Dave is in-vogue now, and everyone seems to say that he's got it going on. For me, the jury is still out. I'm a drummer and I grew up listening and learning from Tony, to Bonham to ?uestlove, to Jojo, to Mark Guiliana, to Cobham, to you name it... But Chris Dave doesn't make any sense to me yet. And I say yet, because I'm trying to let his style and concepts sink in. I think that my #1 problem with him are his tones and his sense of time. But there must be something I'm missing.
@mpmrecords this is him at his most extreme. look up some of his work with robert glasper, especially some of their live stuff. i look to these kinds of performances to challenge me, but i look elsewhere to find rhythms i can relate to. there's genuinely a fair amount here that i can't even conceptualize yet, but that's why i'll keep coming back to this video.
I'm not doubting skills, I'm not doubting ability, especially the drummer's, but this stuff annoys the fuck out of me, and yes I'm a bass player, I have played with and do play with some badass drummers, and i don't care how much somebody can play games of hide the fuckin '1', or 'what time is this shit?' a good musician in my opinion can make himself understood to the layman-listener, he can make all that stuff sound good to somebody with no concept of time signatures etc.
@FLpolo I'm bass player and our drummer in the band does that to me all the time, he loves that... kinda yea and soetimes it's hard as fuck if he's in a good mood
what is sad is that almost everyone is so negative about this drummer. If you can hear this cat is killin' it then don't listen. Can you play better than he? Everybody thinks they are a critic. Usually the ones that speak like this can't play, so they do the only thing they can do is dog someone else and make themselves a critic. If you don't dig it turn the channel. peace.
@uncasist Ever hear of Adele's album "21"? Well, it won multiple Grammy awards yesterday and I think it is fair to say that the drumming contained on the album is pretty groovy/soulful. This guy played the drums on that album.
@andSometimesY I haven't heard it. Good for it winning grammies. I think it's great that this talented person can play a beat with life. That is a good thing. I'm a bit spoiled for really good drummers.
@uncasist I know what you mean. Check out Dave DiCenso if you like soulful players. He is really under-appreciated. The guy has amazing chops and an amazing ability to play with passion. Right now he teaches at Berklee.
@pootershnitzel !!!!! Newer doesn't always mean better- i'm still learning that. Trix are for kidz- already learned that one. If you'd like to learn, check out Cobham, DeJohnette, Smitty-Smith and Tony Williams @1970-1990. Woof, woof, I can shit and sake hands.
Foley and Chris Dave have played together for a long time- over 10 years- so they have an intuitive feel for each other's groove! Foley is also a good drummer (played drums with George Clinton and P Funk around the time of this show), so he has an even better understanding of what Chris is doing, and of how to play 'straight' while Chris plays all that nice chaotic grooviness around him!!
It's interesting to notice the real "trying to mess Foley up" stuff doesn't happen so much in Chris Dave's playing or the head, but the part at 1:44 (and others like it) where CD gives Foley the illusion of comfortability, before quickly snatching it away and trying to break him down again.
Hmm those guys' music seem really nice and smooth, but I don't understand why this is SO legendary? Maybe I'll get hated with this comment but I am a bassist myself and this guy is only playing the same riff over and over again in different rhythms with an awful sound (maybe its the camera but this tone is like he has dead strings) and becomes boring ...
Drumming is cool tho, complex and stuff, but saxophone is fuckin gay ...Well I don't know this bassist well, so excuse me for this :)
@dimlebrules I'm a bass player too and I could imagine trying to play that same riff over and over again with that crazy drumming and sax playing would be pretty hard. This is pretty different music though, I think it would take a bit of getting used to. I can see where you are coming from.
@bunkabusta01 Thnx for the replay, first of all! I watched some other clips of this band and now I know that at least this bassist is decent ..Not my style, however. And you got a point there :)
@dimlebrules You shouldn't have to look at any other video's to be able to classify foley as 'decent'. Good bass playing is good bass playing, and that is tight as anything I've ever seen.
@funnyguy1321@dimlebrules wrong... there is no right way to listen to music. I know what they're playing, and I still don't like it. Facility and skill both groove wise and rhythmically can be misused. This is a prime example. You may love it, and that's fine, but this is tasteless in my opinion. @Jazman1942 Whatever man. Yes it is slightly faster at the end. But who gives a shit? Are you assuming that Chris dave or Foley are fucking metronomes? Who cares? You don't like it? That is fine with me. I find it very interesting and out of my comfort zone of musical styles. I am a more Metal/Progressive Metal/Fusion kind of guy.
@Jazman1942 You'll never hear jordan or gadd like this because or their character, style, taste etc etc.... chris dave can play whatever he wants... same goes as jordan and gadd... the good thing is dave is beyond everything and he is makin it right.... and still i consider gadd and jordan still have their own thang.. this is dave's thang.... not gadd or jordan's thang... so why should gadd and jordan be like this if they have their own thang? damn...

O.k. there's no denying this cat has changed the face of drumming as we know it. His facility on the instrument is truly phenomenal. But besides being a show of mathematical gymnastics, does this feel good to you ? Left me wanting some harmonic motion, mood changes and groove. Sigh.
My hat's off to the bass player for being able to lock his pulse down amidst all the chaos.
@groovemerchant19 - You have to hear Chris in different contexts to appreciate the fact that he IS a drummer, and can hold a groove. He does that on this video, but seeing as how it's his group, wouldn't you expect him to show his chops?
Goto his facebook page and check the tune he does with Bilal. His time and feel are great. There are TONS of mood changes here, but they're abrupt. He's an innovator, and they are not always understood.
ok i'm pretty drunk right now and i dig this MORE if not as much as ever than when I was sober. Chris Dave knows how to be the hippest perfect robot ever.
alright so here's what i think 0.55-1.11 are quintuplets grouped in 3's & 2's; 1.35-1.43 are septuplets grouped in 5's; 2.05-2.30 the time implied is based off 5:2 polyrhythm, so the 5:2 is the new tempo with swung time; 3.03-3.19 are septuplets; 3.25-3.49 the time is based from 5:2 polyrhythm; 3.49-4.04 is a groove based on 7:4 polyrhythm, the 7:4 is grouped in 8; 4.04-4.11 is a grooved based on 9:5 polyrhythm! which is grouped 8; 4.25-6.25 is time based on 5:2; 7.33-8.01 is again based on 5:2
This is an illegal jazz. Police has to arrest them.

O.k. there's no denying this cat has changed the face of drumming as we know it.

He's an innovator, and they are not always understood.

alright so here's what i think 0.55-1.11 are quintuplets grouped in 3's & 2's; 1.35-1.43 are septuplets grouped in 5's; 2.05-2.30 the time implied is based off 5:2 polyrhythm, so the 5:2 is the new tempo with swung time; 3.03-3.19 are septuplets; 3.25-3.49 the time is based from 5:2 polyrhythm; 3.49-4.04 is a groove based on 7:4 polyrhythm, the 7:4 is grouped in 8; 4.04-4.11 is a grooved based on 9:5 polyrhythm! which is grouped 8; 4.25-6.25 is time based on 5:2; 7.33-8.01 is again based on 5:2
